Jun 5, 2012I have a mac book pro...one of the older models...around 5 or 6 years old..the silver one with the silver around the screen part. Running Mac OS X 10.6.8,
2.33 GHz, 2GB ram.
Lately my computer has been rediculously slow with everything, but aside from that my issue is with my start up disc. I would have over 1.5 GB of space left, open up a photoshop file...make some alterations and save...and all of a sudden I have NO SPACE left. These alterations created the photoshop file to be like 50mb more. Its a 200mb file. So how can I go from 1.5 gigs to saving a 200mb .psd file and all of a sudden 0 hd space?
Sometimes I couldnt even save the .psd because when I opened it all of a sudden I have half a gig now. And even if I had half a gig why wouldnt I be able to save? I go to save and sometimes it says "your start up disc us full" - Is this different than my harddrive?
Is photoshop using some sort of weird caching thing?

OS X :: Full Screen On External Monitor?
Mar 8, 2008I have my MBP hooked up to my TV. I was trying to get Front Row to run on my external monitor without having to move the Menu Bar over, but I quickly realized that was not going to be possible. My next idea was to play the videos straight from iTunes and just make them Full Screen. Having the videos playing over there works okay (my MBP screen is still normal), but as soon as I press Full Screen my MBP goes black. Is there any way to run full screen iTunes on my TV without losing functionality from my MBP?

Feb 27, 2010I have a Unibody MacBook Pro from the Late 2009 line.
When connected to a TV, it used to be able to make the TV 1920x1080 but for some reason it won't do that anymore. It's not on mirrored, and I can't think of anything I've done to mess this feature up. Some people are saying that MacBooks can only support full res on externals by putting the computer to sleep, but I HAVE done full res before with both screens awake.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be much appreciated, it's driving me insane!
UPDATE : I think the port on my MacBook may be slightly damaged. A small wiggle of the cable makes the screen go black. I then have to fiddle with the Display Preferences or replug it. Should I call Apple or something?

MacBook Pro :: It Won't Use Full External Display
Apr 1, 2012I got home today, turned on my computer while connected to an external monitor and all of a sudden, my MBP (13", late 2011) won't use the whole display. Instead the screen is squashed and i got two black gaps on either side of the monitor. The resolution is set to 1920*1080 as always, so that isn't the problem. Also, when I set the monitor to all other resolutions, it stretches all the way out, it's only on 1080 it doesn't work even though 1920*1080 should fill out the whole screen, while some of the other resolutions shouldn't. I have the displays set to extend, so the MBP's display is set to 1280*800 as usually, and everything functions perfectly on both displays except for the gaps.
I've tried closing the lid and playing around with the external monitor itself, but I get the same results. I've also reset the PRAM and SMC; same thing.I can also add that on the Windows part (Boot Camp installed) it just plain won't recognize the external display at all. Everything worked this morning...

Feb 23, 2012I was editing an attachment from an email. When finished I did a 'save as' and did not pay attention where the default save was located. When I tried to find the file it was not easily located in the usual places. Finally, I found it in an apparent folder labeled "mail downloads" My question is what is this file - temporary files? Can the files in this folder be deleted to free up space? Will I lose the attachments from emails in my box?

Applications :: Netflix Plays Full Screen On External Monitor In Safari On Snow Leopard?
Sep 7, 2009For the last year I have been searching for a way to play Netflix instant streaming content on my external Cinema Display connected to my iMac. Once a movie was playing full screen on the external display if you clicked on anything on the main display the movie would fall out of full screen and back to window mode. This is highly annoying and I really wanted a solution.
I ran across Plex some months back and they had a Netflix plugin which solved the problem, or so I thought. While Plex could play movies from Netflix full screen on the external display without falling out of full screen, it came with a host of compromises. The first compromise was that in Plex my instant queue never reflected what was actually in my queue. Recently I had 116 movies in my queue and Plex reported only 80 of those. Worse if one of the movies I wanted to watch was missing I would try to use Plex's Netflix search function and Plex would still not find the movie. Some titles simply could not be found through Plex, a problem the author acknowledges and says he is working on with no ETA. The other issue I have with Plex is that the fast forward and rewind functions that work so well in the Netflix browser based player do not work at all in Plex, making navigation in a movie painful within Plex.
So tonight I set out to look for an alternative to Plex, I came up empty handed. Then I had an idea, I searched my Mac for the Silverlight plugin and when I found it was greeted with a window stating that an update was available. This has happened several times before and each time I updated with the hope that Microsoft fixed the external monitor viewing problem, but it always remained. So this time I updated and proceeded to run my usual test which is to put a Firefox browser window on my external display, play a movie, and then click the full screen button. The movie went full screen which it always does, then I clicked in my other Firefox window open on my main display, as always the window on the external monitor fell out of full screen.
Dejected I went on to my second test which is to perform the exact same sequence I just described but using Safari instead of Firefox. Again it went full screen on the external display but this time something was different! The window where I clicked full screen froze and a new window opened behind it in full screen. Now I had two windows open on the external display, the smaller frozen one and a full screen one playing the movie behind it. I minimized the small window which left only the full screen one playing on the external display. Then I clicked on a window on my main display and the movie continued to play full screen on the external monitor! Thinking it was a fluke I closed Safari and tried it again, it worked perfectly!
This is awesome now I can play my Netflix movies on my external display in full screen without any issues and I have all of the features of the Netflix browser based player, in particular fast forward and rewind.
One last thing, prior to this working playback in a browser window was extremely choppy for me. Plex did not play choppy and it was another reason I was using it for playback. Now in full screen with the browser based player through Safari there is absolutely no choppiness.
Just for reference here is everything I am running:
OS X 10.6
Safari 4.0.3
Silverlight plugin 3.0.40723.0 (which interestingly is dated July 23)
Even though my system told me an update was available I am confused by the July 23 date of the plugin. Maybe it wasn't the plugin that solved this but rather my newly installed Snow Leopard in conjunction with Safari 4.0.3? Whatever the case I am thrilled to report that it finally works!
Desktops :: Full Hard Drive On Mac Mini
Jul 2, 2010My son is having a BIG problem with his Mac Mini. His Mini has a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, memory of 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and runs Mac OS X Version 10.6.3. He has Time Machine and also a 1.5TB desktop hard drive. From time to time, he has been getting pop-up warnings that his internal hard drive was about to become full. He would then do some deleting and things would be fine until the next pop-up. Last week, after watching some videos on Utube, he tried to open iTunes and, instead of a pop-up, got an error message with some numbers (which he didn't write down). It began the usual routine, starting with a white screen with the apple logo in the center and the loading circle spinning right below it. After that, it normally goes to a light blue screen and then loads the desktop, but this time (and ever since) it stopped at the blue screen, empty except for the message "Hard Drive Full, Please Delete Data".
Apparently the screensaver still works, but not much else -- like the Finder. He said that he did get something to appear on the top bar by taking the batteries out of his Apple Bluetooth keyboard, bringing up the "Bluetooth Setup Assistant", but once a wired keyboard is plugged in, everything on the top bar disappears (since the Mac sees a keyboard). He was going to do a "restore" and, in preparation, thought he had done a successful back-up to his external hard drive using the Time Machine feature. However, when he checked the Time Machine under System Preferences it said that the external HD had nearly 1.5 TB unused (only a couple hundred pictures or so on it) and the Time Machine was supposed to put about 70GB on there. So now he is concerned that he didn't/can't do a back-up.
OS X :: Hard Drive Almost Full - What Can Be Deleted In Library
Oct 8, 2010Well, a little about me, I'm a proficient computer user, however, in my semi-recent switch to Mac, I am going through the learning curve of the ins and outs of Mac OS X. I'm a video and audio editor and do a lot of graphic design work as well. So, I have a 320GB (~300GB usable) drive with Mac OS 10.5.8 and a whole lot of software installed. This is a production machine, so I don't want to do anything experimental with it. Hopefully someone with expertise in the area of cleaning cache and needless files will drop by this thread.
Here's the basic rundown of what's on the drive:
/Library = 62GB
/Apps = 22GB
/Users.../Library = 87GB
/Users.../Docs&Desktop&Music&Movies&Pictures = 90GB
Other = ~20GB
Free space = ~20GB
I have plenty of external drive space, so I can move a lot of the User stuff off and clear it up for now, but I just can't understand why the Libraries are so big. But this is because I don't know that much about Mac OS X. Are there any no brainer places to clean cache and unnecessary files? I have read around a bit and so I am not going to be poking around in the Libraries unless I know what I'm doing. I'm cautious because like I said, this is a production machine.
OS X :: Macbook Pro Hard Drive Completely Full?
Dec 5, 2010Not exactly sure what happened, but I think it has something to do with the new iPhoto? I booted it for the 1st time off my external drive to create a X-Mas Card and imported 4 photos into it. Don't know if after opening it, it attempted to import all the photos from my external drive to my internal drive? Don't know why it would do that but there is no sign of it in the Pictures folder. Any ideas? Only other thing I did was sync my iPad, so I went into my backups and deleted all those files and it freed up 16gb. I started last night with 44 gb and don't know where in the f the rest of my space went? I've used DriveSlim to attempt to find any wasted space, but nothing turned up Is there a way to see specifically what happened last night?? I have Time Machine running I've restarted my comp, and still stuck around 16gbs......clueless as to where this Hard-drive space is being used. I've gone thru all my main folders (pictures, music, movies, etc...) and its not being wasted their....has to be hiding somewhere in my Library or what?

Now I am in the navy and will more than likely get sent out to a ship soon. That being said, I am limited on space of what I can and cannot bring. Apr 21, 2012I just signed up for Liverdrive in the hope that I could smoothly access every file (music, photos, films, documents etc) from any of my devices.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer all the files from my MBP to the Livedrive Briefcase drive (stored online, not locally), but to my surprise I found out this morning that something strange had happened:
Before my HD (240 Gb SSD) had around 120Gb free space, but after the attempted transfer I get a warning that my startup drive is almost full (500 Mb free space).
My problem and subsequent question is:
I cannot see those files that were supposedly copied anywhere on my MBP, but in Finder I can see that the HDD is indeed full.
