MacBook Pro :: Startup Only From External Hd Possible
May 7, 2012
i have serious problems with the mb pro from my son, 13", late 2009.
since it didn't start i used an external hd as startup disc, it worked. i thought the internal hd is defect, so i changed it with an older one from this mac (120 gb internal, when i replaced it with a 500 gb i kept it as backup in the safe) to try, but now it doesn't boot from the internal hd, too. so the mac only starts from an external drive, no way to use an internal.

If I connect a external monitor and keyboard to my late 2011 Macbook Pro (running Lion) it starts up just fine. But if I try to start it up without these (or any other devices) attached, I get no display on the internal screen and the internal keyboard is ignored (the caps lock light doesn't light up when the key is pressed). However, I don't think it's a hardware issue, as a PRAM reset seems to work (I get the second chime) indicating that the keyboard is OK. And I get a second or so of grey screen before the screen goes black. I've tried resetting my SMC and my PRAM. The latter seemed to fix the problem once - but then it came back, and won't go away again this time. I've also tried starting in safe, single user, and verbose mode, but none of these seem to make any difference. I've been having some issues installing Windows (under both BootCamp and Parallels) but wouldn't have thought that these were related.

I am thinking about how to add extra storage to my macbook pro, and thinking that the simplest way would be to get a WD 2T and boot from that as a matter of course. I would use the internal drive for back-up. The reason for this is that the 1T internal is getting full. The other option is to replace the Super Drive (DVD/CD Drive) with a 750G, and have the dvd/cd drive external. What is better?

I had a bunch of photos stored on my digital camera that I wanted to upload onto my computer. Only I had a little under 2 GB of free space on my startup disk, which was not going to be enough, so I uploaded them to an iPhoto library I created on my external hard drive. The free space that Finder recognized on my startup disk dropped to around 1 GB during the time it took to upload the 1300 or so photos onto the external drive, which was slightly surprising in that it's never taken so short a time, but I restarted my computer and it went back to recognizing the right amount of free space, like it always has after restarting. Everything was working just as I expected.
However, when I edited about 1000 of those photos in iPhoto, somehow this ate up almost all of the hard drive space on my LAPTOP, not my external drive, and restarting my computer did absolutely no good. I am literally running on 13 MB of free space as I type this.
The photos are definitely in my external iPhoto library, not on my startup disk. I searched my startup for "IMG" (my camera names photos "img_###" to see if for some reason iPhoto was copying the pictures I edited to my laptop, but none of these new pictures came up. I even went into the files I'd accessed yesterday (it's past midnight here) to see if I could figure it out, but all the photos I clicked on were on the external disk. That iPhoto is copying the pictures I edit somewhere is the only possible solution I can think of. But whatever it is that is taking up all my free space, I can't find it.
Meanwhile, and similarly inexplicably, the copy of Cocktail I have downloaded is telling me that I am currently using only 71% of my available disk space, which uh, has basically never been true ... Cocktail has always told me that I'm using something depressing (yet accurate) like 93% of my available disk space.

Can Mac's be started up from external USB2 drives or is external startup limited to firewire only? I have several machines, IMac (all four flavors) Mac Book and Pro. I want to use Time Machine as the back to all of these devices but I hesitate because of this possible restriction.

I wasn't sure if it wouls be a bad idea if I wiped the interal hard drive while I'm booting from a recovery disk, then made a RAID 0 with the internal drive and my FW800 external drive. I'm nearing my max for the internal drive. I have a second FW400 drive backing up with Time Machine. I was hoping to just wipe, make the raid volume, and then restore from the Time Machine backup.
I guess even before that, my FW800 is not working in Lion. I reformatted while connected by USB, reset power management, and reset PRAM, but the firewire bus panics and takes out the Time Machine on FW400 as well. Is there a fix for this somewhere that I'm missing? I bought the FW800 drive for the above reason, only to run into a wall trying to make it work. I really don't want to do a RAID 0 with a USB connection.
I'm not going to try setting up the RAID 0 until I get the FW800 drive working reliably, but I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone.

6 month old MBP 15", been running 100% fine, plugged it into a projector the other day and it auto changed the screen resolution. I unplugged the device, went into settings and changed my screen resolution back to it's factory size as well as command & the minus key to make sure I wasn't zoomed in on anything.
I then did a system update for the following; Airport utility, Safari, Ricoh Printer, Digital Camera Raw, java, Itunes.
Restarted the computer as the updates had finished, then when turning back on the loading screen with the grey background, apple symbol and rotating loading symbol was zoomed in as much as the resolution would allow. So i restarted a couple more times, still the same thing - every time i turn the computer on the loading screen is massivly zoomed in, once it's done loading and moves to the log in screen it is fine.
I've tried plugging into the projecter again and editing my settings, that did nothing. It's like because i updated while the settings where wonky it's saved it somehow?

My brother's iBook G4 (I think it's a 2003 model) has a problem with the screen. When the computer is turned on, the screen stays black, although the backlight is on (the apple glows). Sometimes, on start up, the screen works normally for a random amount of time before going fuzzy and then black again.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it likely to be a problem with the hardware in the actual computer, or just the screen? Or is it a software thing?

Besides the obvious fact that one is portable and the other is not. Does the portable one have an increased chance of failing due to it being moved around a lot more?If not, then why don't everyone just get a portable external hdd to back up their data?Just curious as I look into getting a hdd soon to back up my data using time machine.

A few months ago I bought the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive adapter. I was going to purchase my first laptop and knew there would be drives I could take from my G4. This was my first real experience with USB 2.0 and boy do I hate it. I do mostly video editing and I very regularly transfer huge amounts of data from drive to drive. USB 2.0 waaaaay too slow compared to what I was used to. Hours to transfer 40Gbs. I now regret not getting a FireWire enclosure. How does everyone feel about those HDD docks that take SATA drives? To me it seems very economical. I understand a smaller bus powered drive would be good for travel because a dock or larger drive needs a power source.

i'm hoping someone can help me out on this little problemmy usual set up is a pair of speakers connected with jacks via an m-audio usb audio interface, with an external monitor connected via mini-dvi to dvi.now for some reason my audio interface has randomly broken (on a side note, could a power cut have somehow broken a usb peripheral connected to my macbook whilst it was asleep?) so i've hooked up my speakers to the line out to rca. Now for some reason, when i plug the mini dvi connector into my macbook i get an incredible amount of hum. not just a little, alot!

My mac book has been starting by itself since last year. I`ve checked saving energy program (I had none). I upgraded my OS and it sopped for a while. But now, it re started and worse three times a day - so I can`t solve the problem by programing it to shut down. I`ve tried to unistall a couple of things but it just made it worse, because now when I find it turned on there`s a message of failure in the initialization folder. I always check on the console to see what is going on. Although I don't really understand apple's commands it seems that there's something to do with finding virusbarriers. Why? I don't think I have any anti virus! I'm kind of tired of exploring things. Should I re-install my OS and everything else? Any solutions? Because reading other people's experience with that was really demotivating (they even mentioned Apple's not having any registered complaints about it)

I just installed Boot Camp on my 15' MBP. I'm not all too thrilled that the MBP will boot up the default OS so I'm wondering if there any option/preference that will allow me to select which OS to boot every time I start up my computer? On my windows PC I had XP and 7 installed and I had the option to select which one to boot whenever I started up my laptop. Is there anything like this for a Mac? I checked the Boot Camp control panel and I didn't see any settings in there for this.

My Macbook Pro battery had run down (it does quite a bit) so I rebooted with the power inserted.
I get a frozen screen saver which is normal, while the progress bar finds it feet back on power.
However this time, I had the frozen screen saver, and a continuous 3 beeps which I've never had before in a loop? I then re-pressed the power switch on the Macbook and it rebooted fine and seems ok.
This i7 is coming up to its first year (which I think is covered by Apple?) and I *think* this maybe a memory issue? If it is, and my Mac is covered, then by a sheer stroke of luck, I decided to get Apple to fit the 8GB memory at the time of purchase (bad I know! and I don't usually do that) BUT that would mean that Apple fitted the memory upgrade and I haven't touched anything myself.
I then booted up this morning with a full battery and the boot up took a lot longer than normal - maybe around 3 minutes on the spinning logo, and then finally booted - are these all worrying signs?

I am coming from a PC world and I am starting to get frustrated with this problem. I have had my Macbook Pro 15in for about a year. It is an early 2011. For the past two months I have been having the 3 beeps on start up. I have been to the genius bar about 6 times already. They have replaced my RAM twice, replaced my logic board and finally replaced my hard drive. It is STILL doing it. I don't know what else I should do. Please any more suggestions the next time I go to the genius bar?
