MacBook Pro :: Clean Up Hard Disk Through Erase & Install

Jun 25, 2012

I have a MacBook Pro which was originally supplied with OS X10.4.9. I have upgraded using disks purchased from the Apple store to 10.5 and subsequently 10.6. More recently I upgraded to 10.7 using the download from the online App Store. I would like to perform an Erase and Install to get rid of the 'dross' on my hard disk and may do this as part of the 10.8 upgrade although have yet decide whether to wait for this or not.

when doing the erase and install, do I have to start from scratch by loading the original 10.4.9 OS X version or can I start at 10.7. If the latter how would I do this given that I don't have a disk as it was downloaded from the App Store?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Using Super Duper To Erase And Restore Hard Disk?

Apr 18, 2012

My older MBP is running very slow, and I have tried all the usual ways of making it run quicker - repair permissions, repair disk from Lion recovery partition, remove extraneous files, checking Activity Monitor, etc. etc. Someone suggested reformatting the HD and then restoring from a backup. I have the HD cloned to an external HD with Super Duper, but if I reformat the internal HD and restore from the clone, won't the problems that caused the issue in the first place just be cloned into SD and then restored to the reformatted internal drive, thus defeating the excercise?

OS X :: Disk Utility Now Allowing Me To Erase My Hard Drive - Way To Install Leopard

Aug 15, 2009

1. To grab all the files I need/don't want to lose (photos, music, documents, etc.)2. Then completely erase the 500GB HD so I can then install it into the new Macbook Pro and install Leopard.(I'll then externally connect the 160GB HD that came w/ my Macbook Pro and add the files I've already copied into that 160GB HD into the 500GB Leopard installed HD in the new Macbook Pro)So, currently my 500GB HD is connected to my Macbook pro and I want to completely erase everything so I'll then have a completely clean hard drive, to then install into the Macbook Pro, add the installation discs and install Leopard into the 500GB HD.

Mac Pro :: Disk Order In Disk Utility Messed Up

Jan 1, 2010

My Mac Pro has been acting strange on boot lately. When I hit the power button, the fans rev up normally, then there is a pause, the Apple chime sounds and instead of instantly getting the grey Apple boot screen the screen stays blank for about 20 seconds. Then I get the grey boot screen. I tried resetting the video controller by unplugging all things connected to my Mac Pro, unplugging it from the power source and then rebooting with nothing plugged. Didn't solve the issue.

After this odd startup, the computer boots into OSX fine. The OS works great. It's been over two weeks since I installed AHCI on Windows with gugucom's method and haven't had any problems since and none now except for this boot issue. MP boots into windows 7 fine. Only thing is that in SL when I hit shutdown or restart the MP doesn't always do so right away.

Furthermore, I just took a look in disk utility and the order of my disks has completely changed. My initial disk order was:

disk0: Macintosh SSD (BootDrive)
disk1: Win7 SSD Bootcamp
disk3: 1.5TB WD Backup
disk4: 640GB stock Apple HDD

Now Disk Utility reads:

disk0: 640GB stock apple HDD
disk1: 1.5TB WD Backup
disk2: Win7 SSD Bootcamp
disk3: Macintosh SSD (Boot)

How can I fix this boot issue. Can this be caused by the patching of my Win7 MBR for AHCI install even though I haven't had issues until yesterday? Any ways on how to fix this. If this may help... I have a 2.0TB WD HDD set up in Time Machine with several backup points however I have been working on a powerpoint project in Windows. Will a restore (if necessary) also restore my Windows drive to a previous date or not? Any help is welcome.

OS X :: MacBook Disk Erase Failed While Booted From External HD

Aug 4, 2009

I'm booted on a MacBook Pro from an external drive, and I want to erase the drive inside the MacBook using Disk Utility from the external. For some reason or another, it won't let me do this. When I click on the Erase tab (whether clicked on the disk itself or the volume "Macintosh HD") and try to erase it, it returns with the error:

Disk Erase failed
Disk Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.

When I try to install an image onto the drive, I get a similar error, except it says "Operation not permitted." When I tried it while booted with an OS X DVD, it worked fine. As far as I know, I should be able to do this while booted from the external HD.

MacBook Pro :: Order To Upgrade To Lion After Putting In A Brand New Hard Drive In It?

Apr 9, 2012

I  have a 2008 macbook pro with brand new 500GB hard drive and 6GB new RAM.    My old hard drive is backed up on external drive, via time machine. When the shop put in the new hard drive (there was nothing wrong with old one, it was just stuffed to the brim), they loaded snow leopard from a disk, but I haven't put anything from the old drive back on yet....I haven't even configured my mail and am just reading mail  from ipad and phone these days.

Should I install Lion before I restore all the old backed-up stuff, or is it important to have anything, ( like maybe preferences)  already on the computer when I download Lion.  I want to be selective when restoring from time machine, because my old hard drive had a lot of ancient software and junk on it that had migrated from every computer we've ever owned, and that is many, many. So, I'm just stuck on the best way to proceed.  Also, should I install the latest update for 10.6.8 before I download Lion? I see today that some new updates have become available; java, security, safari, and apple software installer.

MacBook :: How To Erase External Hard Drive

Mar 28, 2012

Macbook OS X 10.5.8 and a WD 10EAVS 1TB External Hard Drive. That's all. I was given this by a fellow student on campus who was graduating. So I want to use this to store my iTunes Library (my Macbook's hard drive ran out of space). Here's what I do:

- Macbook is turned on and running

- I plug the external hard drive into a working outlet --> Hard drive turns on

- I plug the external hard drive into the mac using a USB connection --> Disk Insertion Error message: the disk you insterted was not readable by this computer

- It is not readable so I open it in Disk Utility (the hard drive is listed/recognized)

- I attempt to erase and/or partition the hard drive in order to format it in Mac OS Extended OR Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but I get one of these two messages: "Disk Erase failed with the error: File system formatter failed." OR "Disk Erase failed with the error: The underlying task reported failure on exit."

I attempted to look up what these mean or how to fix the problem but nothing is really working. I was able to format the hardware line to MS-DOS (FAT) and the sub-line as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but I don't even know if that's right or not.Basically, I need my computer to recognize this hard drive whenever I plug it in and to run smoothly as "extra space" to store my music on.I haven't had A LOT of experience with external hard drives but enough to get things done. But this problem is a killer.

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.

The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.

If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.
