MacBook Pro :: Fiber / Dust Under Screen - What To Do

May 2, 2010

I just got a mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro in the mail about a week and three days ago. Couple of days after doing some work with it, I noticed a little fiber (dust) approx. 1 centimeter long that is lying underneath the glass cover for the display. Anyways, I called up AppleCare, and the support adviser told me that she could either replace it, repair it, or just give me my money back. I certainly don't want a replacement, since most of my software cannot be installed on multiple machines without having to deal with the developers directly.

So my only options are to either get it repaired, or deal with it. Since the repairs would be free, it is what I'm leaning towards doing, but I have read some cases where people send their gear in to Apple to get dust removed, only to get it back with more dust, or even worse: they replace the display entirely, and it happens to contain dead pixels! Also, over time, even if your display is perfect when you first get it, do these displays tend to get dust behind them anyway? (if that makes sense.)

I've tried a couple other cards that have been lying around, but none of them fit in the two pci slots. The pictures of the Stallion GE-II on the website show that the copper connectors don't match the motherboard PCI.

MacBook Air :: Custom Composition Notebook Skin

Dec 7, 2010

Just wanted to start a thread here to say I came up with an exciting skin for my precious 11.6" MacBook Air. Even though I lucked out with the 50% discount at ZAGG on their Cyber Monday sale to pick up a plain invisibleSHIELD, I returned it unused when I came up with this concept. I'll be posting the usable skin images on ZAGG's Custom Skin Designer page as soon as I receive the final ZAGGskin product from them (hopefully before this weekend), apply it on my Air, and take some shots with it. My last skinmod with a Leica camera skin on my iPhone 4 was well-received enough to be picked up by Gizmodo on their blog post. In the meantime, this is a Photoshop mockup of what it will look like.

MacBook Air :: Skin For 11" - Protects From Scratches

Jan 12, 2011

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7) On my old MacBook Pro, I had a Speck hardshell, and it was great, but added a lot of bulk. So for my new MacBook Air 11, I want something that protects it from scratches without making it ugly and bulky.

The choices I'm considering:
1 - ZaggSkin - I like the fact That I can choose my own design
2 - ICarbons - Looks really sleek
3 - Wrapsol - Keeps the naked look with a matte finish, unlike the invisibleshield, which is shiny and reflective..

What do you recommend, if you have experience with any of these? Hows the quality?- I dont want it peeling up after a few months.. Or is there anything better?

MacBook Pro :: Review Of 2008 Skin From BestSkinsEver

Dec 3, 2008

After much anticipation I received my new Macbook Pro aluminum body a few weeks ago and it was missing something very crucial, a protective covering. Of course no one wants to disturb the precious looks of their new elegant Macbook Pro, the only way to preserve the original look of the laptop is by a skin. There are currently two highly praised companies that provide skins for many electronics from cell phones ipods and to laptops. Bestskinsever www.bestskinsever.com $27.99 and Invisible Shield www.zagg.com $54.99. I currently have the BSE version installed on my Macbook Pro and find it great. Let me start off with explaining what comes in the kit.

What is Included in the kit: I should use the term Kit useless because it comes in a large envelope with 3 sheets each having different parts of the total body skin attached. There is one single piece for the top part of the laptop, a cover for the battery compartment, a small piece for the latch for the battery cover, another piece for the remaining underbody, two separate pieces for the wrist guard near the trackpad and one for the trackpad as well (I did not use the track pad and will explain later). In addition there are 2 pieces that run along the front two sides of the laptop before it hits the express card slot on one side and security lock latch on the other side. There is one strip covering the portion of the back side of the laptop which is attached to the main lid and two small strips covering on the rear edges of the laptop. Basically this kit has you covered on every level for protecting your new $2000 investment. The great thing about the kit is that it does not cover up any screws which is noted on the bottom side of the laptop. also there is a space for the button for battery life so that is not covered up...................

MacBook Air :: Keyboard Skin's Effect On Internal Speakers

Nov 15, 2010

Has anyone noticed that with a keyboard skin, the sound is much worse (muted, no treble) on the MBA? Is this common to all Macs or is it only on the MBA? Is the keyboard the, y'know, vent or something for the speakers?
I have a 13" MBA, and a Moshi clearguard skin.. I'm a first time Mac switcher so I didn't know if this was common. I do 900miles of research before every purchase, even been lurking around this forum for ages now, but I never read about anything like this - only that keyboard skins may or may not make it run warmer.

MacBook Air :: 3acp Skin More Decorative Than Protective And InvisibleShield

Sep 29, 2008

Here are some pics of my Macbook Air with a 3acp skin and an invisibleShield. I also have a skin on my iPhone. Pictures of that as well as bigger versions of the above pictures can be found here. Honestly, the 3acp skin is more decorative than protective by far on the outside, but on the inside, I feel much better putting my sweaty palms on the skin. If ever the skin gets worn out from my palms resting on it, I can remove it and replace it easily. Also, I had thought I wasn't going to want the part on the trackpad, but it was easier to install it and then remove it than to install the rest of it while avoiding installing the part on the trackpad. So I installed it all to start with the intention of removing the trackpad portion, but after it was installed I was surprised at how much I liked it and how smoothly the mouse still works. I also figure that this will also protect that portion of the laptop from being worn by my sweaty and oily fingers.

Hardware :: Keep That MacBook Cool?

Jul 9, 2008

I am a big-time gamer and I recently bought a MacBook where I am doing most of my gaming. I play World of Warcraft on my machine pretty much every day. This was causing my MacBook to get incredibly HOT and also caused the fan to spin like crazy. I looked around a bit and decided to buy the Zefyr from Moshi since I already had their MacBook case, the Codex, and have been really happy with it. I have to say I am really impressed with the Zefyr MacBook cooler. My fan doesn't spin any longer when I'm gaming and you can honestly feel the difference in temperature. Any other hard-core gamers or video / photo editors out there might want to take a look at this!

MacBook Pro :: Best Way To Cool 15"?

Oct 14, 2010

I have spent the past two hours looking for a good review on a laptop cooling pad and haven't found much. I'm aware of where the MBP's vents are located and how that renders most options inefficient. However, I plan on doing some gaming on my 15" MBP and although not very effective I assume a cooling pad would have some effect if only in the 5-10 less degree category.

Any input on a device that is both ergonomically comfortable while lessening the temperature even moderately would be appreciated.

I plan on using 3rd party software to adjust my fan speeds before I begin gaming rather than waiting on the machine to notice the increased temps. SMC seems like the best option any input on this software or general manual adjustment of fan speeds would be appreciated.

I should note i'm not interested in the cooling crystal pads as it seems they only prodive cooling for 2-3 hours.

MacBook Pro :: Overheating - How To Cool Down

Jan 5, 2008

I have a 2.0 macbook with 2g ram 80gb harddrive with 29gb free. My problem is that my macbook runs idle at around 130-140 degrees fahrenheit. When I go to Youtube it goes up to around 160 degrees and when I go to Google Books and open up a page my macbook reaches around 180 degrees I also do a lot of audio production and temperatures reach a steady 165-180 if I have a fair bit of processing going on.

What the hell is going on? I need to use google books for school and don't think it is safe to use my MB at such high temps. Also with all of the audio work I do I imagine that the lifespan of this computer will not last very long.

MacBook Pro :: How To Cool Down GPU Temperature

Sep 6, 2009

I happen to have a Late 2007 MacBook Pro (The specs are in my signature). My model was also the one affected by the 8600Gt issue so I had taken to a nearby Apple Reseller in Dubai in 2008. It's been months since that happened.

However, I've been monitoring my CPU & GPU temperatures and I'm still confused about what is ideal and if I should be worried about anything.

(I took a screenshot of my iStat readings and there's a difference of atleast 11C between the GPU Diode and GPU Heatsink)

Is there anything alarming that I should be worried about?
