View 15 RepliesI recently got a Macbook and have a iPhone and iPod shuffle. The thing is there isn't enough usb ports on the Macbook so I had to get a hub. The hub I got IS self powered and does not require a external power adapter. My concern is that I am withdrawing too much power from my usb port through this hub. It is a 4 port hub and a External HDD ( has own power supply), Optical mouse is connected to it. also I charge my iPhone and shuffle via the same hub.
I am afraid that there is power limit feature and it will fry my computer. I notice if I boot in boot camp to windows. Windows will display a error message telling me, I am not allowed to have this many device drawing this much power. Anyone know if I should be okay as long as OS X doesn't give me a message or should I really consider getting a USB hub with its own power adaptor?
i need a good usb hub that can be powered off the other usb port on my 13in macbook pro cause i have a portable usb hd that when one usb port wont power it can get power off the other and operate but that claims the other port
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering if a full system restore can be harmful or if it's good to do every once in a while to get that "fresh" computer feeling. I just re-installed OSX and everything feels like new but was just wondering if this is bad for the hard drive or something.

I'm thinking about getting a macbook pro with an SSD (and I know the refresh is just around the corner, but for business reasons, this money has to be spent now). It seems most people put the OS and apps on the SSD, and keep a hard drive for all their data. If I could pare down my data suffiently, would it be reasonable to put the whole file system on an SSD? My worries is that the frequently-created files like various /tmp files would significantly reduce the life of the SSD, even if I have TRIM support.(I'm thinking about getting one of the OWC Mercury Extreme SSDs, for what it's worth.)

I have had several issues with the USB on my brand-new Core i5 macbook pro. It randomly disconnects USB devices. I've had the issue with multiple USB devices - same story with each one. Further, iTunes will only recognize my iPhone if it is in the port nearest the magsafe connector. The other port fails to recognize my iPhone entirely. Anyone else having a USB issue on their base 15" that was released today?
Furthermore, any suggestions of what to do about it? I'm having a hell of a time restoring my iPhone with this issue... And the Apple Store is over an hour away-I planned a special trip to buy this laptop.
I'm getting a high resolution, and it looks alright, but it's not fully using the widescreen. That's "aspect" right? Well anyway, I also have a 19" display and it works perfectly. My Xbox, cable box and movies all use the full widescreen on the Acer, but the Macbook with the super amazing Mini DisplayPort doesn't even use the full resolution. What's with that? I thought the reason they had this new port and a $30 adapter was for higher resolutions!

View 24 Replies View RelatedHow many of you would like to see a HDMI Port? Why the miniDisplay port? Why not remove ethernet jack and miniDisplay port and replace it with a HDMI port. That way one HDMI cable feeds digital video AND audio. Am I the only one thinking of this?
View 22 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a full Lion system on a USB key. I am not talking about a Cracker Jack installer and disk utility thing. I am talking about a full useable system. Why would I want to do this? Let's see, I have a 3 month old MacBook Air with a failing SSD, a brand new Mac Pro with NO THUNDERBOLT jack, an over-designed FireWire to Thunderbolt dongle that Apple took 2 YEARS to develop and still has yet to bring to market (which may or may not support Target Disk Mode on FireWire Macs... like my brand new tower) and NO way to run Carbon Copy Cloner on a booted system that can see the failing SSD as a local disk. I'm sure I don't need to mention the kick in the pants that is Spotlight trying to index a failing drive, corrupting data as it does so. Sorry but I don't have access to a THIRD mac with Thunderbolt. Just these two very new machines. If there is no way to get the MacBook Air mounted in Target Disk Mode on another mac, I need to boot it from a System that is not corrupting files like crazy due to media failure. I can't use the brilliant new "Recovery Partition" thing they created because, well, that's also on the failing disk.
When I run the 10.7 installer on the MacBook it says this is an unsupported system. Years ago it was possible to install OSX to a disk other than the boot disk without rebooting the machine. Not any more. When I clone Mac OS Install ESD to a thumb drive and try to boot from it, I get the big X. When I try to make the USB key on the tower, after needlessly rebooting it, of course, using ANOTHER USB key with the ESD image, my target USB key (which is 64gb) is greyed out, and hence not selectable as a target volume for the installation.

I recently purchased a PCI card made by SIIG: CyberSerial PCI 16550 RS232 Serial I/O Card. After I got it I noticed the system requirements only list Windows. For the **** of it I installed it in my Power Mac. The system seems to recognize it in "About This Mac..." as a "Serial Controller". There appear to be serial ports assigned to it: /dev/cu.pci-serial3a.When I try to run a serial terminal program over this port (connected to some known working hardware) I get gibberish. I've checked out the cable and remote hardware on another machine and it works fine.

The Apple store sales person told me that I cannot backup my installed applications nor the OS with Time Machine. I have the latest version of Leopard. Lets say my hard disk crashes. Do I have to reinstall all the apps from scratch? Is there a backup program other than Time Machine? Should I be using dd?

Has anyone here have any success using an external USB drive (2.5 or 1.8 small drives) thru a hub with the Air?
I know I could use a powered hub but I hate taking and messing about with additional power supplies when I travel.
does anyone know of a specific model HD that works with out needing to connect directly to the one USB port but thru the hub?
Is there no way around this? is the USB simply for power? IE can i just plug it into a powered USB hub (thats not actually plugged into the air?
View 5 Replies View Related I share a quite common problem. My macbook doesnt boot-up.It does power on and gets into the booting up process but nothing happens...
To be more precise, after powering on the MB, the grey display appears and after a while the apple logo and the circle of lines starts to move around.
After that nothing else happens...
I ve tried everything possible... SMC reset, PRAM reset, verifying the disc by booting up either from single user and check it with fsck or with the booting disc and run all the verifying tests and the repair ones... Everything there were just as NORMAL...The OS refuses to open either in normal mode, or at safe mode or even the verbose mode, though it does boot up in single-user mode.
I even took out the HDD and place it in a HDD cover and then plug it as an external device to my other MBP. I run the tests once again but everything seems to be NORMAL again...The only thing that is left to check is whether the boot files have any problem...
Did a quick search and couldn't find anything. My HD in my powerbook and full and I can't seem to start up my powerbook because the hard drive is so full. Does anyone know a way to get the computer started up so I can free up some space in my hard drive? I also have an external HD if that is of any help.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI am new to the forum and so far have learnt a few things about my Mac. I have a problem tho. For the last few days, my MacBook had been giving me warning about the startup disc being full. Since then, I have taken steps to free up some space by deleting files and creating archives.owever, today, when I switched on my Mac today, nothing came on except a picture of a folder and a "?" on it. My question is, what can I do to start/restart my Mac and is there anything else I can do to free up my Startup disc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedGot a new (used) 15" MBP and I'm trying to do a full system restore via Tima Capsule over the network. Started it last night at 11PM Estimated time was 15 hours.. Just got home from work the next day 5PM and it now says 5 Hours. But it jumps up a few minutes then down.
I did find a ethernet cable so my question is, can I cancel the restore? And restart it via ethernet cable? It doesny list an option to cancel but can I just turn off by the power button or turn off time capsule?
Will Apple's external Superdrive work through a powered USB hub?
Or does the Superdrive need to be plugged directly into the MBA?
Are there any other USB devices that will only work directly plugged in?
I bought a Belkin powered USB hub and hooked my MacBook Air Superdrive to it and it won't work. I was under the impression it would in a powered USB HUB. Anyone share any experiences with me on this?

View 16 Replies View RelatedMy battery seems to have lost the plot. I can turn my machine on when running off the battery and it fires up as normal. Once it gets to my desktop everything is frozen. The arrow is always stuck in the top left corner and the only thing that works is the power button, but I can't even turn it off because I can't select switch off.
It works fine if I take the battery out and run off the adaptor but kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop.
A friend and I will be going to Europe in a few weeks. We both have iPhones and I was hoping to charge both of them using my Air so that I do not have to bother with buying extra power converters. I already have the UK and EU plugs for the Air adapter.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to find a good, solid powered-USB hub to use with my Macbook Pro. I tried the Belkin 7-port, which had good reviews, but it just stopped working after 2 weeks, and it was never powering self-powered USB hard drives properly (even though it was supposed to).
So I'd like some recommendations for a good USB hub that has sufficient power to use with self-powered USB hard drives and that won't slow down or stop working when i connect too many devices.
Like many others, I'm thinking of replacing my HDD with an SSD and replacing my optical drive with the original HDD. I plan on using the SSD as my boot volume and the HDD for storage. Part of the reason I am switching to an SSD is that I carry my laptop around quite a lot and don't feel confident that the HDD won't fail because of all the motion.
My question is: Can I leave the HDD powered off until I want to use it? Thus saving battery life and reducing the risk of HDD failure from being moved around too much. I would like to be able to mount the drive when I want to access the storage and unmount it when it is not in use. Is this possible?
