OS X :: Attempting To Restore From External HDD
Sep 3, 2009
So my fathers iMac was going downhill. It wouldn't start up, but I was able to get it up doing a disk repair. Knowing that wouldn't last, I did a full system restore using the Western Digital Button Manager software that was on his machine.
Now the HDD is offically dead, and was replaced by Apple Care. When I got the machine back, they had kindly upgraded the machine to Leopard...but now their restore software is pretty much useless to restore to a Leopard install.
Is there a way to restore Western Digital's back up methods with out their software? (Namely iPhoto. I can manually move most of the documents and such, but what about the iPhoto library?)
If not, should I downgrade, then restore...and then upgrade again? (Snow Leopard is waiting for it.)

I located the time stamped backup, selected my hard drive, then did "RESTORE".The first thing that happened was a message that it was preparing to copy to 'volumes'It got to about 3823 items when I got the error code 8003. I wanted to restore my entire iMAC to that stamped date-time.

I've had an external 1.5TB MyBook for around five years now and recently decided to backup/replace it with a 2.0TB MyBook. However I'm having a lot of trouble finding a simple, painless way to copy all my files from one to the other. The hard drive is simply an external host for my iTunes library, which contains nearly 140,000 files. Initially I tried copying the entirety of my Music folder over, but for some reason it hit a hang at 96.58GB/947.06GB and has never progressed. I then attempted to do smaller transfers and got about 1/4 of the way through my library doing so, but I've experienced more hangs along the way.
Can't cancel the copy operation once they occur, so they just sit there on my screen. I attempted to restart my computer but Finder won't allow me to shut down without first canceling the copy processes. All of the guides I have found on the internet, including the Apple website, seem to indicate that this is the only way to do things, which is beginning to really frustrate me since it also seems to be a method that doesn't work very well; in fact, it seems to succeed mostly by random chance. Is there something I could do to ensure this doesn't keep happening, preferably so that I could go back to my original idea of copying the entire folder over at once?

Rather than empty the trash which now contains all the data on my external drive I ejected the external drive immediately. When I ejected the WD external hard drive the trash bin no longer displayed any trash inside of it, and when I re-connected the external drive the "trash" (contents of my external drive) appears again in the trash. Is there a way to break the connection which has formed between my data on the external drive, and my trash bin? I was simply trying to eject my external drive as I've done hundreds of times by dragging the icon to the trash/eject area. I don't want to risk losing the data. I restored my computer, and upgraded to Mavericks.

I have had Time Machine configured to back up my photos and videos on an external drive. My Time Machine backup is a separate drive attached to my MacBook by FireWire. I have Leopard OS. I have in the past successfully retrieved deleted photos from the Time Machine backups using iPhoto.
Now, unfortunately, the external drive with the photos and videos has developed a problem (possibly power-related) so that my MacBook no longer recognizes that drive. Obviously, this means that iPhoto can't find/open that photo library. Which means that iPhoto can't access the backup via Time Machine. The photos must surely be on the Time Machine backup but I can't figure out any way to retrieve them.

I backed up my nearly 90GB iPhoto Library both through Time Machine on an external HD, and manually on another external HD. Upon erasing everything on my MacBook internal HD and reinstalling Tiger, I wanted to restore my iPhoto Library on the Mac internal HD from either of of my 2 external HDs. Now the iPhoto Libray contain around 19,500 photos. When I try to open iPhot and pressing shift and select the iPhoto Libray from either of the two external HD the process of import understandably takes a long time. THE PROBLEMÂ is why iPhoto shows it is importing over 90,000 photos and takes for ever to do it and then it keeps telling me there might be no space on my internal HD (which has 340GB available and the iPhoto Library is only about90 or 95GB)?Â

I have a problem when I attempt to change icons. I know the method of using "Get Info", copy, paste is standard, but recently when I hit "Get Info" for the icon I want to use it only gives me the the file type icon, such as PNG, rather than the icon that I want to use. I know it's tough to explain so I can take a screen cap if you don't quite understand. I tried using CandyBar but even then it wouldn't give me the option to change the icons I wanted to, which are only the MS Office icons (Nothing fancy.)

1 broken mac, screen dead - may be able to access the hard drive, but with migration assistant I don't see (literally) how I can. Or can I? 1 External Hard drive, with what appears to be the entire contents of the old mac on it. I can't seem to find the applications I need to restore to new mac, and the Address book won't update, even when I trash the one on new computer, and load the old one. iBook G4 - both models same. word new when speaking of these macs not taken literally, I'm guessing 2004 models.

I just got an imac and love it so far. Have been a pc user (and still am) and have a western digital external drive with crazy info on it that I got running on my mac without having to format it to fat32.
Everything was working perfect up till last night and now I can't access any of the contents on the drive.
It seems that everything is there as the drive only shows 62GB of 500GB free but the folder is empty.
I tried to run a disk repair using disk utility on my mac but everything is grayed out. I also tried to run a disk check on my pc but windows cant seem to access the drive without wanting to format it first.

I have recently upgraded my computer. My external hard drive, a LaCie 320GB, is full of stuff that I want to get rid of. Can't delete it. Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu. Â
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.Â

I just discovered that even though external drives can be backed up with Time Machine, Time Machine won't let you restore files from them if they fail. You can only restore files from a secondary drive if that drive is mounted, which is impossible if that drive has failed.

I'm running OS 10.5.2 on a MacBook Pro and I've been having the following intermittent issue:Wen I attempt to launch an application. Either from a shortcut in the Dock, or by double clicking on a file associated with that application, or by double clicking on the application icon in my Applications folder I get the following error message. The application ?App Name? cannot be launched.-10810
It doesn't always happen and it isn't always with the same application(s). I've had it happen with everything from TextEdit to Dreamweaver CS3.

I've restored my Mac OS x (10.6.8) from a time machine backup after reformatting the iMac's hard drive. After restoring all my files the external drive that time machine uses is locked and I cannot seem to get it to unlock itself. I've tried resetting the permissions on the "get info" panel without any success (Did a restart after every change- it just seems to go back to custom priviledges). I've also toggled the "Ignore Ownership" toggle on and off- again followed by a restart each time.Â
The external drive is connected by Firewire 800 and is a RAID 1 configuration using two 2Tb drives.I don't want to lose my existing time machine files on that external disc- hense formatting it is out of the question..Â

I recently purchased a Patriot 16GB RAM upgrade (yes, spare me the Apple "Limited to 8GB" speech), and a new Seagate Hybrid drive because I'm out of space on my old one. I installed the 16GB RAM in my MBPro 15" (Early 2011...running 10.7.3) with no issue last night, and it was running fine and quite zippy. After Time-Machining, I replaced the hard drive today, and tried to boot from a backup Lion disc (to format the new HDD and restore from Time-Machine) to no avail. Then, when I switched to a Snow Leopard disc, I started to receive 3 Beeps...the infamous RAM beeps. I figured that the RAM that I was sent was bad, so I switched to my previous OWC 8GB set to the same result. The issue I'm having is that I took the Snow Leopard disc out, replaced the new hard drive with my old one, and viola everything is working perfectly. I'm even posting this on the same computer.Â
