OS X :: What Is The Benefit Of Running My Mac In 64 Bit Kernel
Oct 2, 2010I held down the 6 and 4 keys and booted up into 64 bit kernel on my mac pro 3.1 fine.
I checked and all my extensions are 64 bit, but not all software is.
So far, all of my stuff works fine- the printer, scanner, trackpad, revolution mx mouse and web cam, as do all of the programs that I have tried to use.
What is the benefit of running my mac in 64 bit kernel?
Can I set something so that it will automatically boot up in 64 bit every time?

Sep 4, 2009i've got mine set to 64 bit kernel default, but i don't want my computer to wear out or anything. my last iMac's capacitors blew, and i'd hate to have something like that happen any more quickly. will keeping it in 64 bit wear my computer out?

Oct 5, 2009my late 2006 macbook running 10.4.11 has been acting very strange since yesterday. first, it freezes while i'm recording something off of isight and i have to restart. works fine for 30 minutes until it randomly restarts (probably due to heat) and takes me two reboots and some time to fix it (i have to put an ice pack to keep it cool). then later in the night, it randomly restarts again and takes two reboots to get it back. then in the past hour, the screen has frozen, it went into a kernel panic and it randomly restarted again while i was trying to post this the first time. and also, it's been running very hot despite having no applications running.

You can force 64-bit kernel but some of your hardware will not be working.
So all that marketing crap about the benefits of 64-bit etc are all B.S.
I don't want a million threads about how this will not effect the running of 64 bit apps, etc. because it will. Your 64-bit app will run but it will not be able to address more than 4Gb of RAM.
There are also many more advantages to having a 64-bit kernel.

Nov 15, 2009I have a Macbook running Leopard and an iMac running Tiger. I am looking to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard and Tiger to Leopard. If I were to purchase Snow Leopard and install it on the Macbook, would I then be able to use the copy of Leopard that came with the Macbook on the iMac? I am not trying to use 2 copies of the same thing on different machines, I just want to put a new os on one machine and move the existing one to another.I am reluctant to purchase the Mac Box Set version of Snow Leopard for the iMac because I do not want or need iLife and iWork.

Mar 5, 2012I've had an iMac for just about a year and over time I guess I just didn't notice but the machine always ran very quietly. At the same time the back of the computer would heat up so bad that it would nearly burn my hand if I left it there. Well last week I decided to upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard and when I did the install failed and froze up the hard drive. I took the computer in to the apple store and they determined that it had to have a new hard drive installed because the old one (only a year old) had a physical malfunction (was broke). So anyway I have my iMac back and get it started up, backed up from time machine, and then finally get Lion istalled - and now all of the sudden I notice that the fans in the computer are CONSTANTLY blowing - I can hear them spinning and can hear the air venting out of the back of the computer - and the computer is STILL really hot on the backside of the screen.
So now I am wondering if the originial problem was the computer heating up and if that may have broken the otherwise good hard drive? Also now that I have a new hard drive - should I be concerned about the fans being on ALL the time? I mean they never go off. Even when I leave the computer for hours and come back to it and the screen is asleep the fans are STILL buzzing away at top speed. Here is the stats on the computer at the time that I'm typing this note - there are no other programs running than Firefox and Mail. Also - I don't know what the optical drive is exaclty - but if it's the DVD drive (superdrive) - there is nothing in the DVD disc drive

Mar 21, 2012my 4 year old IMac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb running 10.7.3 has been running really slow since I installed photoshop CS4 and upgraded to lion ( I have 137gb of free space on hard drive) I mean it wont quit out of photoshop I always have to do a force quit and most applications run really slow. Do I need a new computer , what should I go for to have a smooth running mac?Was thinking of a new IMac 27-inch: 2.7GHz with 4gb memory.

MacBook Pro :: Running Extremely Slowly And Fan Continuously Running Loudly?
Jun 4, 2014My Macbook Pro (from mid-2010) has recently started running EXTREMELY slowly, and the fan continuously runs loudly. From other posts, I have checked my activity monitor to see if any process is taking up a lot of the CPU % and have found that nothing seems high, except the kernel_task which, from what I understand, is supposed to be high. I have also attempted to reset the SMC which didn't fix the problem either. I have taken my computer to the genius bar 3 times now, and they keep telling me nothing is wrong (because it works perfectly there), but when I get it home the fan comes back on, and everything runs slowly.

Mar 15, 2012My Mac feels as if it is running slower these last couple of months. I have thought of pursuing a commercially available "clean up" product, but thought I would try the community first and also for pointers using the Mac's own internal diagnostics or system improvement capabilities. Any and all advice is most welcome. I have a 250GB hard drive that is half full, I always update to latest revisions and have an extra high-speed internet connection. Computer is not heavily loaded with apps and typically using Firefox for browsing. (MS Office for Mac as well, but usually limited to one program such as MS Word or Excel at a time.) No heavy graphics utilization. Videos from the internet load slowly and some are choppy. Even scrolling just doesn't seem "brisk".

Jan 6, 2011Since I updated to 10.6.6 earlier today I've noticed that the fan in my MBA (13" late-2010 model) is running constantly. This is rare -- I hardly ever hear it. I opened activity monitor and 'System' is using 45% CPU time, and it's pretty constant.
I have absolutely no clue why -- there's nothing in console to suggest it's doing some task, and I can't see any other hints. Apart from the noise and the heat (though don't get me wrong -- compared to my old MBP it's not really noisy or hot, but I liked it better when it was totally quiet and cold), it's also killing the battery -- 25% has gone in less than an hour.
OS X :: Pro Models Can Only Use 64-bit Kernel?
Jun 16, 2009Snow Leopard 10A380 will not load the 64-bit kernel on my late 2007 aluminum iMac with 4gb of RAM. I held down the "6" and 4" during boot and it still boots the 32-bit kernel.
My Mac Pro at work does boot the 64-bit kernel but not by default.
I am concerned that Apple isn't going to allow iMac's and MacBooks the ability to load the 64-bit kernel and drivers to differentiate the consumer and pro models.

I have an Early 2008 MBP (penryn, model MBP 4.1) which I think is capable of rebooting in 64 bit kernel mode. I have 4 Gb RAM memory and a 2.4 GHz C2D processor.
WOULD I SEE ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL IN MY COMPUTER BETWEEN 32-BIT AND 64-BIT KERNEL?

Jun 4, 2010I am using a MacBook Pro 2010 (i7, OS 10.6.3). I sometime use Fusion 3.1 to access to Windows Vista 64-bit partition under BootCamp. I read that Snow Leopard is defaulted to 32-bit. 64-bit can be enabled by pressing 6 and 4 during startup. Is it safe to try out the 64-bit kernel? I worry that if there is a compatibility issue such as problems with drivers or softwares, my system may get messed up even when the system returns to 32-bit kernel next time it boots. Also, is it safe to use Time Machine to back up the system during the trial period? So far, TM has been backing up my laptop running 32-bit. I wonder if switching the 32-64 bit kernel back and forth will mess up the TM backups.

Nov 7, 2010I'm getting a kernel panic at start up and the optical drive wont read the start up DVD. I can boot up windows via bootcamp and the machine runs fine. I'm not getting any red LED's on my risers, so i'm assuming its not a RAM issue. I have a Mac Pro 8-core (2008) stock, just added 10 gigs of RAM.

Jan 9, 2011I have had the Macbook air 11.6 for five weeks now and it has been rock solid except for a couple of kernel panics. Once when I first got it I got a kernel panic in Safari. I only use google browser now. I got a kernel panic two days ago. I went to open the lid and it did not come on. I found out there was a kernel panic. I am afraid if I take it to the genius bar they will have me reinstall the OS and add one app back at a time to see what is causing it but since they are so infrequent this is obviously not convenient. Also I have had my IMac 24 for three years and have tons more junk on it and have never got one panic.

Mar 18, 2009I recently got a Dell 2209WA with built in USB hub. and great i thought, i can manage the USB ports on my macbook a bit more effectively. But it seems when i pull the USB cable when i want to go portable, it gets a KP, at the moment i suspect it has something to do with the logitech wireless adaptor i have plugged into the monitor. it exhibits these issues when the monitor is turned off as well.
I have another USB hub, but i pretty much use it exclusively for my external hard drives (i don't really like to keep it plugged in all the time, if powered up for some reason the drives spin up in the middle of the night even when the macbook is sleeping) and it does nothing like this when the adaptor is plugged into that.
Mac Pro :: Two Kernel Panic On New Machine
Apr 11, 2009I've had two of these in less than 24 hours on this new machine. I was able to work in Photoshop and Aperture fine, but the minute I started watching Hulu videos I started getting these. Oddly enough. I zapped PRAM and repaired permissions, and haven't had another one yet... but should I just take it back now while I'm still in my 14 days?

OS X :: 10.5 - Cannot Restart After Kernel Panic
May 3, 2009Happy for my macbook pro for almost two years. Lately it's been unstable and freezes sometimes. Two days ago it went to kernal panic and shows kernal panic screen and asks for restart everytime it restarts. It won't start on DVD or safe mode (it just hangs there and keeps spinning). For single user mode, it first worked and I was able to remove login items, but it froze again and now generates the following panic log. All the hardware have been the same and I have installed vpn a few months ago and dropbox last week.
