OS X :: Double Entry Applications On "Open With Menu" In Snow Leopard
Oct 24, 2009
I'm having a little bug on Snow Leopard and I wonder if any of you may have the solution to fix it. When I choose a file and I go to the Open with menu, I see that there's a double entry for some applications. (Real Player, VLC) Is there a way to clear this so it only shows one single entry of the applications and why does this happens?

So I found an Automator script that let me compress in the Rar format. I created the correct folders (~/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder/) and went to see if I could compress just some folders but I have no "More.." contextual menu entry. In Leopard I had it. How am I supposed to use Automator workflows now? Am I alone in not having this entry? I have the 10.6.1 update installed.

Installed Snow Leopard and lost the ability to double click to open folders in Finder. I can right click to open folders but prefer to double click. Any ideas ? I can double click in other applications with no problems.

When right clicking I get a double 'Open with' menu. It's not double entries of programs, I literally get two working open with menus. Here's what I get: [URL]. I have cleaned up my 'Launch services' database, but it didn't work.

I have the same problem in this thread on the Apple support website: [URL] The only solution suggested was to reinstall the os. "I'd be using firefox with no problems. I'd go to load a page, and firefox would get stuck trying to resolve a host name (implying DNS wasn't working, at best). I'd click on the airport menu item, but the menu wouldn't open. I'd move the mouse cursor off the menu bar. When I move the mouse cursor back over the menu bar, I'd see the beachball. Ill finder windows get the beachball. Killing the finder did nothing; wouldn't fully die or restart. I'd have to hard-reset the machine to recover."

I was taking a look through my secure.log just now, and I happened upon this strange entry. I tried Googling for it, but no dice. Can anyone provide some insight? It looks kinda scary...Apr 25 22:06:11 Rath com.apple.SecurityServer[25]: Succeeded authorizing right 'system.burn' by client '/Applications/VMware Fusion.app' for authorization created by '/Applications/VMware Fusion.app'

Alright, so work bought me a new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard. I had been used to using Leopard on my home machine and the iMac I was using before for work. In Leopard and older OS X's - you could double click the name of the window and it would minimize. Now with Snow Leopard...it doesn't work. Am I going crazy or is it hidden somewhere?

I have this really annoying issue where my mouse will randomly double click in OS X when i didn't actually double click my mouse. I had this problem before in Leopard (with different mouse) but now it seems the problem has returned with snow leopard. has anyone else had this problem? I checked the mouse properties and there's nothing strange there. I also don't have custom drivers installed. Just default snow leopard drivers.

I've been having a problem with Snow Leopard since I installed it, and it's been bugging me like mad, but I haven't been able to find a solution or anyone with a similar case anywhere. Today, however, I tried again, and I ran across this news article, which perfectly described my problem:
Quote:
Finally, twice in the past week now I have experienced a very old Mac OS X bug that I thought was gone for good: All of a sudden, when I try launching an application, the application's Dock icon starts bouncing endlessly in the Dock and the application never fully launches. Instead, eventually (after a few minutes of endless bouncing), the bouncing stops, but the application icon stays there without the status light indicating that it's open, and right-clicking on it results in an "Application not responding" message. You can force-quit and try again, but it won't work any better the second time.
And once this starts happening, if you want to get anything accomplished with your Mac, you really have no choice but to restart the entire machine.Has anyone experienced anything similar and/or knows how to fix it? It really inhibits me from doing almost anything with my Mac when I can't open any applications./edit: To add some context, this only happens after my laptop has been running for a while and seems to affect some applications but not others (maybe those that have already run since restart are fine?). I still have over 1.2gb of free RAM while I try it, so I don't think it's a memory issue either.

I've just got a MBP 13. I was able to set the speed at which the applications open, so rather than the little icon in the dock bouncing 3 or 4 times it bounces twice then opens. I cannot find where I did this. Also is it ok to set it to the fastest if you like?

I added a network printer (HP Laserjet 2300) to my MB (OS 10.5.8) printer list and I can print single sided just fine. BUT there is no option anywhere in my print menu to print double sided. My two labmates can print double sided on this printer (one using MBP with OS 10.6, one a Windows PC). The menu on the MBP looks different and where I have the "reverse pages" option, they have a "double-sided" check box.
I have already:
-Checked the Duplex Unit box on the printer info menu in System preferences
-Looked at ALL the sub menus in the printer menu
-tried to reinstall the drivers (current driver v. 4.3.5.153 - I suspect this may be the issue because the MBP that can print double sided has driver v. 16.something). Actually the HP site was extraordinarily unhelpful in telling me even what version of drivers I should have or getting me to a place where i could download.
-Restarted my computer with various iterations of the above.
This printer can and does print double sided -just not from my computer because I don't have the check box.

With UPS plugged in (APC) via USB, there are two "plug-in" icons - side by side. When power adapter is removed (on battery), it changes to two vertical rectangles with two dashes within each. When UPS is unplugged from USB, these change to a "battery and a half" - in other words, a normal horizontal battery indicator plus half of one to the right. The same will happen when on a/c - you end up with a normal horizontal "plugged in" status plus half of one to the right.
Toggling the "Show battery status in the menu bar" will return the icon to normal - as long as the UPS remains unplugged from USB.
Bottom line - as long as the UPS in connected via USB, there will be an incorrect power status icon. With it connected, a double display; when disconnected, one and a half normal status icons will be displayed, until the "Show battery..." is toggled.

I did a clean install of Snow Leopard. Every thing is fine except iMovie is not opening. Whenever I try to open it, it pops up with the following error message -
'Quartz Extreme required'
'iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme.
One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.'

Without using an external program, that is. I know you can change it with an external program, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to modify it from within OS X's files themselves?

Is this possible? I find it annoying to have a file open in Preview and then having to either locate it or save it to allow me to open it in something else (like Acrobat or Photoshop). An example: I have just been sent a pdf that I need to open in Acrobat pro to merge with another one. Using Entourage the only things I can do are save or open, opening it results in it opening in Preview - which is usually what I'd prefer, but in this instance, I need to edit it, so I have to save it somewhere and then open it again from Acrobat. Preview is great, don't get me wrong, and not having to open up the whole program first in most cases is brilliant, but sometimes it's a pain that I can't subsequently open the file I'm previewing in a different program.

I cannot find the Menu that will allow me to start a new backup plan. When I access TM thru Preferences, System, TM - I get the TM Icon with ON-Off/Select/Options. When I access thru Appliations, I get the black screen history selection display. Where's the Menu everyone is talking about? How to start a new TM Backup from scratch?

I was trying to install some services that I created using applescripts and ThisService. The problem I'm having is that Services is not available in the menu when I right click on a folder or file. Looking under Keyboard in the system preferences, I can see all of the different services that are availible. I have the ones I'd like to use checked but no services appear in the menu when I right click. I've tried resetting defaults in the preferences, logging in and out, restarting and nothing helps. I found another post that said open terminal and run this /System/Library/CoreServices/pbs. When I enter that in the terminal, I get this message "No languages specified - assuming English" and nothing changes. I'm running 10.6.8 and I know that Services used to be avalible in the menu.

You know how context menus on the mac are sometimes slow? I've figured out this has to do with the services menu.. located under keyboard -->services in the left-hand sidebar. My question is how do apps put services in that menu.. and how do I remove rather than disable a specific menu item?Â
I guess my broader question is how do I completely uninstall applications when I no longer have the original app bundle? I'm just concerned about clutter acclumating over time.Â

I hate MS Word, but I find that I can't get rid of it just yet. I love Pages, but I need the thesaurus capabilities of word. I need to be able to right click on a word and have synonyms come up in that very menu, no opening dictionary or another pop-up.

After opening a MSfile the Leopard top menu when using Microsoft Word 2008 has been changed to Chinese. This issue only happen with this product and not with the rest of the Microsoft tools that I have installed in my MacBook (example: Powerpoint). I'm including a print screen (as you can see only the iOS menu is changed to Chinese and not the software menu). I extremely need to change it back to English!Â

I've discovered this weird thing and wonder if it's just my system. If I set the double click speed to its maximum value (System Preferences -> Mouse) I can no longer open with double click folders that are on my desktop while it still works from the finder. I got the same thing from the mouse and from the trackpad. I have OS X 10.5.6.
