OS X :: Deleting Previous Systems Folder Secure?
Aug 21, 2010
I got some good advice about deleting dmg files so I thought I'd ask about the Previous Systems folder on the HD. I recently tried to delete too much and had to reboot from the disk. It put a folder named "Previous Systems" on the HD and its taking up 7.72 GB. I'm back up again and up to date. Everything seems to be working. I know I screwed up before so I'm asking here before I delete too much again.

I've just followed the "archive and install" procedure from my OS X Discs ( had a problem with the run preflight script that won't let me install a Midi driver) and have a "previous systems" folder with 14 Gb of space: can I safe delete this folder or files on it are recalled / referenced from the new OS install?

I think i Have secure deleting on, on my Mac OS X 10.5.7. It takes a good 10mins to delete like only 200 files (relatively small, like picture/music/document files).
I don't remember how I turned this future on, but how can I turn it off? Its really annoying how long it takes to delete something!!

I have a question about OSX 10.4.11 and secure deleting. My understanding is that even after secure delete has been used to erase a particular file, older fragments of that same file can remain on the hard drive. Assuming this also applies to secure deleting files from a mounted encrypted disc image (created using the disc utility), would I be correct in saying that even if file fragments remained, once the image is unmounted, those file fragments would be encrypted like everything else within the disc image. I guess what I'm really asking is whether, when one deletes a file from an encrypted disc image, that file data is moved outside of the encrypted data blocks into clean drive space. I don't see why this would be the case but was wondering whether anyone knew.
I appreciate one can always use the free space eraser within disc utility to "mop up" but I'm still interested about individual file deleting.
(Btw, this is my first post and as a courtesy, I did search the forums for this topic but didn't find anything. If I missed something in my search and this has already been answered, apologies!)

I have a Mac book pro that I gave to my boyfriend when I got the Macbook Air. We are trying to figure out how to set him up as a main user and not a guest without deleting all my information off the computer. Is it possible that he can use his Itunes account on it if mine is already established?

Going back to iMovie 6.0.4 was definitely the right thing to do. Adding Flip4Mac Pro solved all my file importing problems. Now, can I delete 8.0? Or does 6.0 share some files with it and will I have a problem if 8.0 is deleted? I also have to say that, the more I use my iMac, the better I like it. There are so many standard features in OSX Leopard that I am finding new tricks every day.

I have only a couple of gigs of space left on my hard drive of my otherwise perfectly fine imac. Looking on the drive I see two folders which combined take up around 80 gigs of space. One is titled "systems copy" and is dated from 5 years ago, and the other is called "Applications copy" and is similarly dated. These could be from when the machine had major repairs back in 2007, but as I didn't create them I'm not sure. I don't see these on my newer macbook drive, so I'm wondering whether they are necessary.

Firstly, I apologize for my English. I downloaded some icons for my folders and hopefully I replaced the boring ones with new! However, when I try to change an icon that I just pasted, I cannot. So, the new and nice road sign of a folder cannot be replaced from another icon, even if it is the default one.

I am using the Mail (5.2) app in OS 10.7. I have my Inbox sorted by decending date, i.e. newest mail at the top. When I delete a message, Mail currently selects the message above, i.e. the one that had arrived after the deleted one chronologically. Since I work through my emails from newest to latest (usually), I will already have seen the newer mesage. What I want to see is the next message on the list, i.e. the next one, which arrive before the deleted one. My question there is: How can I advance to the previous message rather than the next one (chronologically) after deleting a message?

I have a MacBook Air with 256 GB of SSD and am running very close to the limit of available memory. To recover additional memory I issued an empty trash command while holding down the options key. The process has been underway for a few hours now.Â
There are over 1,238,000 items to be deleted. Items are being deleted at the rate of about one every five seconds. At that rate it is going to take forever for the process to finish. Â
Is there any way to speed up the process? Or an alternative the empty trash command?Â

I was ripping a DVD last night and also surfing web and a couple other things all at same time (have 4gb memory) and the macbook crashed and was just stuck. It stayed that way for a long time, so I held down the power button and turned it off. After that, I couldn't get it to book back up. It would just stay stuck at the grey screen with the spinning wheel.
So I got out my original DVD disk and reinstalled. I do not remember how it worded it, but I did the option where it kept my previous system information. I now have Leopard installed again and I have a folder called "previous system" and I can view my old desktop files, applications, etc.

I purchased the latest MacBook Pro 17" in March 2012 in Australia. Because of "screen issues" I had to take my computer back to the Apple Store where they reinstalled Lion OS 10.7.3. Using Time Capsule I put retrieved all my information. However, I have noticed that my home folder has my married name when before it showed the name I am now using. My account name is correct, it is just the home folder name..I have been looking at other discussions but get lost on step 1 "log in as root."

I have recently purchased a second hand iMac.The Home folder is still in the name of the previous owner and I keep getting asked for his passwords. All his applications are still on there, so I would like to do a clean install and start again. Lion was already installed so I do not have any discs to re-install. How do I do that without any discs etc? Â

What are the reasons and solutions for the slow running of a Mac OS X System? I did an archive and reinstall a while ago to solve a drag and drop problem but since then the systems sometimes gives me what I have learn is referred to as the spinning wheel of death. I have also read somewhere else that there is a folder named the Previous Systems folder which is supposed to be where everything from the previous system (before the archive and reinstall) is stored. It was advised that this folder be thrashed to get a faster system and avoid hangs but I am a bit reluctant to touch anything that may cause further problems.

I recently check my 150 GB hard drive and noticed that I only have 10 GTB left. While going through my files to check what I don't need or want, I noticed that I have a folder called Previous Systems. Inside this folder are two other folders with dates for names. Each folder has approximately 20 GB for a total of 40 GB. Can I simply toss this folder? It does not seem to do anything. The folder must have been created from a backup some time ago. I don't recall doing that.

I have been using Macs for years, but I haven't got into particulars. Anyways, I wanted to know if I delete the contents of the Downloads folder, will it adversely affect the files that are actually stored in there. Meaning, will it delete them from other areas of my computer. I have random powerpoints, pictures, word documents, music, etc. in the downloads folder. It's reaching almost a 1000 files! I noticed that the music is in my iTunes music folder and some of the documents are stored in the documents folder.

I am using Image Capture 4.0 to download photos. When I plug in my storage device (camera, SD card, USB stick, etc.) Image Capture opens and along with the option to select the download folder, all the names of the folders (grayed out) I have used since I first started using the computer appear. These are folders I no longer use, but to get to the actual area or folder that I want to download to, I have to scroll past a couple hunderd previous, grayed out folder names. Once I get to the actual desired folder, I can download to it. But, those annoying, old folder names still appear on the hard drive.

I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP which has been driving me mad with near constant beach balls! I run no intensive programmes at all - just emails & surfing the net!
I originally used migration assistant from a Tiger MBP to this one & read that I may have corrupted Tiger P-Lists transferred over to my Leopard One. I would like to ask, how can I get rid of/delete my current preferences list to see if that fixes the problem - it did with another person who also transferred from Tiger to Leopard with Migration Assistant!
Will I lose anything by deleting the Preferences Folder/Files? I think I read somewhere that OS X automatically replaces them with current versions if that is correct? Ae Preference Lists taken care of too when deleting the folder/files?
I am a novice so please treat me like a 4 year old who needs very step by step instructions!

I want to know If I can delete items in my downloads folder. I HAVE DONE NOTHING specific to these files. The majority of them are files I opened as email attachments. NO, I haven't moved them or saved them. NO I haven't imported them to itunes. NO they aren't files ending in .dmg. Almost ALL are pdf. On another post regarding this question the chosen answer was, "you can delete from downloads folder without affecting the applications, so you CAN'T delete them without any problems". This statement is contradicting
Should it not have been worded, "YES you CAN delete without any problems"? And it didn't indicate if it included pdf files. ( i believe they were discussing copies of apps or programs in the downloads folder).Â
I just want to know what will happen to these pdf files. Do I need to move 229 files IF i want to preserve them somewhere on my Mac, or are they already saved elsewhere as a pdf?

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?

I have my itunes folder backed up from my iMac to my external HD. The whole "Music" folder was copied. I am trying to use that library on the external the main library since my iMac is gone. I have no music files on the Macbook (only had 20, deleted them), so I'm just trying to redirect iTunes to look at, and show the iTunes library in the iTunes music folder that I have backed up on the HD.
Ideally, I want it to copy over anything new I drag into it going forward so that everything's on the external. So I've read numerous articles on how to do what should be a simple task and it has proved anything but. I went into prefs. and changed the location of the iTunes library to the external folder of 'iTunes Music.' Then it pops up and says "do you want iTunes to rename the files in keeping with your "keep folders organized selection"? So I say yes, even though everything is already organized.
So it's not showing up yet, I restart iTunes, nothing. So I hit file, library, organize library. Then I hit consolidate files and "upgrade to itunes organization." Nothing. I restart iTunes, nothing. What is going on? I would like to be able to keep it updated on the external, and would like to do this with iPhoto as well. I know it's possible, but once again, it seems Apple is trying to make something that should be easy more difficult than it needs to be.

Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines inÂ
/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/Â Â
The instructions hereÂ

explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?Â
