New to mac, I have a new macbook pro and till yesterday when I wanted to change the volume of the music on the mac, I simply press 1 key. Now, I can only change the volume pressing Fn + the volume up key. The question is: how can i change between the key assignments ? Like.. if I'm listening music I want to access pressing one key, but when I'm working I would like to have the dashboard on that key. I want to put volume up but the dashboard appears.
I use the midi learn feature in logic pro, and it works well. But then I turn off the computer and midi controller and when I open logic again, it does not remember what it had learned.
I never have thought about purchasing one of these as I figured they were just for photoshop which I do not use. Boy was I wrong.I saw one in best buy when picking up the new U2 cd last week, and thought I'd look at them online when I got home just out of interest. I am currently a sophomore studying engineering and find myself using tons of notebooks and paper for notes and homework. They usually get somewhat disorganized, I do keep subjects separate and homework separated by subject as well, but I have been looking for a better way of taking notes, a different way. I kept thinking that taking them on the computer would be so much better, if i needed to go further on the page couldnt I just scroll over and add something in? Zoom out to see the entire thing? Add notes to something where if I was using a notebook I'd just have to use another page or squeeze something in where I'd get totally confused.
So I looked at this online and realized that a tablet can be used for many other things. I purchased the Wacom Bamboo, i didnt need to extra software in the bamboo fun and I thought the Bamboo looked better, so I got it as Amazon.com and had it sent. I got it today and have had a ton of fun with it. First things first, I can use it as a mouse. It works really well although not quite as fast (yet) but with the 4 customizable buttons at the top for spaces and expose and turning on/off ink plus the scroll thing, its like a combo mouse/keyboard. I can write and it'll recognize my handwriting (apple's Ink software does, then inserts it into whereever the curser is in any program) although my handwriting is horrid. I do have to slow down for it to be read correctly. The two buttons on the pen can be used for right clicking and the other is for spaces. What a great alternative to the mouse.
Secondly, I am looking for an alternative for notetaking/homework assignments.Since Im in engineering I take classes that require doodles of pictures and math equations and such, which are impossible to do on the computer. I downloaded inkBook and have been trying it out. I can set the page to be fullscreen and i can add pages as I go. I can choose pencil/pen/highlighter/brush for my input, can change colors, and a cool feature of the tablet is that I can push harder and the lines get darker, or pull up and they get lighter. This is neat for having to draw reference lines that need to be there but distinguished from the rest. I really would like something that can organize all my notes in one location though, instead of having to open a new file each class. Something like evernote would be great, but the tablet function does not work (yet?) on the mac software.
So far it is great. I'm not sure if It will replace note taking for me this semester, but I may use it for homework assignments or re-writing notes just to get used to it and get a process down to possibly use starting in the fall semester as a complete replacement of a notbook (or mostly complete at least). inkBook is a nice piece of software, I'm not sure if it is the note taking software I'll end up purchasing. I have evernote but the mac client does not recognize tablet input from what I could tell using the program and reading the forums (if this is wrong please correct me and show me how to do this). I would really like to use something like evernote because of the syncing and separate notebooks to be used for different classes and such. I also tried microsoft word in notebook view, and it recognizes the tablet. The only thing is it is limited in how large a page will get. I still think i'll leave it as an option though as I already have purchased it.
If anyone has a better note-taking and organizing software let me know, It just has to have support for this tablet. All in all, a great $60 spent. My sister does work with pictures and some graphics so she may buy one of these after she sees it. If anything, I'm just doing my part to keep the economy going; afterall, it is a consumer economy and we have to buy things for it to work right? Well I had some spending money from work so I got this and a new lacrosse stick. Two completely justifiable purchases. Now I just need about $2500 so I can get a spiffy new macbook pro to speed up final cut. I'd love to put that $2500 into the economy if I had it.
Q1: how can I delay printing? This was possible in OS9.
I have a thermal printer wich permits me to change the ribbon (Black, CMY, CMYK). If I have a mixed type of files to print, I'd put on hold (in the "print" window) the files that requires the unloaded ribbon while waiting for the other to print.
Of course, I can print all the CMYK, wait until it's done then print the B/W ones but I don't find it practical. Or I can also rush to the print center and hope to have the time to suspend manualy the ones that need it.
Q2: Once a printer is created, how can I change the associated ppd? This also was possible with OS9.
Q3: It is possible to change the printer name once it is created?
I've been changing the permissions on some of my folders and files in my normal user account so they can be accessed and changed by another account. Problem is, I have a program that saves new files into a particular folder. When it saves the new file, the permissions are the default, meaning I have to change them myself in order to make them writeable by the new account. So my first question is - is there a way to make my first user account always save files with a set of permissions that I specify?
My next question is - what should these permissions be? Both of the accounts are admin accounts. Should I therefore set group to be 'admin' and give rwx permissions to the group? Or is it possible to set owner to 'admin'? Can a file be owned by a group? Looking forward to your answers! This UNIX stuff is fun!
Hello all, was just reading the BBC news site and came across this article about BIOS being reflaced by UEFI- was wondering if any tech savvy folk might know a little more about how it might affect mac boot times? Sounds a major leap from what I could glean
I've changed my airport express name, but iTunes still displays the old airport express name on the Airtunes (Airplay) list. I couldn't find a way to fix it.
Just wondering if you guys had a solution to safari auto-filling forms on websites with my old address - its quite annoying to have to delete all the old data to put my new address details in. Is there somewhere in the settings I can enter my new details and have them auto-fill?
Just bought my mac this saturday so I'm still getting used to not having a pc. In the screen saver option, I was wondering if there's anyway to change the speed by which the pictures change one after each other, and if I choose to have the picture on my desktop background change every 30 seconds how bad will that hurt my battery?
On the Get Info tab of my Applications folder I changed the permissions so that I have all the read and write rights of the whole folder. The it somehow changed to Name: system, and the Privilege: Read and Write. I didn't know that I was NEVER supposed to do that until I googled the issue. I googled a lot, and most of the solutions says that I need my mac DVD. I am currently in North Africa visiting my parents, and my Disks are back home. I tried many things, but the more I try, the more I seem to mess up my macbook. I have a macbook white with Mac OS X 10.5.8. Some suggest to go to Terminal, and use chown -R, but as soon as I open Terminal, i get the following:
------- login: PAM Error (line 400): System error login: Could not determine audit condition
[Process exited - exit code 1] -------
I tried many suggestions, namely: "http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=804099&highlight=application+folder+-permissions But I can't use Terminal.......................
I changed my apple id and I cannot find where to change it on my iMac for iCloud. I visit System Preferences < iCloud. But it's asking me for my password to my old apple ID and it doesn't give me the option to update my apple id.
I am buying PowerBooks for students here in Brazil. They all have some level of OSX 10.4 but are in English. I need to change the base language to Portuguese. Is there a way to do this without the original install disks?
I may have one or two systems with OSX 10,5, so the same question applies there.
Is there a way to replace Aqua/Quartz as the default bootup desktop environment and instead start X with a window manager of my choice? I made an .xinitrc but not sure how to stop Aqua/Quartz from starting at bootup and replace it with X and my window manager.
what's the easiest way to change your admin name and password if you're not going to reinstall OS X?
I imagine I could figure this out pretty quickly, but I have been without a mac for a little while now and I'm going to purchase a 12" PB tomorrow that doesn't come with the install discs. I don't want to be trying to figure it out during the sale.
Whenever I go into the change your wallpaper and screensaver tool, I can change my screensaver, but I cannot change my wallpaper. I click any folder, or any wallpaper and the tool closes/
For some weird reason, whenever I install a new program, or when I open iChat, my buddy in my address book comes up as the "install name" or on top of the iChat window where MY name should be...How do I change this...?
I have searched quite a bit and I've read many different answers so I'm beginning to doubt if any are actually doable and if it is there is no easy answer. I have an antique Mac G4 PPC Dual 1.25 with 2 gb of ram and I have updated all of my hard drives internally as well as externally to SATA/ESATA and one usb 2 smaller drive so that leaves me with one small (160 gb ATA for OS 10.4.11 and along with another partition with OS 9 on it along with all of my apps on it.
I'm a British guy currently living in Germany, I would like to change my IP address to a British IP so i can watch English TV over the internet, as it won't let you unless your in the UK. My girlfriend also lives in Germany she uses software called Hide My IP on Windows, with the software she can just pick the location of her IP! The problem is its only a Windows application!
This morning when i turned on my Mac, i noticed that the F5 and F6 key was not working (higher and lower brightness of keyboard) so i went to System Preferences>Keyboard&Mouse and i clicked 'Restore Default' thinking this would restore the old settings of F5 and F6. I then noticed i had accidentally changed all old keyboard shortcuts from F1 to F12, I wanna find out how to change my keyboard settings back to F8 for 'Play/Pause' F11 for volume decrease, F12 for volume increase etc.
I just bought a new MBP 15" from the refurb store. im loving it so far.
But one thing is really ticking me off, big time. There are F keys for Expose (F3) and for Dashboard (F4) but none for spaces!
First, i don't use Dashboard at ALLLL, expose I will use sometimes... but i can just swipe down on the trackpad.
I Went into keyboard shortcuts and made Spaces pop up by pressing F3, but it requires me to press fn+F3 to bring up spaces.
There has gotttttta be a way to change this? On my old mpb I Was so used to just pressing F12 (the only open F key to bring up spaces) but on this one, there is not one "open" F key.
I just reeeeally want to be able to press F3 and F3 only to bring up spaces, U use spaces like 20 times more than expose, and it's really bugging me pressing fn+F3 everytime, when the function of the F3 key alone can easily be accomplished by a downward swipe with all 4 hands on the keyboard.
Or is there a way I can change the 4 finger swipe to bring up spaces instead!
If I simply have to keep pressing fn+F3 I might just live with it, but there has GOTTA be a way to get around this.
