Now that Macs are starting to come with 64-bit kernal enabled by default (new 2010 Mac Pro, Mac Mini Server) how does that affect running applications that need Rosetta, such as MS Office 2004?
View 3 RepliesOn my MacBookPro, 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1.5 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.11, all rosetta emulated applications as Apple Works 6, Toast 6, Microsoft Office 2004, PhotoshopElements 3 and so on, suddenly have stopped working. A short flash of the program symbols ist all I get when I try starting one of them. Everything has been fine for the last three years!Before that, I noticed that I could not install the Security Update 2008-007 Intel, no matter if by software update or manually (for the download version I get only an error notice that the checksum failed, when I try to activate the .dmg). Other Apple software updates were installed without any problems.How can I repair or reinstall Rosetta (obviously has to do with that, or not?) without a complete reinstall of Mac OS X 10.4.???

However recently I saw some random text saying that it will work but Rosetta must be installed with 10.6 - I thought Rosetta was just a natural part of the OS 10.5 and is 'just there'- now it is an option? ???
First question does 10.6 support really support Rosetta?
Second question: does anyone know how this will be installed on a fresh 10.6 install (going to buy a New HD just for this install in Sept)?

Over the last week I've had 2 of what I have now discovered are called "kernal panics". I've had this SR 2.2 for about a year and a half. I had one prior to installing SL last week 1 this week after installing SL. Other than the "You must restart your computer" message following the crash I've not noticed any other problems. I have not installed any RAM or other hardware. I've pasted the kernal panic report with the hope that someone might be able to help decipher what it means and what the issue might be.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter the WWDC keynote where Apple officially put PPC out to pasture, I began wondering what they would do about PPC software and applications. Specifically, if Apple is now officially supporting only Intel machines with 10.6, would it abandon Rosetta as well, thus requiring all 10.6 users to abandon apps that are not universal binary/Intel only apps?
This becomes an issue for a significant segment of the user base (including me) who still use MS Office for Mac 2004 and do not want to upgrade to 2008 for a variety of reasons including use of macros, VBA, cost, UI preference, etc. If Apple abandons Rosetta, I either have to upgrade to Office 2008 or I cannot install 10.6.
is there a way to check out if my apps need Rosetta?
With the upcoming release of Snow Leopard I'd like to be sure I still need Rosetta before upgrading my machines.

I've written recently about my kernal panics on my imac g5 I reinstalled the original software and moved on to Tiger and it says "cannot install this on this computer" I have installed it before, it is my software bought free and clear. I don't know what to do. My son's college papers are due and we cannot get on the sites because our flash/etc. is not updated. I am now at 10.3.9 (I go to "about this mac", more info, and my system overview app will bounce on my tool bar and not come up.) I dont know what's going on. My hardware tests all came out clean.

I just ran software update on my 1 yearold imac, it showed 4 things needing updated so i clicked download and install as usuall but when my computer restarted to install the updates it said there was an unexpected error before it finished installing and gave me an option to restart which i choose to do, but now it keeps showing Â

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use Rosetta Stone v2 in my macbook laptop. This software requires that the language cd be inserted in the optical drive. Without the cd inserted if will not work (anti piracy?) . My macbook optical drive recently broke. It ejects everything that is inserted. Question: Is there to install the language files in the macbook (disk image?) so that Rosetta Stone thinks that the cd is inserted? I tried to copy the files into a flash drive but got a dialog box saying that some files could not by copied. I rarely use the optical drive and don't want to repair/replace it just for this program.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Final Cut Pro v5.1.4 on my intel MacBook Pro but when I clicked on the mpkg file to install I was given a message telling me that Rosetta needs to be installed to open the Final Cut Pro.mpkg file.
I downloaded and installed Rosetta then Final Cut Pro v5.1.4. What is bugging me is that if Final Cut Pro v5.1.4 is now intel supported why did it ask me to install Rosetta to open the Final Cut Pro.mpkg file? When I use Final Cut Pro v5.1.4 does it still run under PPC emulation through Rosetta even though I have read that it is now intel supported?
I would buy the Final Cut Studio 7 but I am a bit short of cash at the moment and was needing videos edited for a friend.
I am having serious issues with my Apple PowerPC G5.. Its the 2.5 Dual Processor version of early 2005 running os x 10.5.8, i have installed; 2x500gb hds along with 4.5gb of ram... Ok now heres the problem, yesterday i came across an app called "CHUD" this apparantly was developed to help speed up an OS X system, so i downlaoded and began to install the parts to the app suite, after installing 1 or 2 of the CHUD apps i came to Reggie SE, i doubled clicked on the install then my G5 decided to freeze, completley! I tried Force Quit and nothing happended, the system would not respond what so ever, so i left it for 30mins or so to see if it would figure itself out and it didnt so i had no alternative but to cut the power and reboot....
Now, after reboot, my G5 will boot up to the User login dialogue, once i enter my password the dialogue accepts my password and dissapears (astho it is logging into my account) but then the screen turns Blue and the system returns to the Username & Password dialogue box..... Also the fans within my system begin to speed up and dont stop for a while, almost sounds like my G5 Tower is about to take off!
I am pretty sure I have just maxed out the space for start up. I can't get past the message box that pops up and says you need to shut down your computer in 4 languages. I so hope this isn't the logic board.
I tried restarting and holding down command option p r and command option n o and unplugging the power cord from the back and plugging it in as I press the start up button. then release the start up button and press again. I cant get past to free up the space or use disk utility. Do I start it from the start up disk holding down the c key and do a reinstall?
I often watch things on my MBP from the internet, I had been using greasemonkey and thought that it was the script causing this panic, but just today it happened and greasemonkey was not enabled. what does this kernal mean>?

I've searched, but I haven't found any info on a situation like mine. I have a 2.5ghz Quad Core G5, it is outfitted with 4 gigs of ram and 2 500gb HD's. Everything was purchased in December of 2005. Over the last 8 months or I have been getting random Kernal Panics. Sometimes the machine will be sitting unused for hours and then I'll come back to it and it's locked up. Other times do not seem to have any pattern, it can be with multiple programs open, just safari, or FCP. The machine always starts right back up with no problems and typically continues to operate for hours or days before reoccurring.
I did the hardware check, and everything tested good. I switched to blutooth keyboard and mouse, and have disconnected all USB devices.I don't seen any signs of leakage.I am pretty much to the point that I assume the logicboard is bad. But I don't really know how to confirm this.
Being that the machine always starts back up and never has problems consistently I really don't know what to think. I wish it could be solved with replacing the ram and/or hard drives. But I just don't know how to determine the actual problem. All I have read is a lot of speculation.
I have recently bought an iBook G3 indigo clamshell off ebay.It came with os 9 and os x Tiger , but alot of the time when i start up tiger it goes into kernal panic and i have to restart where it panics again :/ what could it be? and how could i fix it?

The major Applications I would like to run are MacWrite Pro & Microsoft Works Vers. #4.0c. My old Power Mac was running OS 9.1 I have the original install Floppies for MacWrite & Microsoft Works. (they would have to be copied unto a CD for me to be able to install them on my Intel Mac. (no floppy drive on the Intel Mac)
Assuming I could get copies of the old Applications on a CD & then install them on my Intel Mac would they run under Rosetta & be able to open my old Data files? I am definitely not well informed about the capabilities of Rosetta. I installed Rosetta on my Intel Mac when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
