I have downloaded an icon i want to apply to a file and i have it in png, icns and ico format. When i click on the image in the get info window and paste in the file, it just shows the default .png/.icons/.ico image. How can i make it work properly, showing the actual image itself.
View 2 RepliesOn my Macbook, running Leopard, I recently changed all my icons. (applications, folders, default files, etc.) I changed the Finder and Trash icons via System/Library/CoreServices. But the Dock won't recognize that the Finder icon has changed-- it's still showing me the old icon. That's Problem 1.
Then I created a new user account, and discovered that on that account the Dock shows the correct Finder image. But Problem 2: the new account doesn't recognize my default file icons. It flashes them for a second when I save the file, and then reverts back to the regular white default image. (Even though all the .icns files are correct in the application's Resources folder.) I really don't want to download Candybar or anything, since I know it can be done without that.
Tried a search but not be lucky so hoping someone out there has solved this one before.....
Been trying to change some of the default icons Apple provide with third party .icns files by opening the folder info window in finder by using the 'get info' command, then clicking the icon in the top left hand corner (so it is has the tiny blue halo) and then edit-paste in the new icon. Sometimes it works (have changed some successfully) but now when I try, instead of the pasted icon displaying the icon image, I get the generic or default icon image for an icns icon displayed, see the screen grab attachment for what I mean
Can anyone advise me as to whats not working correctly?
A quick question. On the far left side of the dock, what is the default icon that is there? For some reason I seen mine go up in a cloud and I can't remember what it is. Right now I have "Finder, Dashboard etc...

When I go into the finder and hit "Programs" the folder opens but no icons are shown, If I hit it a second time (via left menu in window) they are shown roght away.
First off, I've searched the forums, but can't find an answer -- sorry if I missed something.Just got a new machine running 10.6.3 -- ugh, the dock and folders and so on look like clunky Windows junk :-(I miss my simple, elegant 10.4.11 dock ...I don't want to add novelty icons or that kind of thing, I just want a borderless dock that's semi-transparent or clear. With the new iTunes 9.2.1(5), I seem to have trouble sorting some of my video files. Every video file (converted from .avi to .mp4 with Handbrake, using the "Universal Apple" preset) I throw at iTunes seem to be added to the Movies section. I tried updating the metadata from Get Info, filling out the Video tab with appropriate names, season number, episode number and episode ID. That didn't get anywhere. I tried putting "TV Shows" as a genre but that doesn't do anything either. I even tried making a new folder in the iTunes folder, naming it "TV Shows" and throwing videos in there.

I changed the account preferences (in the System Preferences) so that the username is pointed to Data/users/username
The Finder icon in the dock still opens to to Programs/users/username, even after rebooting. All other apps appear to be using Data/users/username for saving files and other stuff.
How do I change the Finder on the Dock to open to Data/users/username?
For reasons that I will not go into here, I have a first initial and middle name, not a first name and middle initial like most people. It played havoc with the registrar at my college. My Address Book card has my first name as "G" and my middle name as "Ralph". Whenever programs automatically fill in my name, they use my first initial only. For example, Pages puts my author name as "G Kuntz". Is there any way to get my default name to be "G Ralph Kuntz", other than setting my first name to "G Ralph" and my middle name to blank ("")?

I figured out how to change the name so each time it comes up it has the unique name but the icon would be awesome. I tried "Get Info" but no help. I have 3 folder icons next to the trash icon. They are my downloads Documents and an other folder I use very often. Now these icons I have dragged and dropped in the dock. But the problem is they all 3 look the same. I get confused which one to take. How can I change the icons on those folder.

Is there a way to kill the white border that Snow Leopard puts around new image icons? They show up on the Desktop and in Finder windows. Also, now all new raw icons show as generic icons in the dock pop ups. And don't get me started on dumping prefs in Image Capture to set it to open images after download.

We are starting to accumulate quite a few icons and they all look the same (an @ sign) and we have to read what is written underneath which is time consuming. Just wondering if there is a way to add a different photo to the icon?

When I compose a message in mail and drag an images into the mail it just shows up as an icon. So I can't see the image in the mail. I relized today that when I send the mail and the recipient opens tha mail the image is just displayed really really small..  I've tried to setup a new user on the same machine and when I compose a mail with that user drag and drop works beautifully and the images shows in the mail just as it should.I’ve tried: defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing 1 (and I tried setting it to 0 as well) but no difference. I’m running 10.10.1 and mail 8.1.  Anyway I can solve this or a work-around would be great that doesn't involve migrating to the test account.. Can I either reset the mailsettings, or copy any .plist that hold the mail.app settings from the test account (where it works as it should)?Â

Where are all the default system icons? like the applications "a" (not the folder with the a). if you plug in an ipod it automatically gets the right icon (shuffle has shuffle icon, etc.) are those on the ipod or system? where to find those icons? i know how to change them, but can't find the defaults...
