OS X :: Cannot Mount External RAID - Partitions Locked

May 25, 2009

I'm having a problem with my external RAID that I use between my G4 Laptop (10.5.x) and G4 tower (10.4.x). I downgraded the G4 laptop to 10.4.x so I can run Classic (kids educational software), and gain some speed. I backed everything up to my external RAID (two HD's RAID together). The downgrade install onto the laptop went perfectly. I went to restore some files from the RAID backup, and I got this error when trying to mount the external RAID: "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer".

I just ignored the error and did not touch the RAID. I then re-connected the RAID to my G4 tower that had previously mounted successfully, and same error: "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer". This time I started Disk Utility, and it sees the RAID and it's volume set, but it is "Locked" (see attached pics). I think I need to first mount it to change any "access control list" or permissions, but I can't figure out how to mount, and then change permissions/ACL.

Mac Pro :: Raid 0 And 1 Across 2 Disks / 4 Partitions

Sep 27, 2008

So, please welcome me back. After 15 years (I had Mac Plus, LC and Quadra 650), I am back from the darkside. Bought myself a Mac Pro today. Yeah - I probably should have waited for nehalem, but my PC was getting flaky. Time for the every 9 month wipe/reload and I just didn't want to go through that again, so I jumped. Tomorrow I am moving drives into the MP. My questions is specifically about partitioning and Raid. I typically partition my drives about 1/2 way down the middle and give the 1st partition to high performance needs and leave the second for infrequent use of backups and storage.

Lets assume I have two WD6400AAKS (I have three actually). Ideally, I'd like to partition them like this:
WD1 Partition 1A (200GB) Partition 1B (400GB)
WD2 Partition 2A (200GB) Partition 2B (400GB)

Then (using Soft Raid)
- Config partition 1A and 2A as Raid 0 Striped (giving me 400GB high performance)
- And config partition 1B and 2B as Raid 1 Mirrored (giving me 400GB redundant backup)

(Yes - of course I don't want to access the mirrored drives when expecting high performance from the striped drives). I assume that once the drives are partitioned, the Soft Raid will simply see them as four different drives allowing me to configure them as described. But before dropping a few hours into this, I thought I'd let all you raid/hard drive experts give your opinion.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Unlock A Locked Folder On External Drive When Locked Checkbox Greyed Out

Jun 26, 2012

I use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos.  The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it.  I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section.  In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".

OS X :: Recovering A RAID Drive That Won't Mount?

Oct 8, 2009

I recently bought a Lacie 2big Raid drive with 2 x 1 TB drives for backup of my images (I'm a photographer).

Everything was fine, mounted the drive, formatted, and used SilverKeeper to transfer all my previous work onto the drive which was formatted with RAID 1 (mirrored).

The files all seemed to transfer across fine, size was the same, and I had a quick flick through the drive and images where all ok. So needing to use the drive that these images CAME off, I formatted that, and put that to use where it was needed.

So in summary I had the Lacie RAID 1 as my 2 sources of backup at this point. I thought everything was fine at this point.

Now maybe a few months on when I have to track back for files, I noticed quite a few folders had been corrupted, for example, opening a job folder, and every type of image file, jpeg's, tiffs, and PSD's would all say they are corrupt when I tried to open them in Photoshop. Some of these jobs where 20GB of RAW and edited images, all corrupt.

So, reading through my manual for the Lacie, it said I could remove the 2nd drive, without altering the 1st drives data.

With this I removed the second drive, trying to narrow out any problems with the RAID. Mounted the disc, same corrupt files.

I then replaced the second drive back to the RAID, which the instructions said was fine, and it would just rebuilt the mirror, so I left if for a few hours while it rebuilt the second drive.

Now my problem, the RAID has finished mirroring the drives, and now my MacPro or Powerbook won't let me mount the drive without formatting it which I obviously can't do, It brings up Disk Utility when the drive is switched on and wants me to format the drive to mount it.

Software :: DMG Of Linux RAID Will Not Mount

Feb 20, 2010

I had a 1 TB Western Digital MyBook World (first edition with the blue rings) that failed. I was able to take apart the drive and get it spinning again by placing it in the freezer. Unfortunately, it would not mount using a USB adapter or the NAS enclosure it came with. I was finally able to get Data Rescue 3 to see it using the USB adapter. At that point, I used the software to make a clone to a DMG on a new drive. Apparently, the drive was originally a Linux RAID (without mirrors), and that's what the DMG is.

So, there are four volumes under the one DMG. I think I need only the fourth one though. Unfortunately, I cannot get the DMG to mount. I've tried DiskImageMouter, Disk Utilities, Burn, and Springy. Every single one of them tells me that there's no mountable system. Disk Utilities can see the DMG and its four volumes. I have also tried to mount it in Linux (Ubuntu) via Parallels Desktop. Is there anything I can do to salvage my files, preferably with the same folder structure. So far, I can still access the drive itself through the USB adapter, if that helps any.

Mac Pro :: Mirroring 3 HDs With 5 Partitions Onto One External?

I regularly run software update. As I can remember, it has ever shown two partitions. I don't know whether this is related to software updating or not. If it is 'yes', how can I solve it?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Partitioning An External 500 GB USB HDD (NTFS) In Two Partitions?

Jun 16, 2012

I realized Mac OS X 10.7.4 will only read NTFS partitions (can't write to it). I could install a third party driver or use FAT32. I decided to split the external Seagate HDD into two partitions (NTFS and Mac OS Extended FS).

I went to Mac OS X's Disk Utility, but there was no way to partition the current single 500 GB NTFS partition with my existing data. It seems like I have to erase it with my data, and then partition into two. Is that how it supposed to work? This was on a new Mac Mini with all updates.

OS X Mavericks :: External Drive Partitions Inside Themselves?

I use a 250GB external HD for most of my working files. It has five equal partitions. In one of the partitions--Cedar Mill (see attached images) --another partition (CM News) shows up in Finder. Inside CM News is another copy of itself ad infinitum...

I am reluctant to delete them without knowing what I'm doing. How they got this way.

I haven't noticed any particular problems, except possibly slow search times for opening/finding files...

OS X :: Changing Partitions - Time Machine Will Be Reinstall If I Change My Partitions?

Mar 7, 2010

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage. So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

Hardware :: Using External Hard Drive Partitions And Formats?

Jan 27, 2009

I've just ordered a Seagate 500gb portable hard drive. I want it for backing up my 250gb Macbook, storing films and also for exchanging files between computers (Mac and Windows).

After reading various posts on the forums I'm planning on making 3 partitions:

1) 300gb for time machine backup. Mac OS X Extended (Is this the same format as HFS+ just a different name?)

2) 15gb for exchanging files. FAT32

3) The remainder for storing films. Mac OS X Extended.

Have i got these formats correct and are they suitable?

Also, i read that FAT32 is fragile and data can get wiped off it. If this did happen to the FAT32 partition, would it jsut affect that partition or could it damage data in all the partitions?

OS X :: External Hard Drive/Partitions/Time Machine

Jan 11, 2010

I have still another EHD/TM question and I can't quite figure out where to ask for the help I need.
I have a Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 with 2 internal drives and a large EHD that I was using solely for Time Machine Back Up. After a recent conversation with tech support at Apple, I've decided that I should have still one more full copy of stuff that is critical to me--my original photographs. I currently only have the backup copy on TM.

So, I want to take my large LaCie EHD and partition it. I want to store things as follows:
1. Internal HD #1-primary HD containing all data except original photos
2. Internal HD #2-HD that contains nothing but original photos
3. EHD (LaCie):
a. Partition #1: Second copy of original photos
b. Partition #2: Time Machine back up of HD #1 and HD #2.

It seems as if it is easy enough to do the partition but I'm wondering if there is a way to get my original photos to go into both HD #2 and Partition #1 of the EHD at the same time that I import them via a card reader.

If not, I'm wondering how I can set this up so that I don't have to remember to copy the photos from HD #2 to the EHD. Do I have to use another back up program? If so, any recommendations? Will using another program mess up Time Machine? What am I not thinking about?

MacBook Pro :: How To Rename External Hard Drive With Two Partitions

Jun 6, 2012

I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.

OS X :: RAID 1 Set Using Only Two External HDDs

Apr 8, 2010

After doing some research today I still have a few basic questions about RAID arrays that I was hoping someone could answer.

1) Could I form a RAID 1 set using only two external HDDs, of the exact same capacity, make and model, and a MacBook with OS 10.5? That is, would I only need to connect the laptop to the external HDD enclosures, and the enclosures to each other, with the relevant cables and the software would do the rest?

2) I kept coming across the warning that a RAID array is redundancy and NOT a backup system. This seems simple enough: a file deleted accidentally on the source drive is deleted on the RAID array. So would I be right in saying that a RAID array along with a system running, say Carbon Copy Cloner with its archival backup, would provide both backup and redundancy?

OS X :: External HD Won't Mount

Nov 13, 2008

I recently Installed Windowns on my MBP via boot camp and I also installed a MacDrive 5 day trial version so I could move some files from the external (1Tb WD My book pro) to the windows side. Everything went smoothly and then after my file transfers on the windows side, then in a hurry I just unplugged the firewire cable and shut the mac down. Now when I start up in OS X the drive doesn't mount. I starts up ok and then the only thing I see is a task called "fsck_hfs" eating up my CPU and memory. The drive works fine in windows with Macdrive so it's not a HD failure because all of my files are still there and usable, It's jut that Leopard can't see the darn thing. So how could I get Leopard to see the HD again without re-formating and losing all my files on it?

Mac Pro :: External RAID Compatible With Vista And OS X?

Sep 11, 2010

Looking for some specific but simple advice on buying a raid. If you could teach or share your thoughts, but fair warning I am not a tech and get easily confused. But seriously, port multipliers, pci card bottle necks, quad eSata ports, enclosures with raid and esata interface, pci-x? raid and port multipliers, hardware/software raids? What cables go where.

My specific needs and specs:
I am looking for a fast drive configuration for use with my Intel 2008 macPro (Haprertown) OS: osx and windows vista.
Needs to be compatible with both operating platforms.
External solution please, the raid will be used with one box and will not need to be shared with other computers.
Used for Video editing and high-resolution image sequence playback.
I am looking to reach up to 300mbs if I have the budget, but that speed requirement might be too expensive for me, I am not sure?
No redundancy or security required, everything is non critical.
I will only need to run Raid 0
I do not want to do internal storage.
To help with cost, I can get away with 250-500gigs, as space is not necessary. Think, speed, speed, speed.
Price, Can I do this for $450?

The homework I have done thus far:
The SSD drives are perfect for me but the price point is a little pricy when I can do similar speeds for less cash. Unfortunately I have ruled out SSDs. I think I am going the way of an eSata raid, just don't know how to configure something close to 300mbs? Do I do a pci raid card? Do I build a raid and buy a card? External, High speed Raid 0, no redundancy,(300mbs). Low storage capacity (to drive down cost for me if it is relevant?) Compatible with my Intel mac pro OSX Harpertown dual quad. Disk solution can be formatted to be used for either OS (vista or osx).
