IMac :: How To Transfer Files To External Hard Drive

I have an IMAC and I am having problems transferring video files I download to my external hard drive. I had trouble playing the files at first because it was not readable with Quicktime. I downloaded VPN and it played with VPN. I don't want to save those files on my computer so I would like to transfer it to my external harddrive. When I try to drag it over, it won't let me drop it in. I am new to the MAC world. Is there a way to choose where it will save itself right before you download like there is on windows. I click on it and it does not prompt you, it just starts downloading.

OS X :: Cannot Transfer Files From Mac To External Hard Drive
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified". So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?

ITunes Mac :: Missing Files After Transfer To External Hard Drive?
I am running out of room on my mac and so needed to move my music onto an external drive need space for running Final Cut. I followed the instructions consolidating etc and everything seemed to have been fine. iTunes is running fine after entering my password.

So, I wanted to delete the old music files from my mac now that the music is all on the external. Just as a final check, I opened the finder windows for both the new music folder on the external and the old one on the mac. The new folder is showing 446 items - but the old folder is showing 483 items.

So I seem to have lost 37 music folders.

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files Off An External Hard Drive Formatted For Windows?
I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc. The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows. My mac will open it, but it is "read only." I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).

However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!

IMac :: Unable To Transfer From External Hard Drive
My new iMac is arriving tomorrow and I need to transfer everything over to it. I know about Migration Assistant, but I want to know if there will be any complications due to the data I have on an external hard drive.

Specifically, I currently have an older (white) iMac hooked up to two 2TB external hard drives. One if for backup but the other one has all my iPhoto and iTunes content on it, including about 1.5 TB of movies and TV shows that I have ripped. None of this material is on the computer's internal hard drive - it is all on the external hard drive.

Because my new iMac has a 2 TB internal hard drive, I want to transfer all the iPhoto and iTunes content currently on the external hard drives onto the internal hard drive of the new iMac. Will Migration Assistant handle this and will it be clear what I need to do?

How To Transfer Video File From An IMac To An External Hard Drive

IDVD (iLife 09/11) :: Moved Those Files From IMac Hard Drive To An External Drive?
I created a DVD, using iMovie and iDVD, ending up with 6 movies in the iDVD menu window. Then, I moved those files (images, iMovie events and projects) from my iMac hard drive to an external drive. Now when I open the DVD project, I'm told (of course) that "the following files could not be found" and 12 missing files (audio and video for each movie) are listed in a window. The window gives me the option to "find file." That's more than iMovie does, by the way.

So I select the first file, and bingo! it's restored---but populates all 6 windows in the iDVD menu. I figure I can select all 12 files from the "missing files" window by using the control, shift, option or option keys, but nope, only one. And, once I have restored that one file, I cannot get the "missing files" window to reappear when I close/reopen the DVD, so I can select another. My question is: how do I restore ALL those missing files? So my question is: how can I use the "missing

I have a hard drive enclosure, but I was wondering if when I install my 500GB hard drive, would I be able to use the enclosure to transfer files from my 250GB drive? I hope this was specific enough to get a clear response. If not, I'll try re-wording my question.

IMac Intel :: ITunes Files On An External Hard Drive Not Mounting?
I have all my iTunes files on an external hard drive (WD My Book 250GB). It will no longer mount meaning I can't get to any of my music, films etc.I have zapped my PRAM as well as looking for the drive with the system profiler (it shows up but with no mount point) as well as trying to repair permissions with disk utility but it says the drive is fine so the "repair" buttons are greyed out.

I did copy the "last backup" from my iTunes folder on my time machine disk (on the FW 400 port) onto my internal hard drive, but it didn't seem to contain all my stuff (specifically films & TV shows).

MacBook :: External Hard Drive Does Not Have Transfer Limits
I just bought a Western Digital 1TB My Book Essential Edition external hard drive. I have a lot of videos, stored as disk images, from my HD camcorder on my MacBook that I want to copy onto the external hard drive for storage and also transfer to my other MacBook. The problem is that this hard drive is setup so that it will not transfer any file over 4 GB. A lot of these disk images are over 4GB and thus will not transfer. Is there any way to reformat this external HD to a system that will allow transfer over the 4GB threshold? If so, can someone please explain the process to me in as much detail as possible? If not, can someone recommend an external HD that does not have transfer limits?

ITunes :: Best Way To Transfer Media To External Hard Drive?
I have a 3TB USB 2.0 "media" external hard drive attached to my iMac. I use it to store all itunes media only, since I have over 300 movies. I also have tv shows, music etc. I just got a new 2TB thunderbolt LaCie Big Disk external drive. I want to transfer all stuff in "media" USB hard drive to new thunderbolt drive. Reason for doing this, sometimes current USB "media" drive lags on responding when I come back to use itunes from sleep or inactivity. I'm thinking about just dragging all content from old drive to new drive, eject old drive, name new thunderbolt drive "media", and relaunch itunes. Would that work successfully? I'd like my itunes to remember my play count. If my content play count is lost, does iMatch remembers play count and once I update my iMatch with new thunderbolt drive installed, will my play count be updated to my itunes?

Software :: Unable Transfer Library To External Hard Drive?
I have looked at a ton of posts on this site and others and find similar problems but cant figure out what is wrong. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I have an Imac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo 3 gigs of ram. I have an Iphoto library that is 190gigs . I have been trying to transfer the library to an external 1 tb hard drive so I can get my computer to run normal again. When I try and transfer the Iphoto library to the external I get a really lame error code. The transfer will start perfect it will get to about 142 gigs complete then the message :"the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "iphoto library" could not be read or written. (error code -36). I have looked up the error code and it seems to be one of those codes that doesn't really tell you anything. At first I thought it was a problem with the external, maybe it was not formatted correctly. Then I tried with an alternate drive I had and the same thing. Just to make sure I took back the original drive. Re formatted the drive only one partition, and mac os extended journaled using GUID partition as suggested by many posts. So I don't believe it is the drive at all I can transfer other files no problem. I have not tried to transfer something as large, but everything else, photos, movies, ect seem to be no problem at all. I really do think now there is something wrong with the library but I don't know what to do. I would love to try and make a copy on the computer itself, but there is not enough room. I think I may need to rebuild the Iphoto library but do not want to lose everything.

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files From PC To External Drive?
I am going to get an MBP 17" in 1 month time (first Mac) and I would like to get an external hard drive for backup & media storage.

My media files are on a desktop PC and, as I am also about to move to a different country, it would be ideal for me to do the following:

1) get the external drive and transfer files from PC to the drive now

2) take it with me and connect it to MBP when I get the Mac

As mentioned, I have never owned a Mac and all the stuff I find on the internet relates to transferring files from PC to Mac. Is it possible to transfer those files to the Mac drive "in absence" of the MBP?

OS X Leopard :: Very Slow Data Transfer To USB 2.0 External Hard Drive?
I have Mac Pro with 10.5.8 OS X version. I bought a 1.5 TB external hard drive formated it to HFS+ and plubbed it in. Drive pops up OK, but when I start trasfering files the transfer speed is some thing like 10-15 Mbits/sec which is quite a lot below the theoretical 480 MBits/sec. I know you cannot reach that but 10-12 Mbits/sec seems very low.

ITunes Mac :: Library Transfer To Bigger External Hard Drive
I am upgrading from a G5 Quad (PowerPC) to an iMac Quad i7. My iTunes files (Movies, Music, TV Shows and Books) are on an external hard drive. At the same time that I upgrade to the new iMac, I want to transfer all my iTunes files to a bigger external hard drive. At the genius bar they don't recommend using Migration Assistant because of the PPC-To-Intel change. I don't mind doing this manually so long as all my music, movies etc., retain their metadata and all the graphics (covers, posters, etc.) show up on the new iMac when all is done.

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive With Fast File Transfer?
I am assuming firewire would be the quickest, what about the firewire 800 or w/e it is in the macbook pros though? Is USB 2.0 significantly slower than the firewire? I want to buy a external HDD that is around 500gb in size and can transfer over files just like my normal HDD is. 100% of the time that the MBP is home it will be attached to this. I want to put almost everything there is on my laptop over onto the external hard drive except for stuff I need (which then I'd just pull it onto the desktop) when I leave the house. I'm assuming the western digital 500gb passport essential is the best buy, but I don't know much about it at all. It's only USB 2.0, which sounds like the slowest option when you throw firewire in the search.

Intel Mac :: IPhoto Library Transfer To External Hard Drive Very Slow
I am transferring my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and it is agonizingly slow.

I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive.  The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours.  I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up.

When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster.  Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Transfer Large Files To External Drive
I need to transfer some large (about 18 gb) video files to an external drive to use on a Windows computer. The external drive is formatted for Windows, and all the small files I need shot over fine, but I need to get the large files too. Apple seems to have about a 6 gb limit on file size transfers to non-Time machine backups. I get a message:

the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0)

I've run into this before and always found this limitation pretty dumb, but I don't know the workaround. I tried downloading and installing some software sometime in the past, but it didn't work.
