OS X :: Firewall Preferences Not Saving After 10.6.6
Jan 13, 2011
I have two computers that seem to have stopped saving my firewall preferences after upgrading to OSX 10.6.6. Each time I start each computer, the system asks whether I want to allow or block connections for a variety of programs, including iTunes and several UNIX commands (cupsd, compressord, ftpd, krb5kdc, qmasterd, qmastertaskd, smbd). Why aren't these settings being saved upon shutdown? Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

I tried to enable my firewall by clicking on the security panel in the server preferences, but it isn't there. I am using FireVault and I have Snow Leopard installed in my MacMini OSX. Am I vulnerable to malicious attacks in the internet?

My itunes sharing isn't working so it says to open up a port. I was looking at the directions apple gives for that and it says:
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Sharing.
Click the Firewall tab.
Check the iTunes Music Sharing option.
When i got to the sharing button there is not firewall tab. my computer is fully updated..where is it?

I was looking through a few apple videos on the site and noticed that one of the icons was different, I haven't noticed it before but the energy saving icon is showing as an energy saving bulb, which makes more sense. Is this new? or an old design?

is there a way to save the user settings prior to doing a clean install of OS X ? i am not worried about backing up files or additional software that has been installed, just the user's system preferences that you manually set up throughout the use of your machine. and if this is possible, how do you go about reinstating the user preferences after the install is completed ?
i'm trying to decide if it's worth it for me to do the install as i have plenty of storage space left, but it would be nice to take care of this now rather than later. i've read through the install steps on the forum and did not see anything in regards to this issue.

I'm not talking about the System Preferences app itself, I'm talking about the settings within the app. So for instance, the security settings, and the mouse settings, energy saver, etc.
Where can I find the settings files on my Mac so I can back them up?

What's the best (Software)Firewall solution for OS X. At the moment I work with a mixed environment ( ipfw, Apple Application Firewall and Little Snitch ). It seems to be secure, but this is an absolute overhead. I noticed, that my internet performance slowed down. For the moment I'm not able to spend money on a hardware solution. I'm searching for a complete Firewall software that controls incoming as well as outgoing connections ( Apple seems not to be interested in distributing a complete and easy waterproof solution ). Unfortunately ipfw offers no application control. I'm not a security expert, thus I need an easy configurable firewall.

I've got a problem with my new mbp, mac os x snow leopard. It can't ssh. I've got no firewall running, can do ssh localhost and can ssh *into* my mbp from another machine, but I can't ssh from the mbp to another computer. If I do: ssh -v 192.168.0.6, hich is my wifes debian comp, I get:
OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config
debug1: Connecting to 192.168.0.6 [192.168.0.6] port 22.
debug1: connect to address 192.168.0.6 port 22: Operation timed out
ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.6 port 22: Operation timed out
I've tried uncommenting "Host *" and "ForwardAgent yes" in /etc/ssh_config (I read you had to do that on some other forum), but it doesn't help. I can ssh into my wife's computer using any other os than mac os x. This is extremely annoying, since I can't comfortably fetch my old files to this new computer.

I have a 21.5" iMac connected to my basement ADSL Modem/Gateway via 25ft long UTP cable. Other devices (PS3, HP Laptop using Win 7, etc, etc.) are connected to the same ADSL Modem/Gateway via wireless. If wondering, this ADSL Modem/Gateway has its own firewall enabled and its application selection (for port forwarding) customized as well.

I live in China, its great, but I hate the firewall. Ever since they blocked Youtube, I've been trying to get a good connection to a proxy server. I still have not found a good enough proxy to watch youtube. So I am looking for a paid VPN, but I don't know what would be the best to go for. Since my connection in China is bad enough I need a VPN that doesn't slow down my connection any more.

I noticed after my initial install yesterday that the firewall does not appear to be on by default. Just throwing it out there so people can take action to activate the firewall.
I haven't checked to see if ipfw is doing anything out of the box, but I imagine not.

Just curious how important is using a firewall?
I currently have two Macs where one is a wireless base station using an older mushroom shaped Airport extreme, using a WPA/WPA2 network. Both my Macs have just had a fresh install of 10.6.

Where is the location of the firewall log in Leopard?
When I click on Security> Firewall>Advanced> Open Log nothing happens.
I can't access the internet since I can only connect to a private address starting with 169.254.xxx.xxx
I'm thinking some firewall issue has suddenly made not able to use DHCP to access the internet.

A couple of days ago, I thought I'd try a 3rd party firewall to beef up security on my 2008 MBP running 10.6.2 on an ethernet connection using a router (nothing changed there).
I installed Little Snitch, tweaking its settings (don't remember what I tweaked) to customize it to my preferences as I went thru two 3-hour demo periods. Then I uninstalled it (using its own uninstall). I also tried Noob Proof to see if a free program might serve, but wasn't happy with that one, and uninstalled it using AppCleaner.
At some unknown point during this 24 hour period, I lost my internet connection, and I can't get it back.
Things I've tried:
-Ran network diagnostics several times - it says I've got a good connection, and Activity Monitor shows small amounts of data being sent and received.
-Turned Mac's firewall off & back on a few different times. Can't get online even when the firewall is off.
-Turned on the guest account and logging into it. Can't get online thru the guest account either.
-Re-installed Snow Leopard just in case it might re-set whatever is wrong.
-Looked at LOTS of logs (including Little Snitch's log) to see if I could find the source of the trouble, but while no dummy, I'm also not an expert at reading logs.
-I've also tried connecting to Software Update for a direct connection, thinking maybe it was a browser issue, but can't get connected to anything, anywhere, anyhow.
Any ideas?

Whats the general consensus on OSX Firewall. It's not enabled by default and I never knew the option existed. Is it problematic at all, or prone to slowdowns. I am behind a home router
