MacBook :: Set Screen Brightness Battery / Power?
Jan 19, 2009
I am just wondering if there is a way to have a brightness preset for when the macbook is plugged into the wall and running on battery?Eg. When plugged in I want 100% prightness, but when running off battery it automatically lowers the brightness.Right now I manually lower it and some times forget.. especially times when I need that extra bit of battery power

I've noticed recently that my screen brightness will suddenly increase or decrease by itself. When I press one of the control buttons it indicates that it is 3 or 4 steps higher or lower (obviously allowing for the fact that pressing a control button moves you one step anyway!) I have the 1.8 SDD. I love the machine....but anyone have any ideas about this. It only happens under battery power.

I am seriously considering purchasing one of the new unibody MBP's with the new "7 hour" battery. Just a couple quick questions for you all: Do you get 7 hours when you turn wifi off, the screen down to 1/3 brightness, don't use the CD drive/etc, or does it actually last 6-7 hours in normal use (surfing web, screen really bright, backlit keyboard on)? Has anyone experienced a degradation in battery life after a bunch of cycles? I notice apple claims that the new battery will last 5 years, yet they don't warranty it for more than a year. That does not sound good to me. Opinions?

The brightness goes up when you plug in your MBA, but then over time it just goes up and up. I honestly like my brightness pretty low (rarely more than half, typically at 3-5 notches), but it just keeps on going up and up. I almost never set it above half, but multiple times a day, I notice that it looks pretty high and it's at like 3/4 so I put it it down to about 1/3, but after a while, it's just up again.
Anyone else notice this? What is it, why does it do this? How can I fix it? I don't mind not having auto-brightness (even though I loved it), as long as my screen doesn't keep going up.

I have dual ACD's. How do I make it so that both screens have the same brightness? If I adjust the brightness in the display settings it adjusts the main screen, but then not the other one. How do I make them the same?

Excluding sitting outside in the sun or in very dark rooms, what level do you usually keep your MBA brightness level at and what kind of battery life do you get? I've got mine set to about 65%, haven't used it enough to know what kind of life I get.

Has anyone noticed a very slight flicker on their new MBPs? I have a new 13" and, every so often, the screen brightness dims and then brightens very quickly (happens in less than a second). The option for auto-adjusting the screen brightness is off so it's not that particular function. It's most noticeable on all-white backgrounds both on AC and battery power. Hard drive access doesn't seem to coincide with the dimming.

lately, my mba has been behaving a little weirdly. its screen would suddenly become a little dimmer when the brightness in the room has not changed a bit. after a long while(15 min?), it'll turn brighter again by itself, and again without any change in the lighting of the room. the change is not big but obviously. any idea? can it be some software? or setting? or a defective light sensor?

Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this or if any experts out there know of the issue.I have a spare White Macbook (late 2008: Core 2 Duo 2.1GHz, 1GB, 120GB) that I'd like to set up for my brother to use to introduce him to the wonderful world of Macs. The problem it is having is that when I have a battery connected to it (I tried 2 different ones included a known-good one that is brand-new just purchased from Apple) it powers on and gives me the chime, but then immediately shuts off unexpectedly giving that little "whine" sound like if it just lost power all of a sudden. However, when i take out the battery, and just plug it into the Magsafe AC charger it works fine. Also when just trying to run on battery it does not turn on at all. Here's some cliffs:
1) Macbook with just battery does not turn on
2) Macbook with battery + Magsafe AC charger connects powers on, gives the chime, but then immediately shuts off making the "whine" sound as if the power was suddenly cut off
3) Macbook with no battery connected and just the Magsafe AC charger connected works fine.Do you guys think this is either:
A) battery connector issue (the little piece with the metal wires that the battery connects to. ~$50 part)
B) Logic Board issue
I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU to no avail.

I just turned on my 13" MBP and got this message. Apparently, this is supposed to come up when there is only like 5% charge left. My battery indicator at the top of the screen said there was 22% charge left. Also, according to IStat, my battery's health has already dropped down to 97% after only about 2 weeks and 5 cycles. Is this normal? I'm going to try recallibrating my battery by fully charging it and then letting it fully drain. Is there a good chance that this solves this problem?

Also, on startup the brightness is set to max , while my settings was very low brightness. Howcome, its starting with max brightness now, when I dont have changed anything ? And what about the fan sound and speed? And yes, does the iMac has a battery also ? for what? Its always plugged to AC current, then what is the battery doing ? I never knew that. just downloaded istat pro and it shows HD 35 degree and Battery 55%. Wht is it ?

Recently, after about 5 minutes of use (not sitting idle), my MacBook's screen will go very dim. I hit the buttons on the keyboard to take the brightness all the way up, but it doesn't get much brighter and there's only one thing that I can do to make the screen go brighter: I go into System Preferences and click Display. The second I click that, the brightness returns without me doing anything in the Display section, so after Display comes up, I just close it out and the screen brightness is fine for a while. It seems to do this after the lid has been closed for a while and then starts dimming again after opening the lid and using it for about 5 minutes. Is there a way to fix the auto-dim mode without disabling it? MacBook (white) is running Leopard 10.5.8 with all the latest updates.

When I push the brightness key on the keyboard, the appropriate image comes up on screen and goes to full brightness, but the actual brightness of the screen doesn't change and the lack of change is reflected correctly on the brightness slider in System Preferences.

I have the aluminum MacBook (<3) and it is often found on my desk, in front of my aluminum desk lamp. I was writing a paper and had one hand on my touchpad and touched my (off, but plugged in) light with my other hand. My screen dimmed just a little bit, approx the brightness between the two highest lighting levels. Even when not touching my touchpad, just touching my light, my screen did the same thing. Depending on WHERE on the lamp I touch, it affects the brightness... but only on the bell surrounding the light bulb, no other components of the light.

I don't know if anyone posted this issue before. I can not control screen Brightness on my MBP 13'. I tried my F1 and F2 key and the Nvidia Control Panel, either of them is working. I installed all the drivers from the CD and it can actually show the icon in the center(bottom) of the screen when I hit the F1 or F2 Key. However, the brightness adjust does not work, the screen stay the same.

I have a macbook and a screen plugget to it. Now I use just the new screen and don't use the macbook one. But every time I turn the mac on the macbook screen turns on, and I have to decrease the brightness manually every time. (cause it's a waste of energy to keep it on if I don't use it). So I'd like to know to set the screen brightness to 0 by default, so I don't have to turn the brightness down every time.

(Electricity as in AC power.) I've been using the brightness controls (F keys) to turn off the screen at night and leave my computer running. I just assumed it uses less AC power that way and I'm saving some electricity but I don't know a lot about electricals to confirm my theory. Does anyone know?

I've been wearing contacts all my life in order to get 20/20 vision. And until last week I always had to have my brightness on the highest setting while I was at the office with fairly bright overhead lighting. While using the computer at home with the lights off/dim, I still had to have the brightness set to 4 bars shy of the brightest setting in order to see everything properly. And I never understood when I would see people on here saying they had their brightness set to the lowest settings and it was plenty bright for them to see. Last friday I had LASIK done.
And since the surgery I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes, which was expected. But one thing I did not expect was the difference in brightness. Now in the same office setting I have the brightness set to 40-50% brightness and it's still almost to bright. And at home I set the brightness level to 1 bar and it's more than enough to see every detail on the screen. In fact, I now wish there was a lower brightness setting than the lowest bar. The best part is that, while running on battery, I can now get another 30-40 minutes out of usage with the brightness set so much lower. Now if I could just figure out how to get my volume to not jump to 70% when I plug my headphones in I would be very pleased.
