Applications :: Dual Layer DVDs And Want To Burn The Same Small Movie On Both Layers?
Oct 4, 2009
This is a pretty basic question. iDVD
I have dual layer DVDs and want to burn the same small movie on both layers, one would be full screen, the other wide screen so the viewer can choose.
Is this possible? Is it just a matter of burning one movie at a time; will the comp recognize which layer is empty after the first burn?

copying DVD's. When I had a PC, I used to use DVD shrink to convert large Dual layer DVDs down to sizes that would fit on a single layer DVD. I downloaded mac the ripper and it works, but it does not downsize DVD's.

I have been trying to burn a .cdr file to a dual layer dvd using Disk Utility. I got it to work once, but I tried four times. I think that it must be very sensitive or something, because I can't figure out any other factor that affects it.
Has anybody else run into this problem, and if so, what's your solution? I think it may have to do with vibrations of the disk drive or something, but I would be lying if I said I knew that for sure...

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.
I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX. I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.
Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..
Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.
So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.
Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external) ...

So my super drive is not able to write double layer dvd's, even though it's supposed to, as confirmed by the System Profiler. I'm using the right kind of blanks (DVD+R DL), tried different brands, and it always just stops with a "media writer error" right away. It recognizes them as writable disks when I insert them, but simply refuses to actually write.
It's the 17" G5 iSight model. Is there an easier way to fix this than to send the whole thing to Apple to have the drive replaced? Also, how much does it run for Apple to install a new super drive for me?

My Imac has recently began to show some problems with Dual layers DVDs that I did not experience before. It doesn't burn any DVD9 anymore. Even worse, I can not play any DVD9 I'd burnt on the same drive before, because they are constantly ejected, while before that (till 1-2 months ago) I had no problem with the same discs. With retail dvds or dvd5s (+R or -R). Does it mean that my DVD drive has become defective?

I downloaded a TV series as a package.
It is .AVI, and I had to use Perian to view it in QuitckTime.. no biggie.
However when I went to burn it to a CD I gave BURN a shot. It had to convert the files in order to be able to create a DVD player compatible DVD.
This process was taking forever...... Is this normal with any program?
What about using iDVD or other DVD making software?? Would it be any quicker at converting?
Open to suggestions....

Alright, I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for by searching so I figured I'd ask. I think it should be fairly simple.
I have a pair of DVD's that were made a few years back. They contain a couple hours of footage from an event. Too much to put on one single layer DVD so it got split over 2.
What I'd like to do is copy both intact DVDs. But I much prefer now at this time to do this on one dual layer DVD for simplicity. All I have is the two DVD's which have simple menus and the footage. Ideally, I would like to be able to keep everything, and maybe put one simple menu on top to select between part 1 and part 2.
So what are my options? I do have FCS1 and the latest iLife setup. Not much more. I just don't know the best way to set up and burn this project.

Thats basically the problem in a nut shell. I can't seem to burn a DVD+R DL, everytime I attempt to do this the system crashes completely and I get the transparent window telling me to restart the system. To me, this feels a lot like the blue screen of death.
Anyone else having a similar problem? Have there been similar problems reported? Its definitely not the discs either, I've tried using Philips and Memorex DVD+R DLs and neither work, however, burning this stuff on Tiger was fine, however I'm not sure if Leopard is to blame because i dont remember if I had burned any DVD+R DLs successfully using Leopard.
I've got a first gen. Mac Pro with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D.

I'm just downloading Toy Story 1 & 2 from iTunes, because my girlfriend hasn't seen it and I wanted to show her before we see Toy Story 3 this summer.
Anyway, I want to take it over to hers to play, but she doesn't have a TV with any kind of input that could run from my MacBook. In other words, I can only take it round if it's on DVD.
Is there a free way to burn this movie onto a DVD?

Are there specific specifications or brands/models I need to look for to ensure OSX compatibility or to support burning from iTunes and the Finder?
