View 22 Replieswhen I open my Network in System Preferences, "Network settings have been changed by another application" pops up and every time I click Ok, it pops up again, not letting me be able to access any other option in the Network window. The wireless icon has disappeared from my top bar and the only way I have managed to get online is via my ethernet cable. I have had nothing but problems since I started using my O2 Wireless Broadband dongle and I've noticed that behind the "Network settings have been changed by another application" notification, I can seen the Dongle has appeared as a new network connection option... but was never there before today (have been using the dongle for two months now)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running an iMac G5 (just pre Intel) using OS 10.4.11. My internet is via an external modem, ethernet connected. Everything is working fine (as far as I know!) However, for no particular reason I opened "System Preferences" and on clicking on "Network" was confronted with this:- [URL]. On clicking the OK button nothing happens and the only way to get out of System Preferences is to Force Quit it. As I can't get into "networks" in System Preference, I have no idea how the settings have changed. I can't remember when I last installed any new software - it's also ages since I looked at that section of System Preferences.
View 2 Replies View RelatedBeen a rough two weeks. I had the issue of my iMac not loading passed the grey screen. No keystrokes were working so I had to bring it in to get repaired. I was told some optic something cable had to be replaced.
Well, initially that didn't work but it just ended up taking forever too boot. 20 or 30 minutes. Now it is loading fine and Windows is also loading fine with bootcamp.
However, I can't get in to turn on my USB wireless adaptor for Sprint. I can open the system preferences and I can also go in to any other option without problems, but if I click "Network" it says Loading Network, then hangs up. I need to force quit and retry. Same results. Anyone know how to repair that? I have tried Disk Utility and it says no problems. Diskwarrior doesn't let me do much since I am booted to that drive.
Something has happened in my Network preferences and I believe it happened while doing a Spotlight search. When I open the Network preference window, I get an almost instant error dialogue stating "Your Network settings have been changed by another application". As soon as I hit "OK" to dismiss the dialogue box, it comes right back. If I'm really quick, I can get back to the main preferences screen before the warning reappears. I've tried logging out, rebooting, trashing the Library --> Preferences --> apple.networkConfig.plist file (followed by a log-out) and nothing has made a difference.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the dropdown, I have QLM WiFi (which I have no idea what that is), National Access - Broadband Access (which is my wireless card) and Automatic. Whenever I make a change and hit the "Apply" button, my MBP freezes.

How to get connected? Just changed to BT Infinity and installed the McAfee Security package could this be the cause?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running OS X 10.4.11 on a "pod" iMAC. When I open system preferences and click on network, I get a pop up window that states my network preferences have been changed by another application. When I click on the green "OK" box the pop up goes away and comes right back. This is driving me crazy because when it gets into this cycle it's almost impossible to get out of the preferences panel or even check the settings! It's like it gets into a closed loop and won't let you do anything.

I'm not talking about the System Preferences app itself, I'm talking about the settings within the app. So for instance, the security settings, and the mouse settings, energy saver, etc.
Where can I find the settings files on my Mac so I can back them up?
could not be sure whether the Admin user - password reset with the CD would be the solution to my question as suggested in previous threads I searched - and have no idea where my start up install CD is
So my question-
I was trying to put parental control to ask for password when my computer starts up. I did something I guess and messed up the info.
I can log in with my own account when I restart my apple - which says now it is a standard account (must have messed that up)- but can not make any changes on system preferences or anything else that requires login and password. It requires Admin info. My own login that I use now used to be my admin so do not have any other info set.
now on system pref - accounts - an account titled "test" seems to be admin but can not even access that and reverse myself to be the admin since I can not unlock system pref. Or cant click on "Login Options" for the same reason.
There are no other users on this computer than me.
What do I need to do to make myself admin again?
Hope this was somewhat a clear question
I recently took the plunge and installed Lion after being content with Snow Leopard....well now I have quite a few issues. When I open system preferences for some reason it automatically opens to Network...why I'm not sure. When I click show all, then click sharing, I can't make any changes in the Sharing preferences without my entire system locking up. I can't force quit or anything. I can still use the mouse but all I have is the rainbow wheel!
I have searched and searched and haven't been able to fix it. I have tried booting into the Guest account and the same problem happens there. I have trashed all the plist files everyone says to try. I have tried repairing permissions etc. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there anything else that I can do without have to do a clean re-install. I'm hearing if I do this that I won't be able to migrate my files from by backups due to permission problems?
I also took a look at my system log and it is full of this!

I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I used to have a VPN for my office set up in Network preferences. Something messed up all my network preferences, but I am able to connect to my wireless network, but when I go to set up my VPN connection again and click Apply, nothing happens and the connection does not save. I also cannot edit my Locations.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy problems are getting bigger and bigger:
1. I could not activate my airport card after installing 10.6
2. I erased all data in system configuration as other threads told me
[URL]
3. Then my MB said that there is no airport card installed (but it is)
4. After that I tried to reinstall 10.6 but DVD stopped loading and said it interrupted
5. Now Im even not able to open network preferences! It loads, and loads, and loads...
6. I installed 10.6.1 but nothing happened
I feel like snow leopard (and my attempt to clear the situation) killed network on my MB-Pro.
apologies if this has been answered else-where but Ive looked and found no solutions. My problem is that I cannot access network preferences. I can access system preferences and turn my airport on/off via the toolbar, but I cannot actually open the network preferences without system preferences unexpectedly quitting. I have to access my universities VPN to read an e-book for an exam, so this is quite frustrating right now,

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm posting here out of desperation and to end my eternal head-scratching over how to fix this... I'm running os x on a macbook pro, and I've never had any problems switching between different wifi networks. However this past month I switched service providers at home, and discovered that my mac automatically tries to connects to what I assume is the neighbors' wifi now (which is password protected, making it even more strange).
I can make it connect to my own network instead by pulling the airport status icon on the top bar down to it but it's obnoxious to have to do this every time I start up the computer.I know the way to fix this is to go into network preferences and change the order of preferred networks, but then i'm hit with the kicker.... for some reason, i cannot change any of those settings! They show up grey and unmodifiable. These are screencaps of what I'm talking about:any thoughts on what might be causing this or how I can fix it? Forgive me if there's some super obvious solution... but I cannot figure it out.
iMac OS 10.4 - was working with dial up modem but wanted to plug into my network for high speed internet access - after plugging in RJ45 cable, the network was not accessed but the computer continued to go the dial up route. When attempting to change network preferences a flap keeps appearing saying the preferences have been changed by another application - this flap appears over and over and will not allow preferences to be changed. Dial up still works by clicking on the phone icon at the top of the screen. Any way to reset this without reinstalling the system?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor school, I need to set up a VPN connection to be able to connect my MacBook to the internet. While my school offers the Cisco VPN Client with a preconfigured PCF settings file, I would much rather use Mac OS X's built-in VPN capabilities, through the Network Preferences. Now, my problem is that I don't really know what to do to get this working. Using an online password decoder, I already found out what the password for my school's VPN connection is. But how do all the settings translate between the Cisco VPN Client and Mac OS X's VPN configuration screen?
The PCF file tells the Cisco VPN Client to use Group Authentication, with a group name and a group password (the one I already decrypted). These are already filled in. When starting a connection, I am then asked to fill in my student login details. Now, in the VPN settings screen in System Preferences, there is a box for Account Name. Am I right in thinking this is the box where I fill in my student ID? Or does the group name go here? Then, when I click Authentication Settings..., I can fill in a password. I assume this is where my student password goes? Or should I fill in the password I decrypted?.................
My automatic location in the network preferences disappeared. i canconnect to the internet anymore ps. im not a mac expert, just got my first one

I have recently begun to use a fios router for my home network. When originally set up by fios they set the security to wep, and I set my network prefences as such. Since then I have changed the router to wpa security My network prefences still shows that wep encryption is being used. It still connects to the net but I can't figure out how to change it to reflect wpa security. Or since I am connecting to the net , is it necessary.

I'm running OX 10.4.11 on a G5. I have airport on my computer and at one point was able to share files from my desktop to a laptop. However at some point something happened and I can no longer do this.
I can't get into my network preferences as the following message comes up - "your network preferences have been changed by another application" and I have to force quite to get out of the window.
I have since purchases airport express and my husband got it to work at home. Now I just tried to install it on my desktop and it won't work. There are probably numerous problems here.
I have just changed my ISP on my windows 98 machine. Now I am working on the mac and trying to download a message with Mail but it is not working. The computer is connected to the internet ok and I can see the message in my webmail in Safari but it will not download. I have changed my account details in mail preferences but obviously I have missed something. The help file told me to check my network preferences but when I click on that, a dialog box keeps dropping down from the top to tell me "my network settings have been changed by another application" and there is a tab to click "ok". That is all and when I click that, it runs over and over again and doesn't let me do anything else. I don't know what has been altered but I do not want to alter any settings to my broadband connection because that works fine. That is the main trouble I have with a mac.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer just got back from the shop (in Vienna, im studying abroad till august) because my computer wouldnt start up anymore after crashing multiple times. They replaced the RAM and said that they couldn't get airport to work. but that wasnt exactly the whole story. Network Preferences apparently doesnt exist anymore. I've tried to locate the com.apple bits that should be resettable, and I've tried a PRAM restart. still no network settings, and no internet at all. Super frustrating since i just picked him up today.

I have an iMac OS X 10.7.3 (purchased in late 2010) with all updates current. I use AirPort to connect to my Linksys router with a WPA2 password.
Nearly everytime I wake my computer from sleep, my wireless router is disconnected, even when I have set my settings and clicked on the lock to prevent further changes. My router always shows on the list of available connections with full strength, but it is more often than not extremely difficult to get it connected again. It says "Could not join "myRouter". A connection time out occured."Â I usually have to use the assistant and go through the steps, which usually includes re-typing my password four to five times before it agrees that I know my own password (which is fairly simple to type, I can't possibly be entering it incorrectly that many times).
I downloaded and installed an update [URL] that quote: "resolves an issue that may cause an iMac to not automatically connect to a known Wi-Fi network after waking from sleep. It is recommended for all iMac (Late 2009 or newer) users running 10.7.3." Â
I tried setting a new location, and set the DHCP setting under TCP/IP to be manual. I was successful in connecting to the internet that time, and locked the settings to prevent further changes, yet the first time my computer woke from a sleep, the lock was unchecked and the settings were changed back to automatic. And I was disconnected yet again.Â
This has been going on for months, but in the last couple weeks I have found I am now unable to lock the lock to prevent changes, no matter if my Location is set to automatic or one that I have created. Really looking for resolution as this is wasting so much time, I am on and off the computer multiple times a day.Â
