OS X :: Graphics Glitch? Using Snow Leopard

Mar 8, 2010

So for about a week or two now i have been experiencing this glitches that seem to come around after the computer has been on for more than 2 or 3 hours. I have noticed restarting the machine will get rid of them. I have a 2.4ghz MacBook with 2 gigs or ram from early 2008. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Does anyone know how to fix this? I think it might be a messed up graphics card, but i don't have much of a clue. I have noticed when trying to take a selected screen shot over the dock the glitches will go away, but they only happen on the dock, wallpaper, and window shadows, they are also random every time.

Mac Pro :: Graphics Glitch After Playing (wow)

Aug 18, 2010

I started playing World of Warcraft again after a 6 month pause. I have the same system (09 MP), but I discovered something new. From a fresh boot, everything works fine. I then launch WoW: it works perfectly fine.

After quitting WoW however, I get very obvious screen tearing all over my OS X apps. Windows tear when I move them side to wide in finder or any other app, and video has a similar tearing effect. I can't get rid of this problem without a restart... Can anyone show me how to "reset" my video without a complete restart?

[Edit-Solution: Enabling V-Sync *in-game* solves the problem *after* the game is closed.

MacBook Pro :: Graphics Glitch / Failing GPU?

Sep 22, 2010

System:
Macbook Pro
2.3ghz core 2 duo
Radeon x1600
OS 10.6.4

I'm seeing a severe graphics glitch. At first I attributed it to a VM, but it has started affecting my whole system. Repeated reboots will eventually clear the issue, but it will trigger again when I boot up a VM, watch a flash video, or do anything GPU intensive. This doesn't happen every time I perform these actions so I have had difficulty finding a specific cause.

MacBook Pro :: Showing Graphics Glitch / Can't Fix

Jun 28, 2010

So far this has happened twice to me, once while playing CS:S, and once today while playing TF2. You can kinda see the weird shapes that appeared on my screen in my picture, except in game they covered the entire screen. Is this maybe the GPU overheating? (I added the red circles afterwards btw)

Could it be a problem with geektool?

edit: btw, it was fine after a restart

It seems as if they came from WoW, because they were the same graphics and shape that a wisp would be, etc. Can someone try to explain? 0_o That was the weirdest thing I've ever seen, they just floated there and didn't go away until I restarted the program. Hardware :: Apple Acknowledges Graphics Glitch With Latest Notebooks

Apr 14, 2008

Apple is investigating problems with its new Penryn-based Intel notebooks that cause flickering and graphics corruption during media playback and web browsing.

The two issues have been widely reported by users of the company's latest 13-inch MacBooks and 15-inch MacBook Pros, both of which began shipping in February.

In particular, users on the Apple discussion forums say (1, 2, 3, 4) that QuickTime playback of video files is routinely marred by flickering or the appearance of "washed out" graphics on their new machines.

"When I am watching the Video Tutorials for any of Apple products my QT flickers dark and light, not to the point where I can't see the video, but to the point where it is annoying," one user wrote.

"Exact same problem here," replied several others.

Meanwhile, the same batch of users are also reporting instances of graphics corruption on their machines when scrolling through Safari webpages or Mail messages -- both of which rely on Apple's Webkit framework.

"My wife has got a current gen Macbook Pro that is exhibiting a very strange behavior," one user wrote in an AppleInsider forum thread on the subject. "When she's on battery power she gets graphical glitches/tearing when scrolling in a browser."

"I have a current generation [MacBook Pro] and I have the same problem," said another. "Also when loading web pages, often with pictures, the content in the active window flickers a lot."

Thus far, it appears the anomalies are the result of a software glitch rather than a flaw within hardware. Several users attempting to diagnose the problem on their own report that the issues became noticeable only after installing the Leopard Graphics update that was released alongside the recent Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update.

One user even went as far as to install a build of the still unreleased Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update -- which is said to include fixes for graphics corruption -- on his system to see if it remedied the issue. Although he claimed the upcoming update fixes the problem, another user performing the same kind of check reported that while 10.5.3 does indeed alleviate some symptoms, it "doesn't completely correct the issue."

Graphics corruption experienced on Apple's new notebook systems.

For its part, Apple over the weekend formally acknowledged the issues for the first time in an email response to one customer.

"Apple has received reports similar to the behavior you are describing and we are investigating those reports," the company said. "Further information will come in the form of a Knowledge Base article, Software Update, or Software Release."

OS X :: Snow Leopard Graphics Update Stability

Oct 13, 2010

For a while, my MacbookPro, which is a MacBookPro5,3, has been telling me that I have updates. Among the updates was a graphics update. Back when my iMac5,1 ran Leopard, I blindly got the graphics update, so it is no longer usable, unless I use Ubuntu Hardy on it. I do not want to run into that issue again, since I have programs that I need on my Mac for me to be productive, as I started writing books and publishing them through Lulu (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.). Is the Snow Leopard graphics update going to cause stability issues, like the Leopard graphics update did on my old iMac5,1? Right now, I am getting all updates, except for the graphics update, that are available for my MacBook Pro.

OS X :: Apple Releases Snow Leopard Graphics Update For Mac 10.6

Aug 17, 2010

Apple on Tuesday released Snow Leopard Graphics Update, a patch for Mac OS X 10.6 that is said to improve performance and reliability of popular titles like StarCraft II and Portal. The 69.2MB update was released by Apple Tuesday afternoon. It is available from the company's support site, or via Software Update. It requires Mac OS X 10.6.4. According to Apple, the software update contains performance and stability fixes for graphics applications, including fixes that: address frame rate issues occurring in Portal and Team Fortress 2 on certain Macs resolve an issue that could cause aperture 3 or StarCraft II to unexpectedly quit or become unresponsive.

The update addresses framerate issues on the titles Portal and Team Fortress 2 for the late 2009 and mid 2010 iMac and Mac mini; early 2009 Mac Pro; early 2009 and mid 2010 MacBook; and mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15- and 17-inch models. The update also resolves an image corruption issue that may occur when disconnecting and reconnecting external displays while the system is running. Valve, the maker of Portal, Team Fortress 2 and the Steam gaming client for Mac, said in June that it was working with Apple to improve the performance of games running in Mac OS X. The company said that improved drivers from Apple would have the greatest impact on performance. "We are making a lot of progress identifying specific issues that need work inside the game and inside OpenGL and drivers," Rob Barris of Valve said at the time. "Apple, ATI and Nvidia are all involved."[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade To Snow Leopard ... The Same As The Full Version Of Snow Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.

However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.

My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?

Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?

I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

MacBook :: No Bootup After Leopard Graphics Update

Mar 1, 2008

Last night I installed Leopard's Graphic Update. I can't boot my macbook since then. Stuck at the gray screen with apple logo. Here's what I already tried to do: Boot with leopard DVD and run Repair Disk - it tells me the disk appears to be ok. If I click on repair permissions tough, it takes a long time and then hangs. Nothing happens, the progress bar even stops spinning.

I then tried to boot with Disk Warrior 4.0 (it's the version I have). I tried reparing disk and files permissions there, and it worked ok. But I can't boot after it as well. Again in Disk Warrior, I tried clicking REBUILD to get my file directory back and retrieve my files, but after some seconds it states there is not enough memory. I hope this is RAM memory, because I just ordered a pair of ram chips, Im gonna upgrade it to 2gb (I only have 512mb ram, first gen intel macbook core duo)

So tried SAFE MODE (shift), nothing. Single user mode, typing fcsk -y , reports the disk is ok, but nothing as well. I have a time machine backup from 11 days ago (apple makes it so easy to backup and I cant even bother plugging in my lacie firewire external hd, retarded me), and for me that's kind of unnaceptable. I go to university and thats 2 weeks worth of priceless annotations, I really need to get them back.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Software Update After Snow Leopard Clean Install

Jul 3, 2012

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store). When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.

I began researching this problem online and found that other people have been experiencing this same problem (or some variation of it), and it seems like it began appearing around the time Apple updated some of its security certificates in March. In particular, I've found several references to the missing iPhoto update. This one is especially noticeable because an iPhoto library created in iPhoto 9.2.3 will not open in iPhoto 9.0, and this generates an error upon opening the program (i.e., a user backs up their iPhoto library created in 9.2.3, performs a SL clean install, reinstalls iLife, goes through the Software Update process until it shows that no more updates are available, and are shocked to find that they are unable to open their backed up iPhoto library because they have an out of date version of iPhoto). The most common (and admittedly logical) solution proposed in the threads I've read is to download any necessary updates directly from the Apple website.  However, I am curious as to why this previously functional feature now appears to be broken.Has anyone else been struggling with this?  Does it indeed have something to do with the new security certificates? Is Apple aware of the problem?

OS X :: Mac OS X 10.5.5 To Address AirPort Glitch

Sep 2, 2008

Development of Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update appears to be winding down, with only a couple of new fixes making their way into recent builds, including one aimed at wireless issues.

This past week saw two new pre-release distributions of the 320MB Leopard update fall into developers' hands. The first arrived mid week as Mac OS X 10.5.5 build 9F25, but contained no noticeable changes from the build the preceded it.

More recently, developers were treated to build 9F29. That build tacked on a pair of fixes, one of which tackles an issue between Macs and previously joined AirPort networks, people familiar with the software say. The second fix was related to a graphics framework.

Seemingly at the tail end of its development cycle, Mac OS X 10.5.5 is reportedly hindered by a single known bug that prevents emails from being searched properly in Apple's Mail application.

The fifth maintenance and security update for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard now stands to deliver 125 bug fixes when it's released later this month.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

Mac Pro :: 8800 Video Glitch?

Sep 17, 2008

I got my Mac Pro in March. So I've had it for a good 6 months. In that time, at least 3 times my 30" Cinema Display has shown some sort of video glitch. I'm convinced that it is the 8800, and not necessarily the Cinema Display.

What happens is, out of the blue, and for reasons I'm not sure of, I will get a strange pattern of brightly illuminated pixels on the display. They are "fixed". In other words, If I move and image around on the display, those pixels are stuck and do not move with the image. Also, if I take a screenshot, they do not show up on the screenshot at all. I had to try and take a picture with my camera to show you guys. A reboot and/or logout/login fixes it. I think it is some sort of bad video RAM or something. I've already upgraded to 10.5.5 and it did it again last night. I'm pretty sure it was the result of DVD player crashing. But then again, I don't know if DVD player crashed because of a video glitch. The DVD was kind of scratched up (netflix) and the computer did have problems reading it. DVD player beach balled when I tried to skip a chapter so I have to kill it. That's when I noticed the display was all screwed up.

3 times in 6 months isn't a huge deal, but it does make me worry about a pending hardware death of either my display or video card.

Anyway, have you guys seen this? Is it a cause for concern? Is my 8800 on the way out, or is it most likely some sort of driver or app hiccup that isn't really a big deal?

In these picture you can see the randomly scattered light green pixels. It's almost as if a color has been swapped out.
