OS X :: Desktop Refreshes Several Times After Startup
Jan 17, 2009
When I start/restart my mac os x 10.5.5 (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) the desktop refreshes several times before going back to the pale blue screen and then refreshing a final time. The mouse is then sluggish and/or jumps sporadically.
What I've tried:
AppleCare, Apple Hardware, Onyx

I have a NAS server, when i want to use it, i have to go to the network list in the finder, then click the server to list its volumes. My question is, how do i make a shortcut to that server on my desktop? It seems it is not possible in the finder, but i am open to a terminal hack if necessary.

So today I went to my friends house for a party. Her and her friend were taking pictures on photobooth. But when I went to the desktop the icons for "Macintosh HD" and everything else on my desktop were 4 times as big than it's supposed to be.

OS 10.4.11 iMac G5. The finder "refreshes" every minute or so closing all its open windows. It stops any finder activity during this "refresh." For example, copying a file to another disk--it will interrupt the process. It does leave application windows open but leaves the program to go to back to the finder. It does not matter if I am actively using the applications or not. I have been interrupted during this post several times already.

I just found out that I will be able to order a whole bunch of stuff in October for my office from a Grant our school got. (I know, its a way off), and I want to get some info on possible hardware refreshes. Here is what I'm looking to get.
Mac Pro
2 x 24" LED ACD
17" MacBook Pro
I just received a new Mac Pro a few days ago from our last fiscal year, which was the 2 x 2.88ghz Quad Core version. Can I expect a new refresh before October on the current specs? The 17" MacBook Pro that is currently out will do perfect for what I am going to use it for, but I don't want to put in a spec sheet if it will 'possibly' change before Oct. I don't need to hear the normal stuff, that if I need a notebook now, get one etc. I have a perfectly fine 15" MBP, this is more for a order that is still somewhat off.

I had a bit of a dispraxic moment the other day and meant to do one keystroke but ended up doing another (I work on both the old- and new-style (aluminum) keyboards and sometimes misjudge where the keys are). Anyway, God knows what I've done but now, when I move my mouse around the screen, the desktop moves. If the cursor is in the middle of the screen, all is well, but as I move out towards the edges, the desktop moves by about 10 pixels in that direction. At first I thought it might be an issue with the settings on the monitor but I've logged onto that machine remotely this morning and it's still doing it - the frustrating thing being that now the whole screen refreshes every time I move the mouse.

Today I ordered my new iMac 24" 2.4ghz with 2gb of ram and got the wireless keyboard and mouse. I am wondering if apple updates the iMacs can I send mine in becuase I probably won't get mine for 3-5 days and the updates would come on Tuesday. If I can send it I'm what do I have to do and how can I do it. Also if they changes the ram to 2gb standard do I get 100 back because I updated it. Apple updated it to the new imacs at no aditional cost, I now got this: 24" imac 2.8ghz, 2gb ram, 320gb hdd, 256mb ati graphics card and wireless keyboard and mouse. Also from amazon for 200 dollars less than what apple charges i got the logitech z-5500 digital 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I have a white macbook. Today, I downloaded "handbrake" off their site. I didn't realized that it would use almost all of my processing power, so I tried to convert a DVD to mp4 while doing other things. that didn't work so i restarted the computer and did it again, this time having that be the sole program running. it worked beautifully. Then, when I tried to get the mp4 file to iTunes, my computer froze and so i restarted it, and tried again. My computer froze again, so i restarted it again. This time, my computer did not load the desktop or anything after the initial startup By initial startup i mean first the ping, grey screen with apple and loading gear, and then the loading bar on the next page. it does all this, and if im correct, it is now supposed to show me my dock/desktop and everything, which it does not, it is simply a blue screen which occasionally flashes.
I've tried restarting the PRAM, running a hardware test, and repairing the permissions. After repairing the permisions, the blue screen does not flash but rather has a loading gear which does not stop spinning.
What should i do? i have an appointment at the Genius bar, but im sure they are going to make me buy some stuff that wont actually work. Is there anyway to fix this without losing my memory?

Sometimes when I restart my machine running 10.5.8 my desktop background appears but my dock, top menu and desktop icons do not appear. If I force a shutdown and restart, everything comes up normally. This doesn't happen every time I restart, but it has started only recently. I've repaired permissions already.

6 month old MBP 15", been running 100% fine, plugged it into a projector the other day and it auto changed the screen resolution. I unplugged the device, went into settings and changed my screen resolution back to it's factory size as well as command & the minus key to make sure I wasn't zoomed in on anything.
I then did a system update for the following; Airport utility, Safari, Ricoh Printer, Digital Camera Raw, java, Itunes.
Restarted the computer as the updates had finished, then when turning back on the loading screen with the grey background, apple symbol and rotating loading symbol was zoomed in as much as the resolution would allow. So i restarted a couple more times, still the same thing - every time i turn the computer on the loading screen is massivly zoomed in, once it's done loading and moves to the log in screen it is fine.
I've tried plugging into the projecter again and editing my settings, that did nothing. It's like because i updated while the settings where wonky it's saved it somehow?

I recently bought the Areca 1880ix-16 card and the backplane cable to hook to the mac pro internal drives - hooked up 4 x seagate ST32000644NS 2TB enterprise drives for an internal RAID5 with 6TB of space. Used the DX4 from transinternational to hook up my 2 SSD drives. The initial raid build time was just about 2 days (!) for the raid 5. Shortly after that I left town for a few days and came back to an alarm in my computer - one of the disks had dropped out. The rebuild time was again close to 2 days!. At thipoint I realized that if I was sitting there with that much data at risk for a 2 day rebuild, it would be agonizing and so I needed to go raid6 (which had been my goal from the start, but only 4 internal disks is very limiting). So I gave up on managing my storage internally and bought an istorage pro it8SAS external box connected by miniSAS cable. The raid5 had to complete the rebuild before it would let me expand to raid6. I added another seagate ST32000644NS 2TB enterprise drive (interestingly the drive that was originally listed as failed has caused no further problems at all) and expanded the raid to RAID6 with the same capacity but one extra drive for parity. The rebuild now has been going on for almost 48 hours and it's at 53% I had NO idea the rebuild times would be this long. I do have 2.3TB of data on the array, so I'm not sure if that prolongs it vs. an empty array. But just for others info, take into consideration these times when deciding what your own needs are - I bought a high end (AFAIK) raid card, running in a high end computer (mac pro 3ghz octocore with 16GB RAM) and quality enterprise drives, and it's still maddeningly slow to rebuild. Hopefully once it's up and running, this will all be forgotten, and if I ever have a drive fail, I know I can still lose another one without any data loss. RAID6 seems the only way to go given these times for rebuild. FWIW, I also put in another 3 drives - old 500gb drives I had sitting around and built a secondary RAID5 array since I had the space, that completed in around 36 hours or so, and was done during the original raid5 rebuild.

I access my GMail account via POP with Apple's Mail client. The past couple of times I've tried to send an e-mail have resulted in an error message saying "The message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The connection to the server [URL] on port 25 timed out." I know I have my account set up right, as I've been using it like this for years. I went into GMail in Safari and could send a message fine.

I've been using my mac religiously on a daily basis for almost a year now. I have noticed that progressively the boot time and shut down time is getting longer and longer. And I understand as I install programs and use the laptop more, it's going to get slower and slower but right now the boot time and shut down time is more than I would expect.
For boot up, the only applications that open on login is Mail and Quicksilver.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the boot and shut down times?

I'm suspicious it's something to do with the power supply because after about 4 reboots where I hold the power button down until a horn beeps, it will start. It first only boots to white screen...reboot...comes up to white screen with Apple in middle...reboot...comes up to blue screen...reboot...boots fine and operates fine. I do notice that it reboots every once in awhile for no apparent reason.
