OS X :: External HDD Showing As Read Only?
Apr 16, 2010
I recently purchased this external hard drive. I transferred several GB of movies/TV shows/music onto it from a Windows 7 PC. Now that I've hooked it up to my Macbook (10.6.2), it shows up as read only.

I have my macbook, iphone, and (new) imac all setup as icloud accounts for email. All email is coming through just fine on each device. However on the new imac messages which have been "read" on the iphone or on the macbook are still showing up as unread in mail on the imac.

I have this SD card and it is showing up as read only. Disk Utility does not give me the permission to reformat or change it from read only. As you can see from the screenshot, everything is greyed out and it will not let me modify it in any way.

Using an iMac 2011 with Mavericks 10.9.4. Been having issues with the Mail client leaving mail that has been read in the 'unread' smart box. The account is an IMAP, and I have done the empty the whole thing and start over routine, and that works. However I don't want to keep having to do this over and over, since some of my boxes are large.
is there something that I need to do on the other end of the IMAP, since the email is on a domain I own, not gmail or yahoo.

I've been running all of my emails through my iPhone since it was released. Just recently I picked up a new Mac Mini as a work machine, and I set up Mail to handle all of the same accounts as my phone, with the thinking being that I can read and respond to messages when I'm at the computer, and when I step away, be able to read the remaining emails on my iPhone.
What my problem is, however, that both my Gmail and Hotmail accounts don't seem to "sync" properly between the phone and the computer, meaning that mail that I've read or deleted in Mail on the Mac Mini don't show up as being read or deleted on the iPhone, and vice versa.
I don't want to have to delete a message on my phone if I've already taken care of it in Mail.

I just converted a few of my Bluehost-hosted email accounts from POP to IMAP. These accounts and Apple Mail, itself, is on my hard drive (not in iCloud). For some reason, after about five minutes of sitting untouched in my Yosemite Apple Mail inbox, emails sent to these three addresses appear to be "read." The blue dots disappear, even though I haven't clicked on them. Seriously, they haven't been touched. That's not true of the email accounts I have with two other providers (CoreComm and GoDaddy) that I left as POP accounts. They stay marked as unread until I actually click on them. What could be causing this to happen?

Wondering if anyone else was having any weird issues with their iCloud and unread count in the Mail app on their mac running lion? I can't seem to get rid of a phantom unread message. My iCloud account is fairly new so I don't have that many messages to go through so I know there is not an unread message any where.

I have an external Transcend HD, which has been working perfectly fine for around 5 months now. It is NTFS, and I use NTFS-3g and Macfuse. Been running fine. Was able to read and write. Suddenly I am only able to read though. I go into the "Get Info" pane and the option to choose whether I want to read and write, or read only is gone, and all that it says is "You can read only". getting this back to read and write is really appreciated. I really need this disk.

So my entire iTunes library (about 200 GB) is on an external HD.
After I installed Leopard it's showing as Read Only. There is not option for permissions and in Disk Utility all I can do is verify the disk.
Obviously I can't delete or add files or do anything but read them.

I got a macbook pro and a My Book 1tb. Want to finally put away my old PC (which is running only on UBUNTU) away but I need to get the files off my PC onto the My Book. Well after setting up the time machine and what not I move the HD & connect it to my PC & attempt to drag files onto it. Says it's read only. Tried changing the sharing options to read and write for everyone on my mac. Still the same. Used disk utility to wipe clean the entire HD. Still read only. Posting this on Ubuntu forums but I'm positive the problem is on the Mac.

i have a sony vaio external hard drive, and i formatted it using my PC, and it worked perfectly fine - i can read / write files to the HD.
however, it was shown as a 'read only' HD once i plugged it to my Mac.. i even tried it with my friend's Mac and the same thing showed.
i tried to repeat the formatting and plugging with both my PC and Mac over 10x time and it's only giving me the same result.
does that mean my mac is not compatible with the HD?

I am sure this is a simple question, but I am having a problem going from windows to mac with an external hard drive. I can read and write to the drive on any windows PC. On my macbook pro laptop, I can only read. It will not let me write or erase anything to the drive. Does this have to do with the drives formatting? If so which format will let me both read and write on mac and pc?

Before you peek into this topic to say "OS X can only read NTFS, not write to it", save the effort; I already know that. I have a 1TB WD MyBook Studio. I partitioned this drive into 2 parts, an Mac OS Extended partition and, using Win 7, an NTFS partition. Now my MBP can mount and see its partition just fine, but it refuses to mount the other NTFS partition, seeing it in Disk Utility as MS-DOS (Fat) format with a weird name. How do I get the MBP to mount the NTFS partition?

Every time I reboot my computer my external drives are all set to "read only". I have to eject them, and remount them and things are then fine again, but this is an annoying step and the fact that a reboot is causing them to switch to read-only is having me worried.
Anyone else have this problem/know of a solution?
I've been trying to figure it out over at the official apple forums but we're not getting anywhere... the thread is here:

I bought an Iomega Prestige 1TB external harddrive a couple months ago with it running off my Macbook Pro.
I just flew down home for spring break, leaving my Macbook Pro charger at school. However, I do have the harddrive with all my backed up files. The problem is, my PC laptop (Dell, Windows XP) does not recognizes it. When I plug in the harddrive and turn it on, the computer recognizes that there is something plugged in (it gives me the option to safely remove hardware), but there is no sign of the drive anywhere.
Is there anyway my PC can read/recognize it?

I've got a simpletech 2tb hard drive which I've used for time machine, but all of a sudden it won't read when I plug it in. I can hear it power on when I plug it in but it won't show up. I've tried plugging in other devices to make sure the ports are still good and tried restarting with and without the hard drive plugged in. I've only had this hard drive a week and haven't done any improper device removals to it. Also, I am running snow leopard with all the updates.

My hard drive was filling up, so I decided to try and move my music over onto my external. I thought I could do it without reading any guides and I ended up in a royal mess. I now have the folder Music/iTunes/(Album Artwork, iTunes Library, etc) copied over onto my external.
I have completely uninstalled iTunes from my computer, and my internal hard drive has the user/music folder clear.
What is the easiest way to have my iTunes reading my music from my external? I would like to keep playlists and playcounts if possible.
I am on a computer with Mac OSX 10.5.8.

I just got hit with a double whammy. :Imac running Panther did something odd to the it's external drive. That was formatted fat 32. I plan to see if anyone in the nearby computer repair class can recover those files, but in the meantime (days!) the gremlin also hit the macbook, putting it in range of a spill. So now the only backups I have are on the second external drive formatted with a mac format on the macbook. This one was done with 2 partitions, one for Time Machine, one for the stuff I was yanking over from the other hard drive.
So now I find that Imac can't even SEE the second drive. (Not that I expected it to see or recognize Time Machine, just the other part.) My macbook is on downtime until it gets checkup/cleaning (with all mac places nearby apparently closed thru New Years and classes I need it for starting right after) Does anyone know a way to get "Ye Old Imac" to see the other drive? Is there a driver or something? I know it's very hard to find older software (most online sites don't go back past Tiger), but it is a mac format for goodness sake! I can't even be 100% sure if it's something to do with a newer mac format for the external drive or "Ye Old Imac" is just being grumpy. It seems to see the other USB stuff but it has been known to lose touch with them.

I have an external hard drive, it's formatted in NTFS, sort of like a 'bridge' between my Macbook and my Windows machine. I was able to write to the NTFS drive from my Mac using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. A few days ago, the hard drive showed up as 'read-only', and is still that way now. I've tried repairing disk permissions, reinstalling the NTFS applications, nothing seems to change the write permissions back.

Just about to format my external harddrive as its read only at the moment (only adjustable on a Windows machine).
I've opened disk utility and chosen my external HDD from there... my question is, which format do I use? Theres about four appearing:
Mac OS Extended (case sensitive)
Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, journaledd)
Mac OS Extended
Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Which one do I choose and why?

I installed snow leopard and now my permissions for my external drives (mac formatted) are now read-only. It wont let me change the permission, or change owner, even when I go through root account (regular account is an admin).

I have a 1TB external HD being used for media. I have it connected to a Mac Mini which until recently was running Snow Leopard Client quite happily. This is my living room media centre. Last week I moved the Mini to SL Server for unrelated reasons. The external drive is now stuck as a "Read-only filesystem". I have tried every method known to Google and man to open the drive to no avail.
Some things you should know:
-The drive is called 'Monkey'
-*any* commands entered with sudo or as root that target Monkey are returned negatively as a result of 'read-only filesystem'. This includes chmod, chown, chflags, etc.
-diskutil cannot modify the volume: 'read-only filesystem'
-vsdbutil cannot modify the volume: something about the automount routine
-running 'ls -alO' produces the following (baffling) echo:
drwxrwxrwx 18 mediacentre staff - 680 27Nov 00:37 Monkey
This means that the volume apparently is fully read-write by all users and does belong to my admin user ("mediacentre") and should be accessible by other users of the machine and there are no flags? No Access? The drive has not been physically jumped to read-only (I even checked in case a housemate way playing a prank) and nothing has changed other than the computer which initially formatted the disk out of the box (i.e. the original owner was 'that' root) has been replaced. I've backed up the disk and am prepared to reformat the dang thing, but I can't even do that, since nothing can target my mystical read-only volume!
