MacBook Pro :: Not Sleeping Or Hibernating - Simply Power Off When Close Lid?

Jun 25, 2014

When I close the lid to my mid-2009 13in. MBP, it powers off. It is not sleeping or hibernating. When I open it, I must press the power button to boot up the computer again. This does not happen when the charger is plugged in. I have reset the SMC and PRAM.

MacBook Pro :: Its Not Sleeping On Lid Close?

Jun 19, 2012

I'm having a strange problem with my MacBook Pro. I just began using it with a second display (with the lid open, of course), and ever since I started doing that, my laptop will intermittently not sleep when I close the lid (while it's disconnected from the display). What happens is that I close the lid and the Apple logo becomes dark, indicating that the display is off. The white light on the front stays on, however, and then, suddenly the Apple logo on the lid will light up again. After this, one of two things can happen. Most of the time, the screen and the computer both go to sleep after about 30-45 seconds. Sometimes, however, it seems to get stuck with both the display and computer on. This concerns me because I travel a lot, and I worry that the computer will overheat in the bag if I put it in while it hasn't gone to sleep.

MacBook Pro :: Non-retina Is Not Hibernating When Stored It

Jun 30, 2014

I've noticed my macbook pro mid 2012, non-retina, is not hibernating when I stored it on a nice little sleeve. I didn't want to worry about turning it off, I just wanted to close the lid and if I didn't open it after 1 hour, it should hibernate to save power. Is it because I set my SSD to never sleep, on power management?

OS X :: Reformatting Mac - Can I Simply Use The 10.5 CD?

Feb 22, 2009

I have never reformatted a mac as of yet so I'm not really sure how to go about it.

I've had my Powerbook G4 for around 4-5 years and I simply have NO CLUE where all the discs are that came with it. The other day I just upgraded to Leopard so I was wondering if it possible for me to reformatted the HD by using only that Leopard install disc?

OS X :: Can I Simply Image My PC And Copy It To My Mac?

Oct 18, 2009

So I have a Dell PC that I have used for a year and a half and also just got my first Mac. I see they have this Boot Camp where you can run Windows on the Mac.

How exactly do I get my existing system ported over to the Mac? Or do I have to do a fresh Windows install? My Dell had Vista pre-installed on it so I'd have to see if I have the Dell backup CDs/DVDs. I do nightly backups of my Dell using Acronis True Image...can I somehow just restore that image right onto my Mac?

I wish I could completely flip over to Mac, but due to some drawing and architecture programs on Windows, I can't. I know I also could just have two separate computers, but I'd really rather consolidate to one.

OS X :: SL Disc Not Readable - Simply Ejected

Jul 11, 2010

I want to completely reinstall my SL onto my MBP just to have a fresh start and 0 out my hard drive. I've already backed up all my important files and everything I need, but when I put in my SL disc it tries to read it and then just kicks it out of the drive without ever showing up on my laptop. It is not the disc I used when I upgraded my MBP from 10.5 to 10.6 though because I misplaced and cannot find that copy, but I am using a friends copy (I don't think this is the problem). I know my drive should read it because it reads every other CD I put into it and it shows up on my friends MacBook as well.

Software :: Is It Safe To Simply Reinstall Leopard?

Apr 7, 2009

I'm a PC guy being asked to help a Mac-owning friend. Her G5 running Leopard is acting very squirrely: iTunes keeps forgetting its tunes and complaining about damaged libraries (even after a uninstalling the old and installing the newest version); Photoshop crashes when scrolling through a folder of pictures (I moved them to a different drive and that solved it, but...), and other odd behaviors. She messed up the configuration of TimeMachine a while back and says lots of stuff seemed to go wrong after that. She has 2 internal drives and I noticed that some of her apps, like Quicken, appear to be installed on the second drive. Data files appear to be strewn about everywhere.

Her fellow Mac friends said the system needs the OS re-installed. On a PC the best approach is to reformat the drive and do a clean install. Is this advisable on a Mac -- especially this one?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Simply Share Address Book?

Apr 18, 2012

I want to share all my contacts with my wife so we don't have to reenter or add them all separately with vcards.

There used to be a way to just share my address book with someone, but now that seems to be gone.

I've looked around a bit and so far the only thing I am seeing is where this is done through some server set up, which is way overkill for what we want to do.

I just want to be able to share my entire contact list/address book.

I tried exporting my address book, and then on importing to hers, I am informed that it will REPLACE everything in her current address book.  Not what we want.

MacBook Air :: How Long Does Your AIR Last While Sleeping?

I am a new MBA Owner, not even a week only yet but like everyone I'm confused how I lived before without this thing, it goes everywhere with me! My post pertains to power management. I have been taking the AIR with me everywhere but just closing the lid and stowing it instead of turning the machine off. My question is how long will the AIR last in Standby mode? I understand it depends on how much you use it on a daily basis but do some users charge it in the morning and just pop it open throughout the day like a cell phone? Do some users actually turn the machine off each time?

MacBook Pro :: Not Sleeping On Lid Closure

Aug 13, 2009

I have a 2.2 15.4" MBP which will not sleep upon closure of the lid as of today. I just picked it up today from the Apple store where the full top was replaced due to a display problem. Searching here and on other forums, I found a number of people with this symptom, but with different causes. The computer sleeps normally when set from the apple menu. I tried resetting the PRAM. no change. I ran a small magnet along the right side of the screen with no effect. When I run the magnet down the right side of the computer, the computer sleeps when the magnet passes around the bottom of the speaker grill and awakens when I remove the magnet. It would seem that the sensor in the base is functioning. Is the top only a magnet? How likely that there could be no magnet or a misaligned magnet in the the top panel? Compounding the issue is that I had replaced the hard drive after I bought the computer, so when I returned it for service I put the original back in. When I picked up the computer I turned it on and off to check it out. Then I reinstalled the larger drive. It was only after this that I experienced the sleep issue, however I never tested the sleep when I picked it up from the store. My thought is that since running the magnet along the bottom case causes the computer to sleep that my opening the case for the hard drive exchange isn't the problem, unless it's possible that the reed can move in the bottom case and is misaligned there.....

MacBook Pro :: MBP Not Sleeping After Inactivity?

Sep 12, 2009

Noticed that my new MBP with 10.6.1 wasn't going to "sleep" after the time specified in System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep. Closing the lid or choosing 'sleep' from the apple menu worked fine. After playing with it a while, I _think_ I might have narrowed down the issue:

First, a couple of questions to see if the problem I'm seeing is only my own, or a common issue.

If you are having the problem, is your MBP unibody? with SD slot or expresscard slot?

Are you using the Apple factory HDD or an aftermarket one?

How I fixed the issue: I had the option selected on the same preference pane to "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible." If I unchecked this item, the machine would sleep after the specified time of inactivity (Actually, it would take about 30 seconds longer while the machine wrote the memory contents to the HDD.)

If you had the problem, does this fix it for you? If you did NOT have the problem, does checking this box create the problem for you?

MacBook Air :: Shutting Down Instead Of Sleeping - OS X 10.9.4

Sep 2, 2014

I am running the Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) and have a macbook air, 13 inch, mid 2012.

I am in no way an advanced user of this computer only used for browsing internet and some college work

Recently i have noticed a small niggling problem, that my mac is shutting down when left idle for a time, instead of going to sleep like it always used to do.

Now when i come back from being away i have to restart it up and at times have lost windows ive been working on.

I tried to alter some of the settings in the Power saving option but it doesnt have anything related to the shutting down of the computer. I used to be able to close the lid and it went to sleep but  now i think its shutting the laptop down too.

Obviously the quick start up time on the mac, and the option to put it to sleep means this isnt a massive deal but i was just wondering how to fix?

Applications :: Creating A Virtual Drive (not Simply Mounting)?

May 28, 2010

I've been scouring Google for a while trying to find a way to do this, but to no avail. I have a playstation emulator on my mac and am attempting to mount an iso of a game to play it. (As a legal sidenote, I do legally own the game and ripped the iso myself from the original disc, so there shouldn't be any issues with that -- I just don't want to have to use the cd and keep it with me, etc.).

I have been able to get a perfect .iso, .dmg, and a folder containing the files. The only thing I can't manage to do is mount it in such a way that the emulator will see it as a disc and not a mounted image. That is, the typical Disk Utility kind of mounting. I have tried it with Roxio Toast versions 7 and 10 (10 is the latest, but I had heard that 7 mounts it in a unique way) to no avail.

There is an old program called Virtual CD-RW ([URL]), but the application won't even open when I downloaded the demo version (double-click/selecting "open" simply didn't have any response at all). However, the kind of language used to describe it seem to be what I am looking for: manipulating kernels in such a way that other applications see it as an actual, physical cd-drive.

Assuming I don't have any more luck with Virtual CD-RW (still trying though), is there any other program/OS way to accomplish this?
