Questions for long time Mac Users.
1. Once 10.6.1 is released, will I be able to use the CD's I rec'd today and then proceed with update via the software update routine.
2. Should I expect to wait weeks or months?
What would be an ideal diagnostics/ system check up to run? I have Tool Tech Deluxe, Drive Genius 2, and Onyx.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had my new refurb MBA (2.13/128SSD) for 2 days. I really love it!!! The battery charged up pretty fast the first day. This evening is the first time that I'm using the MBA for any length of time on battery power and it's going well. I've had it on for over 2 hours and it shows 2:45 battery time left.

Now I know there are about a dozen apps that do this, but can you give me some recommendations? I want 'the best' if there's even such a thing.
Paid or free, I don't care ... as long as I don't have to wipe my entire system.
We're running an airport extreme as our router. About once every day or every other day, the internet connection drops, but the router is still functioning fine (can connect to the router) and is visible via airport utility. We can't connect to the internet, whether via a wired or wireless connection. In order to get the internet back up, I need to so a restart on the airport utility. This seems odd, but this is the second airport extreme in a row that we've bought that has this problem (the other one lasted two months).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a G5 iMac - 2.1 ghz, 20", 250gb hd and 3gb ram, but it has been having problems starting up and it is also going to sleep midway through a task or at random times totally unprompted.
It now almost never starts up first time (I keep the iMac mains power lead always connected and the mains electricity supply turned on at all times now)- sometimes I will get the 'Start-up Chime' and then the cooling fans start spinning very loudly and then after a few seconds the iMac stops the start-up routine, but often when I try to start-up I don't even get the 'Start-up Chime' and I have to leave it for some time before trying again.
I can also now only get the iMac to run as a Firewire Target Disc by starting up with the T key held down and then using an old G4 (400mhz) Powerbook Titanium as the screen/keyboard by using the iMac HD as the startup disc for the Powerbook but this is obviously just a temporary work around.
I have also tried backing up all my data, and reinstalling the Mac OS X onto the iMac but the iMac still will not start-up normal and I still have to use it just as a Firewire HD.
Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it's not, at least the iTunes bit. I am using cover flo and I know that's supposed to increase the RAM usage but I don't even have the window open (it's in another space.) I've been seeing this high amount of RAM usage lately so I ran techtool deluxe and there was an error with the volume structure. I repaired permissions from the OS X install disk and since then the volume structure test passes but I'm still getting the unusually high numbers.

I recently downloaded Fan Control and it shows my left fan at 2000rpm which is normal but my right fan is -1rpm. Is that normal?

View 10 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if this is normal? Almost 30gb of VM in use? I'm encoding one of my DVDs and Handbrake is only using about 90mb of real memory while a bunch of background apps are using about 600-800mb of VM memory. Yesterday I encoded a DVD in like 20 minutes. I did a restart to refresh my memory but it's taken like over 2 hours of encoding and it's not done yet.

As per title, I am noticing the 'beach ball' quite a lot and have just restarted the computer with the new safari software update. I was told to installed this iStat program by a friend although i'm not quite sure as to what is acceptable and whats not.

/Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes/ to get a look at what is going on, like in Activity Monitor in Windows.
I opened up the Processor Palette and did some basic tasks like going over the Dock, opening Dashboard, etc and found that, at time, those basic tasks used 50% of my processing power! Also the Time Machine GUI used 90%
How can I reclaim some of this power?
I read on www.mactricksandtips.com that I should use a normal acc instead of an admin acc. What do you think?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro 2,1 and have been having some problems with it for some time. At first I suspected file system damage, so I backed up important data, and did an erase and install, and just reinstalled Final Cut Studio, leaving the backup on an external. But I am still getting some of the same problems, one hard drive will take up to 30 minutes to mount, it can't be backed up (carbon copy cloner fails saying either bad filesystem or bad drive, and just copy and pasting fails). Sometimes, using the Find command in Finder will not return any results. I am on Tiger 10.4.11, all the latest patches.

I noticed that the RAM indicator went from 4 GIGS of RAM to 940MB of RAM. I'm freaking out b/c this a brand new computer. Is there a solution to bring the RAM back to normal?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMaybe its the 64 bit kernel but I just timed my computer starting up and it took 1:08.91 seconds. It used to start in 37 seconds (with my old and dying hard drive) I'm really not too bummed because my apps and everything load really fast. I just kind of wonder why it is taking so long to start. A old XP machine at my friends with a 1.81 Processer 256MB vram and 2GB ram starts in 45 seconds. I know sometimes start up times change but this is kind of long.

I noticed that when the machine is off, but connected to an ungrounded (or shared with other devices) electric outlet, the whole case gets electrified and power leaks to it. If one's touching it the machine and making direct contact with the floor, it gives small-pulsing-continuous electric shocks.

Is that normal? My computer never used to be this hot. I can't even hear the fans running.

At startup, the PowerPoint files on my desktop have the normal PowerPoint icon...but after a few seconds, that normal icon is replaced by a plain gray box. The same is true for all of my MS Office applications and icons. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files all have the same gray-box icon, making it harder to identify them by sight. How do I get the normal application icons to stay visible? I'm running Mac OS 10.6.4
View 1 Replies View RelatedFrom the time I bought my new Macbook in Mid-February, it gets hot over small stuff.... and starts getting way hot when i start playing any game like CivilisationV, Sims3 etc.Sometimes its CPU temperature reaches ~93 degrees Celsius and Fan Speen reaches 6500 rpm according to istat pro of Dashboard, and it gets difficult to even rest my palm on the sides of touchpad and keypad.. I contacted customer care here, and they said to make a backup cuz they will put Lion again.. Is it Operating System's fault? Dirt's Fault? Manufacturer defect? or is it Normal?My Charger adapter also gets wayy too much hot after around 20 minutes that I cudnt even touch it!
