Sep 2, 2014My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.Â
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac. Â
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).Â
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?Â

Mar 21, 2012Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.Â

Dec 11, 2009whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

Intel based i Mac  secttion of this fourm It appears out of space on the HD .can upgrade the HD If so what steps i must take to do so and how much bigger external must buy if  1 tb HD verse a 3 TB and will to buy the external HD before reach over 500gb of used space on the back up I now have.

OS X :: IMac Running Out Of Disk Space?
Nov 7, 2010My iMac has currently 40 GB out of 500GB left.
I have a 500GB external drive that has my Time Machine backup on.
What options do I have?
Most of my data is music & films. In Finder I like the way I can click Movies and there they all are.
My only option I can think of is to use my external drive as a place to put more films etc. Then buy a 1TB external drive and then somehow get Time Machine to backup both disks.
Would I lose the ability in Finder to click Movies and it show all Movies? I assume so because it can't look at 2 discs to find a folder I guess.
Are there any other options available?

May 30, 2012I am using Parallels to run Windows 7 and am getting disk space errors. I think it only gave me 64 GB of disk space when I set it up. I'm not sure how to increase the disk space allocated to the Windows side of the machine. Dec 2, 2009I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband.
Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

Dec 11, 2014I am unable to move files from a 250 GB backup hard drive to a 1.0 TB b/c I keep getting the warning that isn’t enough space. Get Info says that 999.72 GB on it are in use. But the 1.0 TB was almost empty. If I add up the space of each of the 3 or 4 items on it, I get less than 20GB. What’s taking up the other 979 GB?For background, I now have iMac backed up with LaCie 2Big NAS system. The 250 GB is primarily to hold iPhoto Library and backup copies of original photos. the 250 GB is full. So I am trying to switch over from 250 to the 1.0 TB for photos. Moved a few smaller files over, but then could move no more. Thought of running disk utility to erase the 1.0 TB, but now I can’t move the few files on it back to 250 GB, but of error message that it too is full.I did run Repair Disk on 1.0TB before started trying to move files.
