I want Safari to show the download box when I e.g. click on a mp3 link, instead of opening it with Quicktime inside Safari. Other browsers has had it in preferences where you could specify what the browser should do with what file types. How do I change this behaviour in Safari (4 BETA btw)?

I just downloaded a .mpg video file and when I tried to open it in QT it said that the file could not be opened. Any way around this like a plugin or something?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI digitised some old home videos and all worked very well, except that now some of them won't open on my iMac (OS X 10.5.4). The files are all .mov files and only one of them opens without any problems with Quicktime, with the rest i get a message saying "The movie could not be opened. This is not a movie file". At the Mac support counter I was told that I just need to download a codec and that should solve the problem - but I lost the piece of paper where he wrote down the name of the that codec and I can't remember what it was now... done tons of googling and nothing seems to match.
Safari downloads .wav files from my dictation manager web site with a .exe extension. I'm assuming this has something to do with the MIME types defined on that page. I can't fix that as the web page is not under my control. Is there a way I can tell Safari not to do that, or how to handle these files?

Lately I'm having trouble downloading pdf files that are open in the Safari window. I'm using the latest versions of Safari Adobe Reader on an IMac OSX 10.6.8. I used to download them simply with "command s", now it says "the document ... cannot be exported".

We recently got macs at work which I am accustom to working on at home, however, my workflow has kind of changed at work in regards to the way I do things now. One thing that irritates me is that Safari seems to automatically download files instead of displaying them all in another tab or something. I don't want to have to have 20-100 downloaded files in my download folder!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was all set up and running fine for years running safari and getting my files downloaded to my chosen place on the desktop. I am also using Safari Speed and Safari Stand as accessory apps. Everything was working GREAT until a program called � GLIMS � sent a notice while online that the program had been updated. I clicked on Update and then all the problems Started. I removed � GLIMS � from my computer but I still can't download ANYTHING as I did before. When trying to download a file like Safari Speed, I get this message in the Activity Window of Safari as seen below:

I started having an issue with Safari this afternoon with the Downloads windows not showing the files that are downloading. The Downloads window will show the number of files downloading at the bottom of the screen, but the window is completely empty of files. The files do download, but I would like to be able to see the status of the downloads.
Any ideas on how to get the downloads to display again? I have tried resetting Safari and rebooting, but no luck so far.
I had a friend who installed Adobe Reader 9 onto my Mac which I didn't want. I went and got rid of the programs from my mac. Now I have an issue with opening PDF files in Safari, and ask me to find Adobe Reader. How to I turn Safari around to open PDF files in Preview program, like it did before my friend screwed it up.

For some reason Safari won't open PDFs. Not sure if I can download them but PDFs that are supposed to open with a script (for example, can't just open in a new tab) do not open. Nothing happens. It won't even auto download or anything.Just tried Chrome and it downloaded just fine off the same web page.
Can display PDFs just fine if going directly to PDF link, but it definitely doesn't open with script based ones

Finder tells me that it's a QuickTime Movie file, but QuickTime Player says "QuickTime Player can't open "Movie on 4-12-12 at 8.20 PM" because the movie's file format isn't recognized."
Why won't it open, and how can I get it to open? Additionally, I recorded a different video this morning and it plays just fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedEverytime I open an AVI in Quicktime it crashes. If I try to open an AVI through iPhoto it tries to open Quicktime and then Quicktime crashes but iPhoto doesn't. When I try to import these AVI's into iMovie it crashes again, this time taking iMovie down with it.
I have the following codec installed in Quicktime:
AC3
Xvid
DivX 6 (latest for Intel)
3ivx
Now here is the really weird part. I used to have a PPC Powerbook up until last week and the AVI files I am now trying to play in Quicktime worked fine even without any plugins so this is really weaird. Even still, if I came across a file that Quicktime couldn't play it never bombed out on me, it just produced a green or black screen with just some sound. The AVI plays fine in VLC but I need to edit them in iMovie.
After updating Quicktime to 7.2 it has gotten really slow when opening a movie, VLC on the other hand does this in an instant.
I can open Quicktime Player itself pretty fast, but when I want to open something, I get the beachball spinning for about 5-10 seconds, only then I can switch to the player and watch it.
This is really annoying.. I don't want to use VLC, because it is not that stable and I hate to use its FF feature. Is there something I can do about it? I tried downloading QT player from Apple and reinstalling.
lately my Quicktime X gives me a delay of 10-15 seconds and a beachball before playing any file. Quicktime 7 plays without a hitch instantly. This is true of files on all locations on my Mac.Â
The file opens instantly, I see the first frame, but before it plays it will berachball. It is true for video and audio files.Â

When I download a Word or Powerpoint file, Safari adds a second extension to the files - .dot and .pot. What does this mean? Word and PPT 2008 recognize the format and it opens fine on my computer, but if I send this back to someone with that extra extension, I can imagine I'd run into problems.

iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.
When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.
On Rapidshare, I've download a lot of files such as .rar files on my mac and everything has worked fine. Up until today, I downloaded a few and they are windows files because they have the parallels symbol (Yes I have parallels) but my parallels isn't running. So i went back and tried to download old files that I had previously been opened with Mac OSX and they too are opening as parallel files. I dont understand why all the files want me to download the windows version. The only thing that I changed was i finally upgraded my MacPar Deluxe because there was a new version but that's the only thing. So can someone please help me fix this problem. I dont want to download windows files while on my mac.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy OS is Leopard 10.5.0. I updated my quicktime to 7.4.5, then when i rebooted, finder and spolight arent opening and crashing. Then, with appcleaner, i uinstalled QuickTime, but the problem continued. So i deleted the QTKit.framework, the console pointed it by the center of the error, so i did it. I also deleted the plists or something like that, reseted the pram and nothing, repaired permissions, verified disks and nothing!! I tryed to install the combo updater 10.5.2, but for some reason, while in the 'choose drive' part, the program freezes.I also tryed to install via terminal, but i got this:

So a while ago i installed iGetter and jDownloader to handle some of my downloading needs. These have both been uninstalled a while ago and i seem to have the problem that if i navigate to a file in my browser it will not download, it just sits there and does nothing.This is really anoyying as i can't download any files anymore
I presume one of these applications has disabled this behaviour in os x so that it can hijack it and use the app to download files. Does anybody know how to revert this so that browsers can handle downloads properly?
