MacBook :: Sudden Drop In Performance After CD Import Failure
Jul 27, 2010
My macbook was running at basic, normal speed, nothing too serious for a year-old laptop, but suddenly one day, my performance dropped sharply, to the point where it would take up to ten minutes to attempt to get to a page, and songs would freeze for about a minute about 3 times per song in iTunes. It all started when I attempted to import a CD into iTunes (it was downloaded onto my HD, not imported directly from a CD), and I got the message "attempting to copy to the disk macintosh hd failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." About this time, my computer started acting unusually slow, (the problems mentioned above).
I did some looking into this, and did both suggestions listed here (Disk permission repair, then manual iTunes folder permissions change):
http://discussions.apple.com/message...623410#7623410.
After this my problems were eased for a little bit, I was even able to import the folder I had been unable to import earlier. But I tried then to import the very next CD (it was an 8-CD set), and then I got the same error. Thinking it was possibly a problem with a corrupted/infected file, so I ran a scan through my whole computer (using McAfee), which didn't return any problems. Then, on top of this, my mac suddenly stopped burning CDs, saying that the CD failed because of a "medium write error."
I have been experiencing a problem lately. Once a while my MBP '10 screen will have a sudden drop of brightness and then back to normal. Does anyone have similar problem?
Before the update I was gaming perfectly fine on pretty much Medium - High settings. The only game I have been playing lately is HON - Heroes of Newerth. Everything ran exactly as it should and I never had any problems. However, a couple of days ago I booted up the game and tried to play and noticed my FPS dropped by a lot. I even tried cranking down everything to low, and all it does is make everything pixelated, but my fps does not move at all.
I then realized the day before, I ran Software Update and ended up bumping up to 10.6.5. I honestly cannot think of what other reason in why performance would drop. I ran both a disk permission repair and a verify disk repair. Ran onyx to do a clean up scan. Flash online, video files, music, everything else I have tested is performing as it should. Anyone else having issues with the recent osx patch?
I've had my brand new 13" MBP with 128GB SSD for a month or so and love it. However in the last day, performance has dropped dramatically while watching video. I was on Hulu watching a high-res show, and about 15 minutes in, it started getting very choppy -- audio was OK, but video performance dropped. I quit, restarted, tried again, same problem immediately. System load was around 2.79. I tried in both Safari and Firefox, no dice. YouTube seems to have dropped now as well (I'm playing a video in another tab now, and again the audio is great but the video is choppy). I'm currently hooked up to a 22" LCD through the DVI output (the laptop itself is closed).
Is this normal? I mean I've got 4GB of RAM and 2.53GHz CPU with a solid-state disk! There should be 0 latency and this dual-core beast should tear through video no problem, and here I am closing off iTunes and other apps to try to spare some CPU (this doesn't work though). I've even switched to standard-res for both hulu and youtube but it's not much better. I am shocked that a brand new 2.53GHz CPU with 4GB can't handle this. I also installed and am now running Hulu Desktop to try to get better performance. The really weird thing is a week ago I was a on a flight chewing through YouTube while on Skype and using Entourage and iTunes all at the same time, and it was blazing fast. Now I'm crawling along like an old 1.6GHz with 512MB RAM. WTF, mate?
Since updating, my computer is barely usable. Geekbench score fell from ~5400 to ~ 2300, so it's not just my imagination. I was exporting video and the processor didn't even feel warm, but Activity Monitor reported that it was giving it all the power it had. Anybody else seen this? I'm on a 13" mid 2011 Air with the i7 nad 256GB SSD.
I am not sure if it only my macbook, but I notice a slight performance drop when I run on the battery v the AC. I notice that my application load slower, folders open slower and expose and spaces response is also slow as well.
My iMac has just gotten all grumpy and weird with me, when attempting to browse anything on the internet (or even trying to access the router via 192.168.1.1) everything is ridiculously slow or just doesn't load. At first the speed went down dramatically - i went on speedtest.net and did a test, the page took a good 5 mins to load and after the test it turned out that i had a speed of 0.2 Mbps (my average speed on a good day is about 2.5 Mbps, shocking i know!) Ive tried turning the computer off and restarting it to no avail. Im doing this on my Macbook Pro which is sat next to the iMac and with a speed test is coming up with speed of about 2.2 Mbps, so its clearly the machine and not the internet/router. Ive tried using Safari, Chrome and Firefox they all provide the same, unusably slow responces.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard on my brand new MBP, I have taken notice of a definitive perf drop in OpenGL, particularly when I make use of switching windows via Spaces. The transition between windows skips and is not a smooth animation.
Recently Aperture has a problem reading all the photos on my 4GB Sandisk memory cards (2 cards, same problem).
When importing pictures from Aperture (RAW) - it only reads about 10 pictures, displays the thumbnail and then stops reading from the card (when there is still hundreds more pictures to be imported).
What I have to do is import with iPhoto and then drag them into Aperture. This is a pain though. I happens on both my memory cards and is a recent thing. It used to work.
iPhoto reads the memory cards in the camera very quickly, but Aperture consistently fails on more than one memory card which leads me to exclude the cards as the point of failure.
Macbook Pro won't boot. Symptoms preceding failure included failure to open Firefox. When trying to cold boot I can get as far as the start-up sound, the Apple logo, and the spinning whieel (spins for a bit but not for very long) and then major failure. Not running Liom.
Info: imac 10.1, Mac OS X (10.6.2), also have macbook pro running os 10.5
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can no longer import P2 footage. I get the stop sign and error: no data.In the import window I can play the clip and everything is fine, but when I add to the clip to the import queue it just times out.
Any thoughts? Is it somehow related to Quicktime being updated by Snow Leopard?
Information: Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.6.1) Final Cut 5.1
I recently purchased an MP3 album from Amazon, which downloaded fine. Unlike previous times, however, the Amazon Downloader app didn't load the music into my iTunes library. I tried to manually add the album to my iTunes Library, with no luck. I was able to load the album into my iPhone Music app by dragging and dropping on my iPhone device in iTunes (after turning off iTunes Match).. If I double-click on the songs on my hard drive, they will play in iTunes, but do not import.
I am running Mac OS 10.7.3, iTunes 10.6.1 (7) and have iTunes Match active on my computer.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)
Do the MBAs with a SSD still have a sudden motion sensor? I was trying to use smack book with my Rev A SSD, but the SMS is either broken or missing, trying to figure out which it is.
my macpro is brand new. have had it for maybe a month. all of a sudden the charger isnt working. when i connect it to the mac it doesnt light up. has this happend to anyone ?
Just recently my 13" Macbook Pro started to run very slowly. When I search something on google, the spinning wheel will pop up as my cursor and remain for about 30 seconds while I am unable to do or click on anything and if itunes is playing in the background then the song will stop abruptly. Everything eventually loads but its just a pain in the butt. Before this i was doing the exact same type of things with my computer and it handled them fine so i do not believe its an issue of RAM. THis happened to me once before and when I turned my computer back on it just got to the gray apple logo and would go no further, somehow my harddrive failed.
I have a Macbook pro and my dvd player all of a sudden will not work , but it works fine on virtual machine.when I put a dvd in I get a message saying "the dvd you inserted is not readable by this computer"I think it started after my last updates, but not sure
For some reason I don't have the screen at top of screen where I type www. whatever screen or the arrows to go back one screen. It use to be there all the time. I don't know what I did.
I have The Sims 3 for my macbook pro and have been using it, all of a sudden the application is missing. I wonder if its just been accidentally moved to another folder, however I can't find it in any search that I have done. Is my only option to reintall it and lose everything I have done on that game?
MacBook Pro stopped working all of a sudden. There was battery left, but it shut down completely and won't even charge..out of nothing. MBP is just a few years old.
My Mac screen is weird. Yesterday my Mac was making beeping nosies <--fixed. But today when I turn on my Mac the screen is divided by two... And it also has like weird lines all over the screen. I put in my pass word and the screen all of sudden just the screen is divided by two
These problem occur in a late 2013 Macbook Pro. All of sudden my "5" key doesn't work. But if I press any other number, I will get that number and the "5". All other keys work properly. Other symptoms include a running series of 5s in password boxes. I'm absolutely sure there is no water damage. Usb keyboard works fine. Another symptom is an occasional flickering menu when I pull down say Safari or the Apple icon, such that I can't make a selection. I took the 5 keypad off and it looks and reacts just fine. About 10% of the time this problem disappears. Did a virus scan. I'm running Yosemite.
I just dropped in a 1 TB drive into my 17" MacBook Pro and it seems like that the Sudden Motion Sensor doesn't work not. I do not hear the sound when it engages as I did with the stock 500 gig drive that was in there. My understanding is that the Sudden Motion Sensor was not built into the drive and it was built into the notebook itself. Shouldn't I still be hearing the drive stop when the Sudden Motion Sensor engages?
I've got a 2010 13" MBP with an SSD installed. It has all the latest updates including iLife '11 and M$ Office 2011.I was watching videos in iTunes (music videos bought from iTunes store). As I went to play the next video, it wouldn't play; it just froze my computer. I did a hard rest and tried it with a few more, all of them froze my mac for about 30 seconds before playing. My first thought was it was an IO wait and my SSD was playing up. So I checked the console and have being getting Quote:
NVDA(Video) Channel timeout!whenever I try to play a video. Next step, I tried to play a video in iTunes and quicktime from an external hard drive with the same result, ruling out the SSD.lease don't be my graphics card failing after only having the mac for 2 weeks, I was thinking! It then occurred to me that it maybe a codec problem, so I tried playing videos in VLC (ones not purchased in itunes but producing similar playback problems) and they worked!
