I recently noticed something rather peculiar about my MacBook. When I put my computer to sleep, the sleep light never does what it used to. As far as I remember, the light is supposed to very bright, then go dim, and then go back to being bright correct? Well, since I installed the latest OS X update, I've noticed that my sleep light never gets dimmer. It just stays on full brightness all the time.

I set the MBP to sleep in 10 min through the Energy Saver pref with the option to sleep the hdds. When it's about to sleep the screen dims, then turns black, then the sleep light comes on but does not blink no matter how long I leave it. The blinking only happens when I close the lid or when I select the Sleep option under the Apple logo. Is that normal behavior?

I noticed that the light no longer blinks when it is on sleep. I recently upgraded my internal HD and have no idea if that could have caused it or not. I guess, since my Mac is three years old, there is also the possibility that the light just got old and went out.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought a new mpb , i7. a few weeks ago it turned off and it wouldnt turn back on when i connected it to the power source , the sleep light however kept flashing, and it madethis sound like if it was trying to boot. anyway,i left it charging for a bit and it started working on its own.
however, lately its been shutting down when it runs out of battery instead of hibernating (which is really frustrating). and just now its doing the flashing thing again, cept for a much longer time.. any idea how to resolve this/what might be wrong with it?
Last night after I shut my MBP, I went to re-open it a few minutes later to find the computer to do nothing. If I try a hard restart with the power button it sounds like it is going to boot but nothing happens. The only real indication I have that it is even on at all is the light on the lid latch is on but not pulsating. When the lid is up the light is very faint and when the lid is closed the light is bright. I have tried most of the things i saw on the apple support site with no luck.

This doesn't seem to be affecting battery life, so it is clearly going into sleep mode as always. It's not a huge problem, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen it.
View 7 Replies View Relatedmy power cord comes unplugged. my battery is 100% charged, and yet whenever the magsafe comes unplugged the whole thing shuts down. I notice the sleep light blinks rapidly a few times then when my cord goes back in things restore? Edit: My macbookpro is a Unibody which is less then 6 months old. I received it as a replacement unit from apple (due to a lemon macbookpro i originally had) Which i figured means that the battery cant be bad, i take extremely good care of my computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI own a MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz and my problem happend like this:Last night I stopped playing SC2 and closed my MBP, then this morning I noticed that while it was closed, it had not gone to sleep mode, or at least that's what I thought, because it was too hot and the fans spinning hard. I openned it and showed no video, but remained on. After a 5-sec power button restart, it flashed the sleep indicator once and did nothing else, except for the HD spinned for a sec.I took the battery off and gave the computer time to cool off, because I sensed it way too hot.After I reinstalled the battery, I was able to turn it on the normal way, it worked just fine, but later I closed it again and when I openned it, it showed no video again.I repeated the process of letting it cool down, but with no effect this time.The sleep indicator turns on once and it does nothing.I tried swapping the memories, resetting the SMC, tried booting pressing control + command + r + p, tried booting without the battery, tried booting without the magsafe, nothing has worked.Now what happens when I press the power button is I hear the HD try to spin for half a second and the sleep indicator turn on once.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy Macbook (I believe a 2008 model wouldn't wake up from it's sleep like it does every time I open it (I usually set it to sleep rather than shut it down). I turned it off manually, but when I attempted reboot it does either one of two things:
a) When I simply press the power on button, the screen stays black and the sleep light fades on once, but then fades off and all mechanical sounds abruptly stop.
b) When I press and hold the power button, the sleep light fades on, but then flashes about 10 times rapidly before fading in and once again abruptly turning off.
I have tried this with the charger plugged in several different outlets, not plugged into the Macbook, waiting, removing and putting back the battery. A Google search said it might have something to do with the RAM and pushing it back in, but I have no idea how to do that.
I have the new 2.4 GHz MacBook model since last Thursday, and something throws me off a little bit.
When I close the lid, putting the MacBook to sleep, I can still hear the inner workings (fan, maybe hdd) of the laptop for a while. And the light doesn't blink softly and slow like it did on the iBook.
As I come from the iBook, I was used to wait one to ten seconds to get it to sleep after the lid was closed, and the blinking light showed me it was asleep. But the MacBook's doesn't.
Is that normal?
PS: I made two tests. It took 28 seconds until the light started pulsing, shortly after the fan stopped spinning and the hard drive reading/writing head (?) stopped in its safe position.
I have a macbook pro 13" and I'm running on Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6.6. What happened is that I close the laptop while it was turned on. After a while I opened it and the screen wouldn't turn on. Other thing I noticed was that the sleep light was also turned off, instead of blinking.
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy backlight decided it only wants to light up intermittently. and only for a little bit at a time. screen seems to still work, but when i open from sleep, sometimes it will flicker on the right side (like a fluorscent bulb) and go out again, or light up completely like it is supposed to, or do nothing at all. Machine is over 2 years old, and has gotten a lot of use. What are the chances this is a relatively cheap (1-200) fix? The machine is in good shape otherwise except for palmrest cracking which i havent gotten fixed due to the fact there is no apple store within 100 miles...
View 1 Replies View RelatedWeeks back, had some blinds by my desk fall on my opened Macbook and strike right near the power button. No real physical damage, although the power button feels a tad stiffer when pressed. But since then, at start up, the sleep light will flash quickly off and on for a short burst, but then proceed with start up.
I've searched around the internets and seem to think that this might be a memory problem. But in most cases the computer won't start up at all. In my case the only indication I have of a problem is flashing sleep light at start up.
PROPOSITION: Turn the sleep indicator light to a power indicator light.
I just noticed, the sleep indicator light pulses when my MBP is in sleep, but is always completely off when it's in use. This is actually a little frustrating, as sometimes I leave my MBP idle with the screen off and the backlit keyboard off as well, and I can't tell if the thing is on or not since it's dead silent.
Also, I noticed that when I leave my MBP plugged in, idle overnight, the sleep indicator light is solid in the morning. It's definitely not indicating sleep, since the unit is on, so I'm not sure what it means.
Anyway, anyone else think the sleep indicator light should be solid when the computer is in use? How would you tell the difference between an MBP that is powered off, and closed and slipped into a backpack, from an MBP that is simply powered on but fails to enter sleep for some reason?
Is there a way to keep the light on forever, sort of like a power indicator? ALL my previous laptops have some sort of power LED just so you can at least tell it's on. It just doesn't make sense to me.
my MBP has been asleep for quite some time, im ready to go to school or wherever, and as soon as I pick it up to put it in my backpack the "apple" on the lid illuminates and the blinking "sleep" light becomes solid...wtf? am i holding it wrong? I dont want to risk damaging my hdd.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI woke up this morning and my Macbook Pro won't turn on. The sleep mode light is just constantly on but there is nothing on the screen. I've tried shutting down and booting back up. Removing the battery and putting it back on and rebooting. I've tried rebooting without the battery and plugged into the power adapter. I've reset the PRAM. I've took the battery out and held down the power button for 5 seconds. Nothing seems to work.
Also, the last week the battery said "replace soon" and then the other day it said "replace now". I've checked the battery level and it seems to be fine. And wouldn't it just start up from the power cord? I would love for it to just be a battery issue. But it not starting up with the power cord and the sleep mode light being constantly on makes me thing otherwise.
I noticed when I put my new MBP 15" to sleep, there is a little black dot inside the sleep light. I know it's a minor issue, but is this normal?
If not normal, is it possible dust got inside? Would I be able to blow aerosol air in that area if I remove the bottom plate?
What is the philosophy why the Retina MBP has no Sleep Light and Battery Status LED?

I was using my MacBook this evening and navigated to a webpage that wouldn't load (perhaps due to excessive load) when my screen turned off and refused to turn back on. The white "sleep" light remained constant. I shut the screen and the light started to blink after the optical drive made it's noise and then I opened the screen again. The display turned on for a few seconds turning back off and the light on the front reverted to it's constant state.
I repeated pressing keys, the mouse and closing and opening the screen a few times before holding the power button down and forcing it to shut down. It's working fine now. I am wondering what caused this sudden behaviour though and how to best stop it from happening again, if I was working on something that needed to be saved, I'd be buggered. Perhaps it's an issue Apple needs to service, but how do I reproduce the effect then?

Last.fm helper app (but no songs were currently playing)
I was thinking it could possibly be related to the Last.fm app, but why would it turn my screen off and then cause it to continue to not respond/turn off? Should I be looking in the Console for a log before shutting down tonight, would that reveal something?
This morning, I synced my iPod with my MacBook and upon completion and permission to disconnect the device, I pulled out the USB cord. At that point the computer instantly turned itself off, and when I hit the power button, I could hear the system trying to start up, but the screen remained black and the sleep light glowed continuously. I unplugged the charger, took out the battery and put it back in, and tried all the troubleshooting tips under the Apple Support guide with no success. I also discovered that when I closed the laptop while it was "on," it would seem to boot up a little more before returning to the black screen. I left it alone for a few hours, and when I tried again to turn it on, it booted up normally and as I was searching for updates, it shut down again as it had earlier.
Does anyone have anything for me to try? I don't want to have to take it into a shop because I can just barely afford to, but I need this computer! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :-)

I had an iBook, now I have a powerbook. Both have the feature when I shut the computers and they are in sleep mode, the light goes from dim to bright to dim to bright..... It drives me nuts. I have to put my computer in a drawer or cover it up at night. Does anyone know how to turn the light off? or have it be constant? Is there a download that fixes it?
View 24 Replies View RelatedTonight I came into my office and my PowerBook was sleeping. I have an external display and I usually turn my display on and wiggle the mouse (after I turn that on) and nothing happened. I looked and my display was still in standby mode, my wacom and eye tv had the same behavior. The powerbook light stopped blinking (I heard the drive wake) and then nothing. Nothing happened still. I opened the lid, hit the power button and still nothing. Held it down, and nothing. I ended up having to take the battery out and then I started the machine. Since then I've rebooted twice just for fun and since then the below screenshot shows that the "Jessica's Computer" window keeps popping up.
Two questions:
#1 What could have happened or what does it mean when the powerbook is sleeping, then wakes but never really wakes and just shuts off?
#2 What is up with that window opening as though this is some sort of start up program you'd find in windows?

When I am in a quiet room, I notice a light humming coming from my macbook pro and also a light vibration on the right side. Is this just the hd spinning or something to be concerned about? it is 2 weeks old.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI leave my Air on pretty much all the time, and put it to sleep while moving around etc. Sleeping it disconnect the Airport connection - which if very annoying. At a desk I've just been dimming the display all the way off in order to keep my connection.
However, I recently noticed that by setting a "sleep display" hot corner, my network connection is maintained.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is sleep display equivalent (functionally) to simply dimming the display all the way down?
2) Is there a way to either set up a shortcut to sleep the display (other than a hot corner) and/or set it so that only the DISPLAY sleeps after 'x' minutes?
I have a macbook pro 13" early 2011 and I'm se as shown in the pictures (since i upgraded to os x yosemite) . It happens after display sleep or computer sleep on login not on boot up .I've noticed that i run out of ram when the problem appears (only 15MB RAM available out of 4GB), though i doesn't happen every time . I've talked to service and told me its either motherboard replacement or because the ram isn't enough (gpu shares with main ram) so maybe i should try upgrading ram. URL....

I have torrents going all the time. If the computer goes to sleep, the internet disconnects, so they stop. Display sleep wouldn't disconnect though. Is it OK to have computer sleep on "never" but keep display on "15 minutes"? I don't usually even leave the computer on overnight.
