OS X :: Couldn't Eject External, Now Disk Not Mounting?
Aug 15, 2009
I know this has been disccused ad nausium many places, but in reading 100s of posts Ive just confused myself and was hoping someone could help me make sense of all I've heard.I have a ibook g4 and use a WD 500gb external hard drive to keep all my music/pictures etc.Last night when I was moving files around (I dont think it was actually in the process of transferring files when this occurred, but there is a slight chance it was) I accidently hit enter instead of shift which told my computer to open all of the 1000+ folders that I had selected (DOH!) after working for an hour it seemed to be all frozen so with concern I turned the computer off and restarted.Suprise suprise, my external will no longer mount. - Disk Utility recognizes it but says there was an error on exit.Tim
Today I decided to change the HDD in my MBP. I read the manual prior to that so I was all set. It took me almost an hour to take the metal back off, it was a pain in the ass as I had one of those small japanese screwdrivers set with no proper grip. However when I disassembled everything, to my shocking discovery I came to those type of screes I rarely see. Those 4 screes on the side of the HDD (mounting screws). I could not take them out since I had no tool for that, Im not a native english speaker so I wanted to ask anyone how are those screws called and also the proper took size or name so I can buy it tomorrow.
I got the error, "The contents of this disk can't be changed. Mac OS X couldn't be installed on this disk."
I restarted, to boot from the startup disk, not the CD.
And now it just goes to the grey screen and shuts off.
Pressing "C" or "Opt - Command - P - R" or holding down the Power button for a while and then restarting, or trying "Command - V"..... none of it works.
The machine just goes to the grey screen, the wheel spins, and it turns off.
I've been having problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
I've noticed now that along with disk images not mounting for me anymore. My external drive images or DVD's won't eject either.
When I use right click with Mighty Mouse I don't even see an option anymore to eject that image. Is there any solution out there to fix this glitch? The work around I'm using is unmounting or ejecting images or disks from Disk Utility.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2 and am on an intel iMac.
I rarely use my superdrive, so I thought it might be more practical to have the button eject my external hard drive(s). Is there a way to do this through OS X or a third party app?
I want to erase the hard disk. Holding the Option key when restarting the macbook, and enter the Recovery HD, selecting the Disk Utility. Click the hard disk name, and select Erase tab. Click the Erase button, a message displayed: Disk Erase failed. Disk Erase failed with the error:Couldn't unmount disk.
I keep getting a pop up saying my start up disk is almost full, or that my iTunes library couldn't be saved, but I've still got a quarter of hard drive available on my new iMac. OmniDiskSweeper shows that most of the memory goes to my iTunes Media and Pictures/videos, but that shows just 61GB of hard drive used for Users. What could be using my hard drive space that doesn't show in OmniDiskSweeper?
Tonight i was working on a report in MS Office 08, and it was all fine and what not until one point i got some error message saying that the disk was full and i couldnt save it and to change the saving location. Anything this is on the main drive where i have ~40gb's left. So i put my USB Drive in to save it on that and it gave me the same error it wouldnt save on anything it just keep saying Disk Full.. Does anyone know what that is? Clearly its some sort of error/bug as i restarted the macbook and downloaded a picture and saved it on my desktop with no problems after the reboot. Im running mac osx 10.5.6
I just got a new MacBook Pro at work, and it is running Lion 10.7.2. So far, the system will not mount any disk images, although all programs are also brand new. Neither .iso nor .dmg works. The warning message I receive each time says "Warning: The following disk images couldn't be opened ... Reason: not recognized"Â Disk Utility is also unable to mount the files.Â
I am having this problem with disk images (no matter if they are .dmgs or isos or whatever) in a Lion 10.7.3 fully updated iMac: when openning one of these from the desktop or a Finder window, the disk utility helper starts opening and checking the image, and then it gets to a point where a window opens as a result with the message "image could not be opened, file system not allowed" (or so, I'm translating the message from Spanish).Â
And after that, no image I ever click even shows even theprogress dialog. Just nothing happens. I still see the process in Activity Monitor, and force quitting it allows the helper to work again, but I never get a .dmg to open up (so I cannot install anything...). The same images work perfectly in other computers and systems..
I have a mid-2009 13" MBP (2.26, 4 gigs, 1TB HDD, SL 10.6.4) and the SD card reader is not recognizing any of my SD cards (won't mount and also not seen in Disk Utility). The cards are recognized when using a USB adaptor, and also work fine in my wife's MBP SD card reader, so I know it's not the cards. System Profiler recognizes the internal card reader on my system.
I've tried resetting the SMC and reformatting the cards but nothing has worked so far.
EDIT: The SD card reader isn't working under OSX or in Windows, btw.
I've just transferred my data to a new computer and now need to erase the hard drive on my old one.. I've tried Disk Utility, increased the security, and tried 'erase' but I keep getting an error message "couldn't unmount disk". I've gone into Partitions and tried deleting the HD there as well but I get the same message. I just want to get the computer securely wiped and would like to keep Lion as the operating system.Â
I have an annoying problem; I have 2 x 1TB Seagate daisy chained and then connected by FW800 to my iMac.
When I do a fresh boot up (in the morning usually), the hard drives don't automatically mount, I have to take the FW plug out and put it back in again.
I have a 2.4 Ghz MacBook that i bought last summer, and a 250 GB Western Digital external hard drive (powered by computer) that i also bought last summer.
My problem is that My computer will not recognize the hard drive at all. it doesn't show up anywhere, and after attempting to reconnect it over and over, it will eventually pop up, and then disappear, saying that it was improperly ejected.
I am using a macbook pro with 10.5.8, and have an external hd (freecom 320gb). I have used it for around a year and it is almost full. The other day, after attaching it to a pc - when i now attach it to the mac, it does not mount, and the warning 'this disk is not recognised' etc comes up. It shows in disk utility, but does not allow me to verify/mount it. I'm guessing the pc has reformatted it or something
What can I do?! I have looked into data rescue software, but I'm not sure - the information cannot just disappear? and I just want the drive to have the same architecture, as all my music etc was organised in particular folders.
I have a WD Mybook Studio, 500gb which I normally hook up via Firewire or USB to my Intel Macbook, 10.4, no problems. But that macbook's unavailable for the next week or so, so I dragged out my old Powerbook G3 laptop, running 10.2.8. Which can't seem to see the Mybook drive - hooked up via USB 1.0 cable. The drive is formatted HFS+, split into 4 partitions.
The My book drive hooks up fine and functions perfectly connected via USB (1.0) to my even older Mac 8600 tower!
The Mybook drive shows up in the System Profiler, and in Disk Utility. But the partitions are greyed out, and I cannot mount them. I ran disk utility on the mybook, and all drives verified ok.
I ran disk utility on the powerbook's boot HD as well - more than once, with repeated errors.
I know a little bit more than zip about terminal commands - I'm hoping this is something I can fix fairly easily, because all my data's on the mybook, and it would be nice to be able to have easy access to it this week..
It's a weird problem ,I got a iomega external drive usb3/2 compatible on my iMac white, Intel Core2 Duo 2.12 It's quite nw and always worked well. I have 2 partitions
1. iPhoto Library and music (mac partition, just mac)
2. Time Machine Backup
Since a while I got Time Machine errors but I didn't bother too much, now I discovered that the drive is visible but not mounted.
Investigated a bit with no results mounted on another macbook works just fine and all my stuff is there. The drive has additional cable for power (never used) I connected it without good result. Started in recovery partition and ... all my backup is there and visible and recoverable Seems however that backup stopped when I was on 10.7.3 I think 10.7.4 might be the cause but I don't know how to solve the issue and would avoid to restore via time machine and then get stuck again with 10.7.4
I have my iTunes library hanging off an AEBS and if I start iTunes before mounting the disk on the AEBS, iTunes doesn't know where the library is and often reverts back to a default library location of user/music/itunes/itunesmusic. Is there any way to get this drive to mount automatically? Either through OS X or iTunes?
G5 iMac model A1058, 1.8/512mb/160gb.Bought this machine used on e-bay with no operating system, powers on fine, flashing folder with question mark= no operating system. Tried to connect to my i-book in target disk mode via fire wire and the hard drive does not mount on the desktop. Can't find it in disk utilities however i get this in system profiler under firewire.
I purchased a used external, ac powered zip250 drive that's not mounting on my MacBook with the USB. I need it to transfer files from my old G4. Or is it just a dud drive?
My Macbook Pro 2.4 got force restarted a few times because it was locking up (a friend's faulty external drive I was trying to fix). It was running fine, then when I tried to connect my own external drives they wouldn't mount anymore and I got this error: /system/..../IOStorageFamily.kext was installed improperly.
I came here and read up on common solutions. I have: - Ran Disk utility repair and repair permissions - Followed this article: [URL] - In verbose and single user mode all I get is the dreaded "waiting for root device" over and over. They all have not worked so far. However in safe mode it actually boots. It seems to me that some drivers were perhaps corrupted when I turned it off abruptly and now it has trouble mounting any drive. What are my options at this point?
I recently purchased a WD My Book Studio 1TB to use as back-up drive, using Time Machine.
After my iMac (Intel 2007 - Leopard) wakes from "Sleep Mode", the WD My Book is always dismounted so, unable to perform the Back-up ? I have to manually mount the drive before manually performing the back-up.
How can I keep my WD HardDrive mounted at all time, even after Sleep mode, so the Time Machine Editor automatic weekly back-up works ? Interface is FW800.
