MacBook Pro :: Running Slow And It Is Starting To Freeze Up
Aug 23, 2014
My Macbook Pro has been running slow...I inherited it from another coworker (we are contractors so we are responsible for them not the company)...the spinning colorful ball icon seems to run on and off on different screens every day..what I can delete or programs to run?
Here is the Etre Report:Â

Well, here is my situation. About a few months ago my computer was steadily starting to slow down and freeze everyone once in awhile, then it started to get worse and finally I couldn't even get past the blue loading screen during startup. I figured this was due to some movies I downloaded and even though it is rare I may have got a virus. So I reformatted and lost all my data. The computer worked for a few months until this past week when I was in the hospital of all times to start acting up again. However, this time I barely had anything on it and it started to do the same thing again but much quicker though the process. Within two days I couldn't get past the blue loading screen.
I called apple, and they had me go through a bunch of restarts and all there trouble shooting processes. The computers hardware checked out perfect and we tried to delete some files to correct a software problem, but that didn't work either. So, his next option was to have me completely reformat once again to fix the problem. So, I reformatted once again, lost all my data once again and now it is doing it again the very next day.The MacBook is less than a year old and I purchased AppleCare with it. However, I was wondering since they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it what are they going to do since they don't know what is wrong?
If they give me a refurbished one, that would most likely mean that Im getting an older one because I purchases this laptop in September last year right before the new models came out so this is one of the very last models that were shipped. Do you think that they might give me a new model if I ask? I don't want to deal with a refurbished model when I spent this kind of money and on top of that bought AppleCare for another $350.
When I started my computer this evening, it froze immediately after starting up. (I have had three start up items for over a year: Dashboard, iTunes, and Chrome). Then after I unplugged it and removed the battery to restart it (nothing else would work), it was extremely slow to restart. I had to then Option-Command-Escape out of each progrma that starts up, and when I started Chrome again, it was very slow. After some time, it started to pick up speed again, like starting a car engine on a cold winter morning. Â
I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage. The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my
MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.Â
i have been using macbook pro since 2 years but after Apple has Developed The new operating system "Lion" i have upgraded it from app store, after that my macbook pro is startin' up and shutting down too slow, with the previous os was too FAST!, i tried with some softwares to clean up logs and tried to fix it myself, but i couldn't.. Â
hardware:Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB  may i know where is the problem? or should i format my mac and downgrade to the previous operating system!?Â
I bought a new macbook pro a few months ago and the fan starts running the second I open it and keeps running until i close it, the bottom of my mac also gets really hot and the fan does not seem to be helping it cool down. Is this normal?
I edit using Lightroom and Photoshop and I'm having an issue while editing. After editing around 8-10 photos in Photoshop the computer starts running unbelievably slow. After each 8-10 photos I have to close down everything and reboot. Even the reboot process is super slow as I have to force quit each application usually 1-2 times to get it to close. Is this normal? I have a 2011 17" with 2.2 GHZ i7 with 8GB ram. Is there any setting that I can change or be aware of.
We've had a Macbook now for about 18 months - no problems. However, last night it was very slow in starting-up and then we found it impossible to move any icons around the screen (click+drag). We have just five small folders on the desktop.
Although 'hiding' is 'on', the dock has also disappeared completely and settings for the dock cannot be changed under preferences.
The Macbook won't turn off under 'shut-down', we have to shut-down by holding pressing 'on' button.
iMac 27 late 2009 freeze while is working. Nothing works on computer even when a video is playing. I have a 12 GB of RAM and 502 GB free disk space. I checked disk utility and CPU is working fine. I don't know why the iMac is freezing with so much space.
My MacBookPro is running a tad slow on start up lately. Its taking a fair bit longer to display the blue screen and my password. Safari and Mail are the only items that I have set to launch on signing in. I have removed extra fonts and languages also turned magnification off to speed things up, but its mainly the start up thats just a bit slower than usual.
My iMac has been running very very slowly for about 2 weeks. I am talking very very slowly. It seems to be processing time. I will be in word, move the cursor and it will take a few seconds to get there. Sometimes I have to wait a minute after I click on something for the cursor to catch up, and (hate to say it) even 2 minutes. That's like a millennium in Mac time.
my 4 year old IMac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb running 10.7.3 has been running really slow since I installed photoshop CS4 and upgraded to lion ( I have 137gb of free space on hard drive) I mean it wont quit out of photoshop I always have to do a force quit and most applications run really slow. Do I need a new computer , what should I go for to have a smooth running mac?Was thinking of a new IMac 27-inch: 2.7GHz with 4gb memory.Â
I've seen so many posts about this, but with the limited time I have between system freezes, in desperation I come here. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on desktop IMac. I have plenty of memory, but don't know how to check the hard disk space (I'm an ubernoob). I've run a couple of the mac maintenance programs still to no avail. I get intermittent SBBOD where NOTHING responds and have to do a hard reboot. Doesn't matter what applications are up, as even startup is very slow when in SBBOD mode. Rebooting, then, doesn't resolve the issue. It runs fine when the SBBOD is not present.
1. When closing the lid or pressing the power button the computer freezes, the fans start spinning fast it stays like that until it drains the battery. This happens every time.
2. Start-up times are very long, like 3 or 4 minutes. This also happens every time.
3. Now after a fresh snow leopard install it doesn't even start up completely, as it stays showing a light blue background and I can hear the music of the introductory animation.
4. Also, the keyboard is unresponsive at the login screen, but the mouse cursor moves and the display goes to sleep normally. Clicking anywhere with the mouse also produces no effect.
5. It seems to work OK in safe mode.
The macbook worked ok with the factory installed Tiger. The SL DVD is OK, as its installation has been tested on another Mac. The machine's advanced hardware test passed successfully. Resetting Pram and SMC did not solve the problem.
I just installed VM Fusion 3.0, it is really much faster running Windows Vista with it.
Anyway, my main issue is, when I opened Activity Monitor, I realized that VMF 3.0 runs in the background when the computer start, is there anyway to totally shut it off if I am not using it?
Also, on the top right tool bar, there is a "bi-head" arrow of VMF 3.0, how to get rid of it?
I have a problem with my iMac which is running OSX 10.8.5. I think the easiest way to explain this would be to just give a simple example. For example let's say I have Excel and Word both open. I shut them both down. Then I completely shut down my computer. Power off. I go to bed. Next morning I boot up and guess what? Word and Excel are now running again, just as if I had never shut them them down.
recently I bought WD6400AAKS hard drive. I made to partitions (1st for OS and applications, 2nd one for photo files). I also did fresh OS install and loaded basic applications. Strangely I didn't notice any speed boost while booting and to be honest I feel like all applications (photoshop for example) are also starting much slower than on original hdd.
Is there any way to test hard drive if it performs as it should be? I also have 2 more older drives installed. is it possible that one of them would slow the system down?
I have a macbook pro and have recently noticed that when initially loading any of, google chrome, firefox or safari it takes a very long time for the internet to load the webpages.
It says that there is a full wireless connection but will not load the webpage.
Once the webpage has finally loaded after about a minute, subsequent browsing is as fast as can be expected upon my broadband connection, loading pages in <1s.
However the problem reappears whenever I open a new window, or anything else that might use the internet such as the app store, itunes or apple software update.Â
I have a late 2009 MacBook Pro 17" C2D 2.93, 4gb ram 320gb 7200rpm hard drive . I'm a graphic designer running CS5 Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign etc working on large (500mb) PSD files with lots of layers.Iv'e recently found my beach ball spinning a lot and program switching very sluggish, safari again very slow, finder much spinning ball. When streaming music as well spotify, soundcloud finding that when i'm doing anything processor intensive in Photoshop I'm hearing pops and very small sound drops.
I bought a brand new MacBook Pro in December 2011.
I have so far had no problems, using it everyday for work. I do not use a lot of programs or take up a lot of memory. I currently have 413GB free of 499GB and have hardly any apps running. My MacBook pro is now running extremely slow. It takes ages to load a web page, to open Word and even to start a new line in an email!
I am familiar with Windows and PC's but when it comes to Mac's, this is my first, and I am unsure of why this could be happening!Â

I have this Macbook (2006) with Mac OS X 10.4.11 Intel and 2GB of RAM. A couple of weeks ago it started runnung really slow to the point that i couldn't even click something. I reinstalled Mac OS X and upgraded to 10.4.11. and it worked perfectly fine!!! but a few days later it started slowing down again. 1
A couple of months ago I had my hard drive replaced on my 2009 MacBook. After that it seemed to be working fine for a while. But in the last couple of weeks it seems to be running slow again. I am getting a lot of pinwheels and I am not doing anything too sophisticated (ie I'm not running bunch of programs at once or anything). Is there something I can do to improve the way it's running? Should I restore from Time Machine back say a month ago?
My 2014 21" iMac powers itself down after about 10 seconds while trying to startup in safe boot mode. I'm not even sure why it is trying to start in safe boot mode. I shut it down after a power outage while plugged into an APS UPS. I'm guessing that since I interrupted the auto shutdown it is restarting in safe boot mode. Either way, I get a grey screen with a big apple and a progress bar. The progress bar gets to about a tenth full and the power just shuts off.Â
I've tried starting up while holding the alt key to select the Macintosh HD. The same thing happens.
I've messed up my MacBook and it's now running really slowly (even just clicking on icons, going into folders and suchlike) and I need to find out the best way to sort out the following issue:
I wanted to back up my pictures and (now realise, foolishly) moved them from iPhoto to my desktop so I could transfer it to an external hard drive. It was hanging and had the spinning beachball. This was 7 days ago; it looks like it's done it and is now running very slowly, I know it's lagging because the clocks shows it is sometimes 10 minutes slow and it's whirring and doing something.
I had unplugged the hard drive in case it was slow due to that and from researching other forums for advice I have been able to check the Activity Monitor - the CPU is fine but the disk space is almost zilch (all blue and no green). I now want to delete the pics off my desktop as I'm sure this is the root of the problem. Is there a simple/easy way or do I really have to be patient, delete and trash them one by one?
As you can tell I am not a full on techie but understand simple instruction, so please if you can help me resolve this, I'd be very grateful.
BSD Name:disk0s3It's long in the tooth now I know, but I've never had it crash and am loathe to upgrade simply for the sake of it, but recently it's had growing problems that I'd love to hear some advice on. It's been running hotter and hotter every year, and whilst I live in the outback it never used to singe my lap the way it does now. I installed Leopard a few months ago and realise that a new OS can have it working harder, but even since then it's been getting worse and worse with greatly shortened battery life too. During the day I've taken to plonking it upon one of those squishy icepacks with a teatowel around it to keep it cool....................
I have a 2007 Santa Rose MBP and it has started to run very slow during the bootup and actual use of it. Here is how the bootup goes:
I turn it on and get the bong sound and a full white screen. In about 10 seconds I get the Apple log and in about another 10 seconds the circle that rotates as it boots up.
Then at about 2 minutes it changes color to a light blue color with the pointer on the screen. Then in about another 10 seconds changes to a darker shade of blue. At a total of 3 mins and 40 secs I then get the desktop with the space type background and in a couple more seconds the Mac OS X login screen. It takes around a minute until I am able to type anything. For awhile before that time I can type I get the beachball.
Here are the details of what I recently did: I had a 250GB hard drive in my MBP running the newest version of Leopard. I was down to around 50GB free so I purchased a 640GB hard drive. I also was due to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I had an external USB enclosure that I could temporarily use. What I did is put the 640GB hard drive in that external enclosure and formatted it with the GUID partition table. I then used SuperDuper to mirror my internal hard drive to the external hard drive. I have a lot of programs installed and a lot data on my hard drive so didn't want to lose any of this.
Once the mirroring of my internal hard drive was completed to my external 640GB hard drive I then booted from that drive (using it externally and selecting option at bootup). Things seemed to run fine with no issues. I then after booting up from this external hard drive did a Snow Leopard upgrade to this external hard drive. Once again this external hard drive appeared to run perfectly normal.
After things seemed to be okay I then opened up the MBP and swapped hard drives so the 640GB drive was my new internal HD. I then booted and once again I used it some and things appeared to work normally.
After this later in the evening I installed two programs, Final Cut Studio 3 and Logic Studio 9. As far as I can remember my computer was acting a little odd and after a reboot that is when all the above issues started.
As far as I can tell this never started until those two installs. Is it a chance I didn't try it out enough but I remember even with the HD being external USB my system appeared to run faster than ever. I even think the program didn't start with Final Cut Studio but started with Logic Studio 9
Any idea of what caused this? Even after my computer running it's VERY slow to the point of being almost unusable. For example if I open Word it takes 3 minutes or so to open. Almost any action causes the beachball to appear.
After looking at the Apple site I did both a PRAM erase (using Command Option P and N) and also a SMC reset by removing the battery and power cord and pressing the power button for over 5 seconds and neither fixed it.
I opened up Disk Utility and did a Verify Permission and got the following information:
Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x. Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired.
