So I set up my Airport Extreme with my speakers, and its great to have my music and videos play wirelessly... in iTunes! But I can't seem to figure out how to play sound through these speakers in other applications. It doesn't show up as an output source in my Sound preferences and other apps don't seem to let me choose my wireless speakers for sound. What do I need to do?
View 1 RepliesI've been looking for a router that'll let me share a HD via network and wow.... pretty much everything D-Link has some weird proprietary something or rather. Linksys has a few but the only one I can find that's also dual band is the wrt610n.
My Macbook Pro is out of the country for a while so I'll primarily be using my desktop PC for a while, and I have a girlfriend who uses her windows PC with a a/b/g/n wifi card.
So what do you think guys? Will APE work for me, or should I be looking into something else?
Can I partition the drive so I can use a portion for time machine backup while I use the rest for storage via fat32?
I have an Airport Extreme with a USB hub plugged into it and two hard drives plugged into that. I was wondering if there would be a way to add a pair of USB speakers to it and play music through them wirelessly (like AirTunes).
View 1 Replies View RelatedRight now I have have an external HDD connected to my MacMini, have my iTunes library on the external HDD and then set that library as the library on my iMac. That allows me to sync my iPhone with my MacMini's external HDD when over wifi when connected to my iMac. However, when I move that same external hard drive to the Extreme, set it as my iTunes library on my iMac I can watch video and listen to music on my iMac, but when I try to sync the iPhone iTunes just gives me a beach ball and I have to force quit. I find it strange that I can sync my iPhone to my MacMini's external hard drive over the network when I connect my iPhone to my iMac, but I can't sync to that same external hard drive when I have it connected to my Extreme. Am I doing something wrong or is that functionality just not there?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI attached external hard drive to Airport Extreme, set up home network and mounted the hard drive. My MacBook Pro can see the drive and all contents, including iTunes library. Our home PC which is running Windows XP also recognizes the drive and can see iTunes library in My Computer. Here is the problem. When I try to chose which iTunes library to open (Shift+click) in Windows XP, the library on my external HD is not visible so I cant open it! I see the cover art and music folder, just not the actual library. What am I missing here? I can see it in My Computer, why not in iTunes?! I need to link my external library to XP. Connecting external directly to PC will not work because I have a Time Capsule there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought an external hard drive for our airport extreme. Would it be a good idea to have our iphoto and itunes libraries on that hard drive, so that the various computers that we are using can access the libraries wirelessly?
If you think it is a good idea, how would you go about moving the itunes library? I think it's easy enough for iphoto, but itunes seems a bit more complicated?
I realize that my airtunes can only play sound from my music lib. When I play movies on itunes, airtunes cannot stream it.
so my question is how to make very sound on itunes to be streamed via airtunes. or it would be even better if Airtunes can stream all system sound.
Is there a software could do that?
This morning suddenly iTunes has stopped playing audio and video tracks - I double click and there is no sound, and the timeline bar stays on 0.00, if you drag no difference, same if you pause and play again. If you drag the timeline on a video file I get still. I've closed and restarted iTunes, and the mac itself

I have to think that at least some of the new features don't actually require new hardware. Was getting 28-33mbps download speeds using speedtest.net to test now i'm getting only 4-6mbps. WTH!!! Also the transfer rate for backing up my macbook to the tc drive is ridiculous!!!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
I have previously time machine backups for two macbook pros on same drive. However, I connect the drive to the airport extreme and although I see the drives and the backups, I can not access the files over Airport Extreme.

I want to avoid any conflicts with my old settings for my wireless network with my MBP. The latest upgrade of AIrport Utility doesn't support my Airport extreme, but the old version 5.6.1 says it doesn't work in Lion. How was I managing my Airport before th 6 update? What do I do now? Will I have to get a new Airport?

Just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router. Â
I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty. I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error. Try again." Well, tried again and still no luck.Â

I have two macbook pro's (wife and I both have one) and use it for my PS3 and Xbox 360. I started a new job and was given a free HP desktop (not my choice, but hey, it's free, so what can I say). The desktop is not wireless and I am not able to put my computer near the airport extreme because my TV already owns that territory. Today I bought the Airport express to use as a bridge (and other things in the future). I have plugged it in. I opened the airport utility using my macbook. It finds my extreme and my express. I select that I want to set up the express. I select that I want to set it up using an existing wireless network. I select my airport extreme. It tells me that it has to restart the express. I wait approximately 3 minutes. It then tells me that the settings to the express have been changed but it's not able to find it.
My main goal is to use the express as a bridge. I have the express plugged in beside the desktop and want to run an ethernet cable from the express to the desktop to allow for wireless capability.
I have a Macbook (white unibody) running Snow Leopard. I have a personal wireless network using an Airport Extreme and I have an external hard drive (WD) connected to the Airport Extreme. I use this hard drive for my Time Machine Back ups.
I just got back from a trip and tried to back up my time machine. I got the error that the back up disk is not available. I then tried to open the airport utilities.
It tells me that "Airport Utilities is unable to find any Airport Wireless devices". I find this doubly strange because I have no problem connecting to the internet on this wireless network which supposedly does not exist.
I bought the new airport extreme to extend the wifi range in my household and hoped to share a hdd. Upon my experience and reading the forums, the sharing hdd is not as easy as I thought. But that is not my issue at the moment.
My issue is with extending the network. A couple weeks of ago, I did the setup to connect the two airport extremes together (older round AE & new box AE) using aiport utility. It seemed to have work because the signal was stronger in a part of the house that usually had 0 to 1 bar.
But shortly after, the signal showed itself as inconsistent. The signal strenght is jumpy from 0 to full bars. And right now, I am sitting in a part of the house that used to have 0 bars and now, I get full bars. And yet my mbp cannot see the newer, closer in distance AE.
I am upgrading from a g wireless router to an n. I have a Belkin right now that I hate. Neither I, on a mac, nor my roommate, on a PC, can get a consistent connection on it. Needless to say it's going back and I want to get an express or an extreme. I had actually bought an Airport Extreme first and it was lightening fast, but I was told that the Express was just as fast, so I went to exchange. The guy at BestBuy told me the Belkin was cheaper and just as fast, so I bought it. I would really like this to be my last trip to the store for a router. Do I need to shell out for the Extreme or is the Express just as fast if all you need is an n router?

I was thinking of getting a time capsule for back up, but not sure if I could get it up and running with the Linksys or not.

I don't understand something very basic about the internet...
I have been using a 2WIRE wireless box plugged into my phone line/DSL for four years. I knocked it over and it doesn't seem like it is broadcasting a wireless signal anymore, so I bought an Airport Extreme Base Station, 2007 square model used.
I don't understand how to set it up... Can't I just throw away the 2WIRE thing now? When I try to use the Airport Extreme thing, it does not recognize the internet DSL signal or something.
I just want to use the Airport Extreme as a dsl wireless router alone.
I don't want the 2WIRE thing. The 2WIRE thing is usable when I plug my ethernet cord into it, but it is no longer broadcasing a wireless signal.
How do I set up the Airport Extreme with my DSL for wireless?

Over the past couple weeks I've noticed that my airport extreme's wireless signal has gone down. I bought it new in 2004, and it's always had a full signal everywhere in the house on multiple computers. Now the signal strength seems to be kinda random, somedays I'll have full signal and somedays it will drop to one 'bar'. I should note that it does have the latest firmware installed, and this happens on multiple computers new and old. So my question is if anybody has had this experience with airport extremes, particularly older ones?
