My external HD is full using time machine and my internal HD is getting full can I reformat this external HD and split my file between my external and internal and use time machine on a new big external HD and back them both up?

System Preferences->Sound only shows Digital Out for OUTPUT and Output Volume is maxed and can't be adjusted. Mute is NOT checked.
I've done an SMC and PRAM reset with no change. I've tried multiple times plugging and unplugging the external speaker cable jack.
Is there a cheap way/compatible way to record audio to an external CD burner rather than the internal drive?

I'm a newbie desperately seeking tech advice on how to remedy a full-to-overflowing 160GB internal HD problem and add more RAM. I have a 2009 Mini (2.26 core 2 duo, 2gb 1067 DDR3 RAM), along with a pair of 1TB external USB HDDs (one 1TB external USB drive dedicated for time machine), and a 3.5" 300GB Velociraptor drive borrowed from a friend. MOst important to me is I want to absolutely minimize any chance of jeopardizing/risking losing ANY files/data already on the drive or avoid any time-comsuming selective file deletion just to make room on the "Macintosh HD" internal drive.
One friend suggested I make a bootable clone of my internal drive onto a larger drive, which I did with a program called SuperDuper, i made the copy onto the Velociraptor drive. Presently the WD raptor is running on an external USB docking station. Then I was told to make the external drive my startup drive. However, all my external drives use USB (no Fire wire interfaces). The problem is when I go to system preferences the only startup disk choices are the (full) Macintosh 160GB HD and Network Startup. I cant for the life of me figure out how to specify one of the external drives as a startup disk, although the 3rd party application SuperDuper! claimed to make a totally bootable clone onto the Raptor drive.
As a short term solution, I also received advice on copying a bunch of the larger files, like my iTunes video library (at least 50GB) onto one of the external USB drives, deleting the contents of the Movies folder on Mac HD, and inserting an alias for the files or folder pointing to the copied movie files destinations on one of the external 1TB USB disks. I'm scared it will adversely affect iTunes being able to find the files on the external drives. Can I make an alias for the whole iTunes Movies folder or do I have to make them for each of the files I copy?
I need to summon the courage to try and open the Mini case and see if I can implant the cloned drive ultimately, but I wanted to try and get it to boot externally first before I got into the innards. Anybody have a link to a photo or video step by step how to on the actual case cracking operation?

Expressed another way, what I want to do is simply upgrade the internal drive with a larger and faster drive without any risk of losing data. I was thinking there out to be a relatively painless route to employ an external drive to function as a logical extension of the internal drive, so that OSX would see the stock internal drive plus an external drive as a single "virtual" volume. Although pricey, I was considering a SSD drive for significant performance increases.
As to RAM upgrades, what type of memory slot arrangement is inside the case? I wanted to upgrade to 8GB, but 4GB would be acceptable. I need some recommendations on what type of RAM modules to obtain to make this happen.

A few months ago I bought the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive adapter. I was going to purchase my first laptop and knew there would be drives I could take from my G4. This was my first real experience with USB 2.0 and boy do I hate it. I do mostly video editing and I very regularly transfer huge amounts of data from drive to drive. USB 2.0 waaaaay too slow compared to what I was used to. Hours to transfer 40Gbs. I now regret not getting a FireWire enclosure.How does everyone feel about those HDD docks that take SATA drives? To me it seems very economical. I understand a smaller bus powered drive would be good for travel because a dock or larger drive needs a power source.

I know it wont fit INSIDE the enclosure but luckily the enclosure has a back panel with all the hookups that come off completely so i could just plug it in and sit it on a desk while its in use.
I'm currently using the 2TB drive as my time machine backup and the other drives for mostly media files (lots of movies, tv shows, etc.). What I would like to do is combine the non-backup drives to show up as a single drive in leopard. Is this possible? RAID 0 is out of the question since they're different sizes. How I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, If this is really good using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? Does anyone know how one can use both the internal laptop speakers AND the external speakers connected through the 3.5mm audio port? My speakers are spread around the room and this would be a good way to get a more '3D feel' of the music.
I am thinking of doing this:
Tray 1: SSD boot/apps
Tray 2: 1TB storage drive
External 1 FW800: 1TB storage drive
And then mirroring the TB drives with a OS X software Raid 1.
But, if one drive crashes, is the other drive instantly usable? How do you separate or recover the "mirrored" drive in a Raid 1?
Also, can you do a Raid 1 with a drive on an SATA, and then a FW800 with such different transfer speeds, will the FW800 drive be able to write as fast as the SATA one, or will the SATA one have to slow down?
What is the best way to have an internal drive in the Mac Pro, and then have it real-time mirrored on an external? Or is this not possible.

Have written off the Momentus XT due to endless reviews of noise, heat and battery zapping. Is this just the way all 7200 internals are likely to perform though?
If so, should I maybe continue using my 5400 internal for apps and os, and buy a FW800 7200rpm for my media?

So I made the HD external by putting in an enclosure with all my music/software (I DJ). I bought a used MAc yesterday with Snow Leopard installed 10.6.1. This Mac recognizes my old external drive when plugged as a USB. BUt when I try and put that old HD in this computer, it does not recognize that HD. It displays a folder icon with a question in the centre of it. I don't want to DJ using my external drive all the time, I would like to use it internally so not worrying if the plug accidentally comes out.

Is there any way to 'move' 10.5.8 to the internal drive and the 10.4.11 to the external, even if it requires another external drive to accomodate the swap, without reinstalling?There is plenty of disk space on each.
