OS X :: Continuously Running Out Of Space On IMac HD
Jul 8, 2009
For about a year now, I have been continuously losing space on my HD. I have long ago stopped downloading anything bigger than occasional jpg's or iTunes songs/podcasts, and I am constantly purging my computer of things b/c the space just keeps running out. Frankly, my estimate is that it should be at about 20 - 30 GB. It's at 500 MB, and after leaving it on for several hours, it will often chew up the virtual memory, drop to ZERO KB, and I restart to regain the 500 MB I had. This process cannot continue.
I ran a command on Terminal (something a guy on another forum site posted), and here's the results:
313M /.Spotlight-V100
12K /.svn
0B /.Trashes
512B /.vol
14G /Applications
1.0K /automount
6.6M /bin
0B /cores
512B /dev
160K /Developer
58G /Library
512B /Network
883M /private
4.4M /sbin
1.8G /System
71G /Users
602M /usr
24K /Volumes
147G /
iMots-iMac
Of "users", it's just me, though there is a Library folder under the 'MacIntosh HD' heading, and also a Library folder under my user heading as well. Somewhere in my Mac is stored like 30 GB+ of stuff I don't need, but I don't have the knowledge to know what I can dump and what I can't dump. I also accidentally created another account for myself by accident years ago, but never used it, and it uses up negligible space.

My Macbook Pro (from mid-2010) has recently started running EXTREMELY slowly, and the fan continuously runs loudly. From other posts, I have checked my activity monitor to see if any process is taking up a lot of the CPU % and have found that nothing seems high, except the kernel_task which, from what I understand, is supposed to be high. I have also attempted to reset the SMC which didn't fix the problem either. I have taken my computer to the genius bar 3 times now, and they keep telling me nothing is wrong (because it works perfectly there), but when I get it home the fan comes back on, and everything runs slowly.

My iMac has currently 40 GB out of 500GB left.
I have a 500GB external drive that has my Time Machine backup on.
What options do I have?
Most of my data is music & films. In Finder I like the way I can click Movies and there they all are.
My only option I can think of is to use my external drive as a place to put more films etc. Then buy a 1TB external drive and then somehow get Time Machine to backup both disks.
Would I lose the ability in Finder to click Movies and it show all Movies? I assume so because it can't look at 2 discs to find a folder I guess.
Are there any other options available?

Ever since I upgraded to Lion (and doubled my RAM) it seems like my 2009 Macbook's motor ( for lack of a better term)Â seems to run and run until I put it to sleep. Is it all coincidental? I make sure it is vented. Doesn't seem to make a difference. And of course my Apple Care just expired.

I have a users machine that the fans wont stop running at high speed Its a 2011 MBA 13" i5 128gb ssd I installed a few fan monitors and fan controllers, they all say the fan is at 0rpm. Apple is not my first language; but Im warming up?I have performed an SMC reset as well as the P&R? reset?  Both went through properly, the SMC i could see the power cord light change colors, and the other reset performed before the chime would make the chime, black screen, rebooted. Alot of what I read on this topic consists of the machines fans ramping up because they are being used, or if its a fluke the SMC will reset it. I havnt been able to find anything in regards to the computer reporting 0% and just running non stop.

But as soon as I switch on any of the windows PC on the both sides, the modem gets crazy and the whole line gets unstable.
Like the internet starts going on and off continuously.
I dont understand, what is the reason.

I have a iMac G5 (PPC chip) running OS 10.5.8 (256 GB HD). Hooked up to the computer is a Time Machine wireless router/backup drive (500GB). The computer HD is currently using 112 GB and the Time Machine has backed up 310 GB.Â
The problem is that every hour the Time Machine starts backing up and doesn't finish for anywhere from 35 to 45 minutes, then starts again the next hour. This is getting to the point where system performance is getting very slow. Even if there has been very little activity, the backup happens and the computer slows to a crawl Is this normal? I would hope that minor changes created during an hour would result in a very quick backup, but evidently this is not the case.

Recently, every time I open Adobe Reader, or click on a PDF document on file to open it, Reader starts opening all PDF documents on file continuously until I get a message saying there are too many open documents to open any more. The only way out appears to be use of force quit. Have I picked up some kind of virus, or is there just a setting that I need to change?

I have an older macbook pro runnig OSX 10.7.3.
120GB hard drive.
I have deleted content so that I have about 45GB of stuff I want to keep. My current user folder size is about 90GB.I have read the other posts on disks running out of space and none of that applies.
However, after poking around for ages, I found the following:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub
is occupying over 34GB of space.
The content of the folder is a list of hex folder names (guessing an index) and each folder contains one photo Can I delete this?

My wife's 128GB MBA is running out of space so we are trying to identify the culprits by using the marvelous Daisy Disk.Â
Her user account is taking up 43 GB (mainly music and photos) but the total for the HD is 103 GB. Does that sound right - that the system and other stuff (although not sure what that would be) takes up 60GB?Â

So I'm trying to find a way to hide the SpaceSuit icon in the doc while it's still running. The main reason is that I use the command+W to close my applications and sometimes SpaceSuit gets closed accidentally in the process. I added:
<key>LSUIElement</key>
<string>0</string>
right above
</dict>
and tried dockless, but I've came up short.

On my Macbook Pro (Tiger) I suddenly got an error message about running out of space on the start up disc (woking on a word 2008 document). Checking suggested I had only 124MB left.
A couple of days earlier I had 60gb free. Deleting a few gb of programs reduced the space to zero!
I couldn't work out were the space was being used but as most programs were now refusing to work. I just shut down.
On switching back on, the HD space had come back and I had my 60gb of free space back.
whether its a sign of a problem I should try and sort out, or is it just "one of those things".

I have a Macbook running Leopard and an iMac running Tiger. I am looking to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard and Tiger to Leopard. If I were to purchase Snow Leopard and install it on the Macbook, would I then be able to use the copy of Leopard that came with the Macbook on the iMac? I am not trying to use 2 copies of the same thing on different machines, I just want to put a new os on one machine and move the existing one to another.I am reluctant to purchase the Mac Box Set version of Snow Leopard for the iMac because I do not want or need iLife and iWork.

I had a bunch of photos stored on my digital camera that I wanted to upload onto my computer. Only I had a little under 2 GB of free space on my startup disk, which was not going to be enough, so I uploaded them to an iPhoto library I created on my external hard drive. The free space that Finder recognized on my startup disk dropped to around 1 GB during the time it took to upload the 1300 or so photos onto the external drive, which was slightly surprising in that it's never taken so short a time, but I restarted my computer and it went back to recognizing the right amount of free space, like it always has after restarting. Everything was working just as I expected.
However, when I edited about 1000 of those photos in iPhoto, somehow this ate up almost all of the hard drive space on my LAPTOP, not my external drive, and restarting my computer did absolutely no good. I am literally running on 13 MB of free space as I type this.
The photos are definitely in my external iPhoto library, not on my startup disk. I searched my startup for "IMG" (my camera names photos "img_###" to see if for some reason iPhoto was copying the pictures I edited to my laptop, but none of these new pictures came up. I even went into the files I'd accessed yesterday (it's past midnight here) to see if I could figure it out, but all the photos I clicked on were on the external disk. That iPhoto is copying the pictures I edit somewhere is the only possible solution I can think of. But whatever it is that is taking up all my free space, I can't find it.
Meanwhile, and similarly inexplicably, the copy of Cocktail I have downloaded is telling me that I am currently using only 71% of my available disk space, which uh, has basically never been true ... Cocktail has always told me that I'm using something depressing (yet accurate) like 93% of my available disk space.

My mac is slow. Obvious points are covered. Maximum RAM installed; All apple software updates downloaded and permissions repaired after each download.Activity Monitor shows no obvious 'hogs'.Hard Drive (250GB) has almost 50GB free I am considering some sort of clean up using something like ONYX but feel that the hardware /software package should be almost self maintaining.15 years using Macs, since OS5 but not minded to look under the hood very often, since that is what brought me to Apple in the first place.Â

System Spec: Late 09 21" 3.06, GeForce 9400, 4gb ramCurrently I have itunes and safari running, if i enable the visualizer my imac is noticeably slower, especially when browsing the internet.I thought it might be the fact I was running a second 1080p display from the 9400 would have caused the slow down. But the same thing occurred after i disconnected it. After repairing permissions and restarting, pmram etc.Is the 9400 causing the slowdown? I know its fairly old but itunes visualizer and safari should be quite basic tasks. Its not the end of the world i know but does the 27" imac have similar issues as i plan to upgrade my machine in 2011.

I have an aluminium iMac, 2.4GHz Intel C2D, 2GB RAM, running Leopard. On one account, it runs slowly, with a noticeable delay in doing anything, even menus take a second do to anything once they've been clicked. It has all the updates installed and I've tried repairing the permissions and rebooting already.
Since I've only noticed it on one account, I'm inclined to think it's a corrupted user file or something.

I was playing around with the iMac's at my Apple store a couple of days ago and found that, even on the 27", the 16:9 ratio really irritates me because it feels like I have *less* screen space. Of course that's not true, but because there's now more space on the sides and less from top to bottom, it feels more "squashed" to me - 16:10 was the perfect ratio to me, because it's the perfect balance of space across the whole screen. Am I alone here? Or has anybody bought a new iMac, not liked the ratio at first but gotten used to it? I'm curious...
