MacBook Pro :: Maximizing Applications In A Small SSD Space?
Oct 22, 2009
So, I need a new SSD for my late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro cause apparently the G.skill Titan epic fails working with the unibodies *sadness*.
The Titan I have is a 256GB SSD. Like most people, I've been looking at OCZ (which some say is the best and their performance doesn't drop too much which I didn't think was possible until trim) or the Intel one (anandtech's very thorough article recommends it, and so do many).
Unfortunately, the Intel SSD only has 160GB (though much easier on the wallet than the 250GB Vertex).
Add to that, I'm a video and audio editor as well as gamer >_< and here I've heard of people happy with 80GB and less!
If I were to get the Intel, this would be the first time I'd have to split files. For example, Final Cut Studio takes up 50 GB, but I've read that 47 of those GB you can move onto an external hard drive.
How else would I go about splitting and basically cramming Final Cut Studio, Logic Studio, Adobe Production Premium, Windows 7 (by the time I get the SSD, it would have already released), iLife '09, and a whole slew of high space games such as Neverwinter Nights 2 and both expansions, Oblivion, Spore, Fallout 3, CS:S, and DoD:S with an ample amount of room?
Or would I have to switch out games and have them in one at a time?
Or would I just have to pay 75% more and get the 250GB?

Is it possible to maximize the workspace for all application i.e. Safari browser or MS Word etc to occupy the whole 'screen' area other than to drag the bottom corner or clicking the 'Green' maximize button?

First, I understand that the green button maximizes the window to fit the contents. Here is my problem...
Word maximizes the window as though the view is set to 100%. When I use Word, however, I always have the view set to 125%. So, when I maximize the window, it acts as though the view is set to 100% and some text gets cut off.
I hope that made sense - It's really more of an annoyance than anything.
Also, why does the green button maximize to full screen for some apps (e.g. firefox), but not others? I swear it has a mind of its own!

I downloaded something last year that lets me maximise the window I'm looking at, but can't remember what it was or where it came from. Does anyone know? Reason is that my OH's login doesn't let her maximise like this - you have to drag the corner of the window to the biggest size.

As I previously outlined in my previous thread I will be a freshman in college and I am getting a MBP. I will be majoring in Office Administration but I might transfer to Computer Information Systems. Is 13" really that small that it is bad to run multiple applications? I mean, compared to Acer 10" laptops I think 13" shouldnt really be a problem. I'm not thinking about buying a 15" because I think they are overpriced and I will mostly use it to run MS Office apps, social networking, surfing the web & working in Photoshop. Are those extra 2" really such a big issue? I'm already paying almost $1300 including tax, so why waste almost $700 more including tax for 2" extra? That sounds ridiculous, especially if you have to work hard to save that money.

I just bought a 13" MBP which I know has some clever battery technology built in. I also know that the overall life of some rechargeable batteries is lengthened by ensuring they are regularly fully discharged and recharged instead of keeping them charged to a maximum at all times. Does anyone know whether the overall life of the MCP's innovative battery is maximized by adopting the same policy?

I have a MacBook and my strategy is to keep it plugged in as much as possible to avoid using charge cycles. If I use it down to 50%, then get home, I'll plug it in so I've only used half a cycle. Then when I'm just using it around the house, I try to keep it plugged in.
My friend has a completely different strategy. At the Apple Store, one of the salesmen told him that he should use it down to almost nothing and then charge it back up again. He would never plug it in at 50%, but wait until it is 10% or less. He gave me this analogy: if you have a bottle of milk in the refrigerator and you have a cow outside, you refill the bottle when it is empty. If you keep refilling the bottle when it is only half empty, that milk is going to go bad. He really doesn't understand how it works himself, but said something about the battery's memory? I never imagined that a battery would have its own little memory or something, but now that he mentioned it, it does seem reasonable.

I know - or think I recall - that there was a user's tips article on maximizing battery life. When I'm outdoors with my MBP, I always have Photoshop CS6, InDesign CS6, Illustrator CS6, Acrobat Pro X, Parallels Desktop, MS Word and maybe a few 'little' apps running. I need these to get my projects done. I can usually get about 3 1/2 hours out of my battery but if I could get 5, I'd be happy.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for the most current (at least 2011) user tip on the topic?
Info:
Mac OS X (10.7.4), 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD

We're hunting for a small printer for a crowded office space. There's a not much desk space or shelf space.
Only need something to print. No scanning, faxing or other functions! Hoping we can get Canon that is compatible with the inkjet 40 and 41 cartridges as we already have a printer that uses those.
Requirements:
Text documents
Photo printing

My MBA gives out squeaking sound around bass beats. Doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen, it irritates me. When I listen to the same song on the iphone, I get a very clear sound. Can anyone do this for me? Can you listen to "Speak to me/Breathe" by Pink Floyd on your headphones / earphones if you have that track? Along with the first few heartbeats, I hear squeaking noises. Do you hear anything like that?
This squeaking noise could also happen sometimes when I am minimizing / maximizing windows, or doing something processor intensive.

When I save a screen shot and email it... it comes out on the other end as a small image (thumbnail?). There has got to be something I'm missing in the setup or preferences... but why aren't my attachments full size?

Every time on Messenger, or another window I right click to get to a certain conversation, it never comes up when I want it to... it just simply goes to the first conversation I opened - and then when I minimize all the windows, after a few seconds it slides out from the side.

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, when a new message arrives in my in box, Mail maximizes from the dock and takes up the whole screen interrupting whatever I'm working on. This is very annoying! I've looked through help and the preference menus, but I cannot find a way to shut this off.

So I got a bit surprised after I installed iTunes 10 that I can't adjust the artwork in list view bigger! Anyone else noticed this? In iTunes 9 you could just drag the bar besides the artwork and it would increase as much as you liked. Now if you click on Album by artist you can choose artwork small - medium - large, but it's not big enough!

many times I receive pictures that won't show up and I only get a small blue box with a question mark inside. Is the problem the format of the pictures or some other error? I know that on a PC I would get a small red box at times when something wouldn't load properly. Do I need some plugin or is the problem elsewhere?

We run a small travel company, and are trying to create a relational database or something that will help with producing an itinerary for quotes/invoices and manage the bookings (i.e.: paid, confirmed etc). I have the design all mapped out on a lovely piece of paper, and I know exactly what needs to happen. However, I can't get this into computer speak! SQL etc., are beyond me, but am pretty nifty on most Office type applications. Initially the plan was MS Access... but this can't be used on a Mac...
Then I tried Open Office Base, but am finding it very different to Access - not sure if the limitations are within Base or within my knowledge (I am trying to learn). Filemaker may be an option, but it looks as if it may get a bit expensive as we would probably need Advanced (Pro 10 looks a bit basic?) - and hence why I used OOBase.

I am creating a digital album booklet for a band I manage, basically I took a high res photo and type the lyrics of each song over it, then added additional pics, the booklet is roughly 33 pics. I am using Photoshop and saving each file as a PDF, I then plan on combining them all at once. I know there has to be a better way to get this done. Right now each photo is roughly 3.3mb, that's way too big! How do I get the size down?

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

This is a pretty basic question. iDVD
I have dual layer DVDs and want to burn the same small movie on both layers, one would be full screen, the other wide screen so the viewer can choose.
Is this possible? Is it just a matter of burning one movie at a time; will the comp recognize which layer is empty after the first burn?

I currently have a Belkin wireless-N router (the cheapest one I could find, regrettably) so that I can have wifi in my dorm room, but this router isn't cutting it anymore. I've given the password to a couple of my friends, but their favorite things to do while on my network are Skype, Hulu, and ESPN streaming--leaving me with an unreliable, slow wireless connection. To help with this problem, I want to buy a Time Capsule--I'm really looking forward to using its wireless backup and printer sharing features. My first question is, though, will a Time Capsule be able to handle multiple bandwidth-hogging wireless connections faster and more reliably than my cheapo Belkin router, or will it also choke? (I know for a fact that the problem isn't my university's network, because I get blazing fast download and upload speeds via Ethernet.)
