MacBook :: How To Remove Partially Downloaded Files In 10.6

Mar 9, 2012

I could not find any recent helpful answers via Google, but eventually discovered, by trial and error, that you need to delete the failed downloads in three places namely:  /Library/Updates (this is probably unnecessary)

and the *two* files here:- /private/var/folders/<complicated long path>/<name> where <name> ends in .pkg and also in .pkg.resumeData (i.e. the "same name" twice)

I found out where these were being saved by (*immediately* after the update-failure), typing find /private/var/folders -newerct "1 minute ago" -name "*.resumeData" and sure enough, these corresponded to the failed downloads. I removed them with sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk.resumeData

and then the software update started working again instead of always aborting with e.g. "iTunes: partially downloaded" etc. The reason for the original failure is my poor internet service that constantly breaks halfway through any long-ish downloads.

An example of the actual filepath on my 10.6.8 Mac OSX is:

/private/var/folders/02/027LjtRMGXSZNggzpqLQg++++TI/-Caches-/com.apple.SoftwareU pdate/swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/<same amount again in length>

in other words, really long winded and very difficult to find (I have been trying to do this all day and could not find anything via the www) - I hope it helps you!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Software :: Downloaded File Disappears / Unable To Find Downloaded Files

Apr 28, 2010

About a month ago, a friend who had just purchased his first Mac emailed me and asked why his Dock DownLoad file disappeared. I had no idea why. He still hasn't been able to reestablish it.

Yesterday, I downloaded something and my Dock DownLoad file vanished. I have tried rebooting, using (useless) Help, Spotlight, Search, and several other things. NO JOY. NO DownLoad file.

1. Does anyone know where to find DownLoad or how to bring it back?

I have experienced several idiosyncrasies with Snow Leopard, but when I call Apple support, they are very nice, but haven't a clue as to why it's happening.

2. Another problem is that the Highlight gets anchored on something in Mail, Word, and some other Apps. When I click somewhere else, the whole area between the "anchor" and what I click on is lit up. Apple doesn't know what causes it. I have to go through multiple machinations to shake it loose. I don't know what it is that causes it or specifically how to "shake it loose". Neither does Apple.

3. When typing in Word or an editor, there are times when the type changes to UpperCase and won;t let go.

Another problem is that, at times, when I click on a file, it fills the screen. Apple is aware of this problem and is trying to find an answer. Nothing, to date.

Apple support can't tell me why the MacMail Inbox spinner disappeared or how to get it back.

There are times when I can't access the hidden Dock. After rebooting and trying other things, the Dock finally shows up but any additions that I have put on the Dock are no longer there.

When I put a DVD in the slot, for the first few seconds, it grinds but does smooth out.

I thought that SL was supposed to get rid of the "foibles". "What happened on the way to the Forum"?

Is anyone finding other SL idiosyncrasies? What are they?

If anyone can help with items 1., 2, and/or 3. I'd be grateful.

BTW, Apple says that items 2 and 3 MAY be caused by the wireless Magic Mouse and/or the wireless keyboard; however, when I use alternates, it still happens.

OS X :: Remove Unwanted Connected Guest / Remove From System With Disable Sharing

Jun 9, 2008

I've just noticed that in my Finder window sidebar, under "Shared", I have a character called Thomson listed. I don't know any Thomson and I bought the machine, an MBA, brand new. However, I did have an engineer instal the machine in my apartment and can only assume he's the mysterious Thomson. Anyway, whoever he/she is, I don't want him/her on my machine as Shared & "connected as guest". The point is, I cannot find a way to delete Thomson!! Can anyone help? I've tried System Preferences>Security and Accounts and there's no trace of Thomson there. Right clicking on Thomson in the sidebar of Finder only gives me the option to Open and Get Info. Most annoying, this. There MUST be a way to delete a Sharing but totally unwanted guest....

Mac Pro :: How To Uninstall Any Program

Apr 27, 2008

After 20+ years of Windows, I finally got my 1st Mac Pro 2 days back. Everything went smoothly including installing 4x750 Samsung Spinpoint drives from newegg, 4 GB of extra memory from OWC, Raid set up, and so on. For instance, I want to uninstall a program that I installed as I want to reinstall it. In Windows, you've this wonderful control panel that has everything. Mac's Utility folder has some stuff, but not what I am looking for. I love the right-click mouse feature in Windows; can't seem to have that work on my Mac. So, is there any kind of resource available which lists everything that the OS does without any pretty pictures or over-simplifications? The 81-page manual on Apple site didn't do much good to me. And, how do you uninstall a program? Throwing the .app file in the trash didn't help.

OS X :: Can I Uninstall The SL Upgrade

Sep 24, 2009

I'm so fed up with all the bugs in SL i encounter, i want to go back to 10.5.8, when everything just worked. However, SL messed up the connection with my TM backup disk (cannot access sparsebundle, error 109) where my 10.5.8 OS resides.

So now the only way possible seems to install with my original 10.5 disk.

Can i downgrade by doing an archive and install of an older system (leopard) over a newer system (SL) If it can be avoided i don't want to reinstall all my apps as well??? For example what will happen with all my emails?

So I downloaded PDAnet to my computer and I won't work, so I want to uninstall it. The website says to run the uninstaller from the home directory. I run PDANetuninstall.sh from the finder app and when I click it a textedit box comes up saying some jargon along with pdanet has been uninstalled, reboot. Well, when I reboot, pdanet is still in the applications folder and the uninstaller is still in the home menu, and can be run again.

Windows On Mac :: How To Uninstall Osx

Feb 12, 2010

I currently have accidentally deleted the entire Mac HD file and replaced it with the system file for Windows OS (entirely accidental). Point being is, to re-install Mac OS X, my computer is telling me I cannot do so while I have Windows installed as there is no available space for it. So...I am trying to delete Windows, without the ability to use Mac OS X, and so far, nothing has worked (I have tried Add/Remove Program -> Change/Remove Programs, but it thinks, for some odd reason, that there are never any programs on it, including the OS itself, which Windows help support says should be there...)
