OS X :: Apple Remote Desktop - ARD Box In Sharing Preference Of Machines

Feb 4, 2010

I've just started to use ARD and have it installed on my Admin computer running 10.6.2. I'm aiming to control macs on different OS'. I seem to be able to work ok with machines running tiger but leopard and panther aren't working correctly.

I'm not sure if its because I need to create a new account on the machines to use in conjunction with ARD, I've seen this done before in apple tutorial videos. Does anyone know if this is the best way to implement the system or can I check the ARD box in the sharing preference of my machines?

Applications :: Using Apple Remote Desktop / Screen Sharing

May 15, 2009

I am trying to set up Apple Remote Desktop and Screen Sharing between my Mac Pro (home computer) and a new Macbook (white laptop).

I wish to be able to use Apple Remote Desktop from both computers. I have had this working between an older work laptop.

I don't seem to be able to connect to the Macbook from the Mac Pro, I cannot share the screen or connect using ARD. I enter the username and password of the account I use on the Macbook but connection takes a while and is then refused. I can however, connect from my MacBook to my Mac Pro

If I allow Screen Sharing instead of Remote Management from the System preferences, it requires that the the user of the Macbook accepts my request to view the screen. However if using the Macbook I can connect and no permission is requested. If permission is granted I can only share screen in ARD and not control.

The user account I use on the Macbook is an "Admin, Managed, Mobile" account. Would that have an affect?

Any word on a newer version of Apple Remote Desktop? I'm really looking for a new version that fixes some of the outstanding bugs in version 3.2. Applications :: Using Apple Remote Desktop CD?

Jul 1, 2010

This is gonna sound crazy, but last weekend I found a Apple Remote Desktop 3 (still in shrink wrap) in a parking lot. I don't really know anything about it. I have not opened it. It is Apple Part #: MC172Z/A, Version 3.3. It has a "unlimited managed systems" sticker on the front. Is this the complete software, or is there more that goes with it? I have done some research and just got more confused about 'administrator and client' software. Just wondering what I have here without opening it.

OS X :: How To Regain Control From Another's Apple Remote Desktop

Apr 14, 2009

I'm taking a computer class in high school. The teacher's computer has Apple Remote Desktop to control any computer when necessary.

The problem is, the class helper has access to this computer and usually takes control of my computer and mess up with my computer project "as a joke". My only workaround to pull the Ethernet cord from my eMac before he does so; if you do it after, the computer stops responding until after a while when the cord is back in. This is usually when the helper leaves the computer; I assume he has to give me back control of my computer before I can use it.

Applications :: Using Apple Remote Desktop Shortcuts?

May 9, 2009

I am a network administrator for an environment that has both windows and mac systems. I personally use a MacBook Pro for all of my admin duties. With Microsoft's RDC I can save the connection to each machine as a file and drag the folder containing those files into the dock to create a stack for quick access. My question is, is there any way I can do something similar for the Mac connections for Apple Remote Desktop, so I don't have to launch the app, then go to the machine I want to connect to?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Apple Remote Desktop Suitability

May 23, 2012

My grandmother has hearing impairment and macular degeneration, but has learnt to use her mac (with zoom) to remain in contact with all her family and friends. However she does not live close to anyone who can help her when little problems arise, and I was wondering how simple remote desktop would be for me to use to sort out little problems? It would mainly be to fix little issues such as reconnecting them to their wifi, changing browser settings (appearance of bookmarks etc) and also to allow us to better see the problems she is describing. We are both running OS Lion, however my grandpa has recently started learing on his own refurbished mac running snow leopard so it would be great if I can remotely access both.

Also how easy is it to set up? I'm assuming we'd need someone at their end to get things connected initially which could be arranged, but none of us are mac experts just yet (I've just bought my first ever mac).

Mac Pro :: Least CPU Usage- Real Monitor Or Apple Remote Desktop

May 18, 2012

What would require the least processing power of a Mac Pro; a 24 inch monitor run via a DVI cable or the same image accessed via Apple Remote Desktop software and displaying the screen on another Mac? Here is the rest of the story.I am designing a home video surveillance system built around a Mac Pro and SecuritySpy. It will coordinate 12 network cameras (HD quality) and the potential load of the cameras alone will be huge. My goal is to place the Mac Pro in a locked network closet and administer it remotely. I can either go the Apple Remote Desktop route or have the monitor signal sent via an ethernet adapter, but the aim is to tax the CPU the least. So, what are your thoughts?Technological change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.(Albert Einstein, 1941),

Final Cut Pro X :: Sharing Library On Two Machines / Two Hard Drives?

Sep 3, 2014

On Final Cut Pro 7, I would have my computer with an external hard drive with footage and I would edit on that. I would then email the small project file to a co-editor who would pick up where I left off. It was a very fast baton pass because he had his own computer with a clone of my external hard drive with the footage. We would pass the baton back and forth all the time.

I am trying to figure out how I can do this in Final Cut Pro X. I understand you can transfer/copy the library, but that would involve copying 100s of GBs at a time. Possibly TBs. And please note that I'm not just looking to copy sequences alone (or "projects" as they're now called in FCP X). In FCP7, the project file would contain all organization, labeling, tagging, etc of all clips, as well as all sequences.

Is there a way two pass the baton in the way I am looking for? This is imperative to my workflow.

OS X :: Can't Change Vnc Address In Screen Sharing Preference

Dec 9, 2009

I'm trying to redo the ridiculous naming system for our Macs in our office. I've changed the Computer name to "MP-01" and the local hostname to "MP-01.local" correctly. However when selecting the screen sharing option, i get the following:

Screen Sharing: On

Other users can access your computer at [URL] or browse for MP-01.

The domain is our personal domain and that looks fine. But the employee name that precedes it, I can't find where to change that. The weird thing is it wasn't the name of the Computer before I changed it, nor is it an employee that has ever used this machine.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Get Migration Assistant To Successfully Migrate Between Two Desktop Machines

Jun 30, 2014

I spent 4 days trying to get OS X Migration Assistant to successfully migrate between two desktop machines, both running Mavericks 10.9.3.

The two machines were connected by an ethernet cable, and all migrations would fail after 16-24 hours, with the progress bar stalling out at "Less than one minute remaining".

Before every failed transfer, Migration Assistant would inaccurately show "157 KB selected" for transfer if the "Computer & Network Settings" option was checked, or "0 KB selected" for transfer if only the "Applications" or "Documents & Data" options were checked.

I finally realized that the migrations were failing because I was opening and clicking through Migration Assistant on both the source and target machines at around the same time.

The eventual solution was to open Migration Assistant on the source machine first, and click through as far as I could until the source machine was actively looking for other machines on the network.

As long as I waited until then to open Migration Assistant on the target machine, it would correctly calculate the size of the files to be transferred and the migration would succeed.

So, the order in which you open Migration Assistant seems to make a big difference: source first, then target.

My problem is solved, but only after several days of hassle, so I wanted to post this in case other people had a similar issue.

(I tried many suggested fixes that did not work, included reinstalling OS X on the target machine, running disk repair and fixing permissions on both source and target, changing file sharing on the source machine to include the whole drive, trying to migrate Applications and Documents & Data separately, turning off wifi before the transfer, etc.)

OS X :: Best Option For Remote Screen Sharing?

Mar 2, 2010

I am trying to figure out what the best option is for remote controlling my computer. I've used LogMeIn Free, which is a great option, and I really like that I can use any web browser from any computer, and even my iPhone to remotely control my primary desktop computer.

I've also used Mac's built in ScreenSharing.app to access my various computers using the Back To My Mac, which is also a great option.

I guess I would just like to find out if any better options exist. I do not like that the Mac's built in ScreenSharing.app doesn't permit me to view my remote desktop "Full Screen".

I do not like that LogMeIn seems like little more than a PC ported application made to work with a Mac as an after thought.

Mac Mini :: Sharing Over Remote Disc (macbook)?

Apr 12, 2012

I have a Mac Mini (2011) and a MacBook (2006) I want to use my Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 CD on to my Mini using the Remote Disc option. I put the CD into my MacBook and click all the options and follow the instructions from the Apple Support 'MacBook Air, Mac Mini: How to use Remote Disc to share DVDs or CDs from a Mac or Windows-based computer' When I click Remote Disc on my Mini the MacBook shows up and when I click on that, the CD shows up but I can't open or copy the CD onto my Mini. I keep getting an error message which makes no sense.

Incase it was my MacBook (2006) running Leopard was the problem and it being to far behind my Mac Mini running Lion I used my mums Windows Dell Laptop which runs Windows 7 and again, followed the instructions. Same thing, same error message, which I was expecting because I know how Mac hates to open .exe files.

I don't know what to do to solve the problem, can it be solved? Is my MacBook and CDs just to old to copy and install on my Mac Mini, would a MacBook Pro 2010 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 solve the problem? I'd like to know before I save up and splash out any money. The error message says something like it's not supported even though we downloaded the updates the support thing suggested doing if we needed too and something about it can't read it because it's not there or you need to have it installed previously, well how could I have installed the on the Mini if CD it never had a CD drive, where else would I have got the programme from, I haven't found a downloadable version of Office Word or I'd have done that already, by the way, if you know where a full programme download is available?
