MacBook :: Restore Data From Faulty Hd?

Apr 15, 2012

I am a recent convert to Apple products & have a macbook.  The hard drive was upgraded with a 500gb drive.  Having imported all my files from old pc it seemed to work fantastically well for approx 2 months, then it started to misbehave!  It seems that I have a problem with the HD.  I have removed the faulty HD and replaced with a spare.  All of my data remains on the faulty HD.  I have purchased a external drive caddie & have attemted to 'mount' the faulty drive to copy info back onto mac.

I have a ton of stuff already installed and don't really want to re-install everything from scratch on the new 500Gb one. Question is can I use Time Machine on an external drive that already has stuff on it? Or do I have to use a freshly formatted one for it to work?

OS X :: Restore Data In Address Book?

Jul 11, 2009

I've searched the forums but still can't find the answer I'm looking for. This morning, I tried something on my iPhone called MyPhone+ which syncs my contacts on my phone with my Facebook account. This was all well and good, until I realized that it overwrote all the address information. which then went to mobileme, and then overwrote everything on my mac. SO, I looked in Time Machine, and my address book is perfect as of 6:00 am this morning. I selected that point in time, and clicked the RESTORE button, but nothing changes. Is it not possible to restore the data in address book to a point in time from the Time Machine backups?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Restore IPhoto From External HD To MacBook

Apr 12, 2012

I backed up my nearly 90GB iPhoto Library both through Time Machine on an external HD, and manually on another external HD. Upon erasing everything on my MacBook internal HD and reinstalling Tiger, I wanted to restore my iPhoto Library on the Mac internal HD from either of of my 2 external HDs. Now the iPhoto Libray contain around 19,500 photos. When I try to open iPhot and pressing shift and select the iPhoto Libray from either of the two external HD the process of import understandably takes a long time. THE PROBLEM  is why iPhoto shows it is importing over 90,000 photos and takes for ever to do it and then it keeps telling me there might be no space on my internal HD (which has 340GB available and the iPhoto Library is only about90 or 95GB)?

MacBook Pro :: Restore Lion To Original Factory Settings?

Apr 5, 2012

Early 2011 15" MBP with Lion (purchased new July 22, 2012). I had a two year old MBP running Snow Leopard then upgraded to Lion. The computer got flooded. I took out the hard drive and put it in a portable hard drive case and used it to restore my new MBP running Lion. It seemed to go very smooth and very easy. I am not a very knowledgable computer person, I use the computer for Photoshop, iTunes and email and just barely know not to turn it off with the on/off button! I keep noticing that I have two of many things in the computer, like library, multiple systems and multiple hard drives. I also get conflicting amounts of free hard drive space. I feel that I mistakenly copied too much stuff. I have backed up my files onto a fire wire hard drive. I want to "push a button" and have the computer  go back to the way it was the day I bought it. This time, I will take the time and move the files and programs manually (there are not that many). I am affraid a typical restore from Time Machine will only bring back the problems I am trying to get away from.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Macbook Cannot Boot: Hard-disk Repair / Restore Error

Apr 8, 2012

My MacBook is unable to boot. Whenever I try to boot, the spinning circle and the progress bar appears on the grey screen, but when the progress bar reaches about 40%, the computer shuts itself down. I started in Verbose Mode and tried AppleJack, and it said my harddisk needs to be repaired; but AppleJack is unable to do that. (Error Messages: "Invalid node structure" and "Incorrect number of thread records) I then tried to startup with both Recovery HD and Mac OS X Install DVD and ran the Disk Utility on both of the startups. At the First Aid tab, I selected my Hard Drive (not the Hitachi one, the Macintosh HD one) and clicked on Repair Disk. The error messages I got from Repair Disk were:Invalid volume file countInvalid node structureThe volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.

Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore your backed-up files. And, lastly, the following popup message appeared:Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. Not being sure how to back-up my files using Disk Utility, I plugged in an external HDD to my USB port and clicked on the Restore tab in the Disk Utility. As the Source, I selected Macintosh HD and as the Destination, I selected one of the partitions I created on my external HDD. However, when I clicked on Restore, I got the following error message:Restore FailureCould not restore - Input/output error I partitioned my external HDD by creating 2 partitions formatted in Mac OS Extended Journal - GPT. Now, what can I do to save my files (and my MacBook's HardDisk)?

MacBook Air :: How To Erase Data To Make Space Available To Reinstall Mac OS X Lion

Mar 13, 2012

My MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong.  Still, the system won't boot!

I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!

Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?
