MacBook :: Low Pitched Electrical Whistling Noise / Crackling Noise Emitting From Magsafe
Dec 20, 2010I just got my 2.0ghz Alu Macbook a few days ago and everything works perfectly well, the thing is that after day one the magsafe started to emit a low pitched electrical whistling noise. It tends to be there a few minutes after booting into the OS and then it turns down to almost unhearable, but I experienced it returning after a few hours of use and then disappearing again. If I move close to the escape key I can hear a crackling noise emitting from the magsafe.I'm not trying to be overly nitpicky or anything but I read somewhere that if it's doing that it would be a faulty Mag-Safe board or something.
Does any one you guys know anything about this? I have the 14 days to return it as I bought it online from the Apple Store so if it's a faulty part that might die/break/ cause problems later I might have to.

That was New Years day. The first time I experienced this problem, I got nothing on the YouTube player and while skipping throughout the video to get it to stream, a noise that can't even be explained screamed out of the computers speakers. Today, I just had the same problem. I have no clue what it is except that I do know it comes from the speakers. Could anyone elaborate on if something similar has happened to you?
MacBook Pro :: Clicking And Beeping Noise - Hard Drive?
Aug 16, 2009Got a new MBP 17" 500GB 7200rpm about 2 months ago. Recently It's starting to make this weird clicking and beeping noise more and more. It used to do it every once in a while and I didn't think too much of it, but recently it's started doing it more, quite a bit actually. Is this something I need to be worried about? I'm thinking it is the Hard Drive, is that true? if so, then what? I am also getting the spinning beach ball a lot more often, for a good minute at a time. I am currently on the latest build of SL, the one right before release.

Apr 18, 2012I dropped my MacBook by accident earlier today and circa three hours later I am experiencing problems I have never encountered before. Now, my MacBook shuts off every 15 minutes or so and the last time it shut off, the screen went completely dark and the computer began making a regular beeping noise, and it smelt like something was being burnt... Lately I have also been noticing that when charging the charger tends to get heated up easier than before, and to higher temperatures as well.

Mar 23, 2009I just picked up a new MBP and loving it so far. Not sure if anyone else experiances this so I thought I would ask. When I have walked away from my Mac for a few minutes the screen dims down and has a faint beeping noise. When I touch a key or trackpad it is restored to full colour and the noise stops. Any ideas what or why this is?

May 23, 2009So the first time it did it was I think two days ago and I was doing something in Mail, when all of a sudden 'Beep', it's not really high pitched, and lasts about a second or less, and then it did it again about 30 seconds later. Now it's doing it frequently. Is it bad? A sign of impending doom? Used the Applecare TechTool Deluxe and everything passed. Also, it isn't always beeping, sometimes it's silent, for ages, then it'll beep and beep for a while, then quiet again.

Mar 24, 2012I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think.

Intel Mac :: G5 Keeps Freezing/crashing - SMU Reset Resulted In A Loud Fan Noise
Jul 3, 2012I have a refubished iMac G5 OS X 10.6.8 desktop that was purchased in Aug, 2006. Recently it has been either freezing, shutting down completely, or the display will just shut off multiple times per day 20+ times/day. I am not interested in purchasing the $49 help from Apple. Is it time for a new computer?
I've been attempting some troubleshooting:
I have plenty of RAM- we installed more memory about 8 months ago. Temperature running at 40 degrees C
I reset the SMU but now am hearing a loud fan sound and there is air blowing out of the horizontal vent in back of the desktop- which does not typically happen. The computer has not crashed since I reset the SMU 20 minutes ago. I'm worried about the noise.
Also, it has been really hot where I live, with a heat index of 110 today and I don't have air conditioning. Current indoor air temp is about 86 degrees F.
Also, I have been seeing thin horizontal stripes across my screen for the past few months, related or unrelated issue?

Feb 28, 2008I have an older 15" powerbook Titanium. About five years old now. Been working pretty well all five years, save for an external hinge I had to replace. Last night, the computer started buzzing from the insides, a buzzing reminiscent of a distant chainsaw. The program i was working in (firefox) just went to the pinwheel of doom and never recovered. I moved to the finder, which did the same. I forced booted. Same noise. Same problems. I can use programs for a few minutes, but then they pinwheel of doom and the computer freezes out.

Apr 9, 2012I have an Imac which used to emit sound from my desktop speakers. Now they've stopped. I've tried Iceclean, turning off bluetooth, and running disk utility repair. All of which hasn't solved the problem. I tried the speakers with my laptop and they work fine. So I tried a different set of speakers with my Imac thinking it might be the speakers, but they work fine with the laptop. The speakers are connected into the headphone jack. In the sound pane, output source does not show the connected speakers. When the jack is removed from the headphone connection sound is heard from the built in speakers from the Imac. I have the latest IOS software installed.

Oct 1, 2009Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! Jun 6, 2009On my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back.The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.
MacBook :: PISMO G3 Squealing Noise - Noise Coming From Under The Keyboard
Jul 14, 2008Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.
I Did the PRAM and PMU reset.I can hear it over music or the tv. It grew lower in pitch today after squealing for a half hour. I'd normally not let it go on that long, but i was
in the other room.Is my PISMO dying?

Oct 25, 2008I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.
istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.
I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?

Jun 20, 2009I recently purchased a new MBP 15, 3 Ghz, 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, build-to-order. The hard drive appears to be a seagate ST9500420ASG. I am experiencing a strange hard drive click followed 80% of the time by a beep. It is definitely not a beep from the speaker. Additionally, it happens at any time, even when the computer is sitting on a perfectly still table. It is exactly the same sound as what is documented at [URL] and mine too appears randomly approximately 15-20 times per day. It does not appear to matter if the computer is under light or heavy use and it seems truly random when it occurs.
Another user on youtube has also experienced this with their new MBP 15 and sent me a wav file with the same sound mine is making. So far, his experience is that it does not occur under bootcamp. This leads me to believe that it is something specific to OSX. Turning off the "put hard drive to sleep when possible" does not seem to make any difference. I have not personally tested bootcamp on my machine to confirm that mine is the same, but the original poster of the youtube video linked above also seems to think it is OSX specific.
OS X :: MacBook Stuck After Startup Beeping Sound
Oct 30, 2009I have a Macbook pro 2009 (2,26Ghz, 160 GB HDD, all Apple original parts) which is only a few months old. It has never failed me and I love it. Until now. I usually just put it to sleep when I am done with it but yesterday I turned it off. Now this morning when I press the power button the mac booting up sound beeps and everything seems normal. The White screen with the apple logo comes on and it starts working. After that however a blue background appears and that "clock"-wheel-thing that spins comes up, then it goes away, then it comes back and spins some more, then it goes away and so on. Nothing else happens.
I tried turning it off and botting up again a few times but the same thing happens every time. I put in the installation-cd (Leopard) and held down c while I booted up, this seemed to be working at first, the installation menus came up and I chose that option that re-installs OSX while keeping the files on the hard drive. After a few minutes into the installation however I got a message that said (rough translation). "The installation failed. Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer. The installation could not install certain files on "/Volumes/MacintoshHD". What does this mean? Has my harddrive failed or what seems to be the problem?

MacBook Pro :: Beeping Sound 3x In The Middle Of Work
Jun 13, 2012I have had no problems with my MacBook Pro until recently. I am working on a summer research project so I do not usually get the time to visit an Apple Store, turn in my computer for a day and wait.
When I lift my computer while its still on, it gives me a weird beeping noise which won't stop. I always have to manually shut it down by using the power button. It work perfectly well when I switch it on again. But if I lift it in the air or if it gets out of sync with the line of gravity, the same beeping occurs.
I guess I heard some particle go around inside my Mac when I tried to tilt it when in power off mode. Should I open it and check or is it too bad?
At present, I am backing up my research data. My work would suffer a lot if I have to submit my computer for repairs even for a single day.
