Is there a way to copy Apple Hardware Test from the CD onto my hard drive?
I am looking for a solution that will allow me to run Apple Hardware Test without the need of my CDs -- I just dont want to take them with me all the time.
Do I have to copy each file individually or can I copy an entire folder to external hard drive?

My August 2007 MacBook runs OSX 10.4.10. It has performed flawlessly since my daughter bought it in 2007, and perfectly after I purchased it from her last september. The other night I was surfing the web while flying on a commercial airliner. (GoGoNet or something similar) Performance was kind of slow but I attributed that to the in-air wifi, which I had never used before. Then the browser started to hang with the spinning pinwheel. Option apple escape WOULD NOT force quit safari. After a few shutdowns using only the power button, the mac hung up on startup. I hear the chime, see the apple icon, the gear turns but it never goes past that point. It may be significant that the plane was flying through scary turbulence when my problems began.
When I boot up using the mac install disk 1, I can get it to start cleanly using the C key, the D key and NO keys. But when I run the hardware diagnostic, both short and long test, the mac comes up 100% clean. But i cannot see any test for the hard drive. When I try to run disk utility, the colored pinwheel arrives and it never goes away. When I go down the road of re-installing the system software, I cannot see the target drive.
When I put my ear on the deck, just to the right of the track-pad, I can hear the hard drive quietly spinning away with regular - not random - clicks.
I see that Apple is quietly replacing these hard-drives, but the affected computers seem to have a folder/question mark on the desktop on startup, not the apple/spinning gear.
I really would like to be able to recover my photos and some files if the hard drive is going to be swapped. But I am resigned to the situation that these un-backed-up files will be forever lost.
I have a Mac Mini 1.83 Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB ram. My internal drive is shot and I need to run the hardware test that came with the system (on my leopard disk) from an external optical drive. I am now running snow leopard 10.6.8
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf I run the hardware test, they can check possible errors on my hd? I remember on pc a soft in the 90s for check bad clusters on the hd, on Mac I know disk warrior, but I never use. Its necessary use disk warrior or something. I hear people that say that its bad.

I also did fresh OS install and loaded basic applications. Strangely I didn't notice any speed boost while booting and to be honest I feel like all applications (photoshop for example) are also starting much slower than on original hdd. Is there any way to test hard drive if it performs as it should be? I also have 2 more older drives installed. is it possible that one of them would slow the system down?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I'm pretty good with the OS, but I am not so hot on the behind the scenes stuff, so advice involving Terminal, for example, would require very detailed instructions. I just put that out there because I searched MRoogle for this topic and there were many ideas involving commands like fsck (sp?) that went way over my head. But like I said, I'm good with the OS, been using Macs since my Dad brought home our first one in 1985 (it cost more than his car) never even owned a PC in my life, probably why I'm no good without a GUI. I just finished a series of projects at work (over the past 2 years) and have amassed about 10 external fire wire drives.
Most of them are G-Techs so we've invested a bit of coin into them. We have a break before our next project starts and I would like try to assess which ones are still healthy and which ones should be retired. I have tech tools (never used it) I also have Drive Genius 2. I ran an integrity test on one drive, it made a pretty graph but have no idea how to interpret it. Also, all of them can be reformatted at this point. Oh, and they were shuttled around town on these projects. They were pretty well taken care of, but handed over to be used and transported by others, so it's not like they've been sitting on a shelf in my care for two years.
I have a 17" unibody MBP (early 2009, specs below). It was running hotter than usual the other day, so I F2 booted into AHT to run a diagnostic. The status box within AHT showed 1 second into the 1st pass, and never got beyond that. Several seconds after that status message was displayed, the cursor froze. The time counter never advanced after that, and although I waited a long time, nothing happened. The test froze.Â
I've tried it several times more. It once worked, but every other time has frozen. Checking the "extended test" box, or trying to run in loop mode has made no difference - still freezes at "1 second".Â
I've had this machine for 3 years, OS's Leopard through Lion, and this has never happened before. I last ran a test, successfully, in January. I've not changed any components or suffered any damage since then. Memtest (ver 4.22) says my RAM is fine. (I ran this because the first portion of the AHT is the RAM component.) Aside from the aforementioned overheating episode, which disappeared, my machine's been fine.Â

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.

I just upgraded my HD on my new MBP13.
I upgraded it from 250GB to a 500GB 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black. However the noise was definitely noticeable for me and I have changed it back to the 250 5400RPM GB Seagate Momentus. Sucks to have lost the money
Now the thing is I need 500 GB and I want it to be a internal hard disk. I was thinking about buying 500 GB 5400RPM Scorpio Blue or a Seagate 5400RPM Momentus. Not decided yet(any recommendation?).
The problem is though I want to begin using my system. I want to install programs etc. Is there an easy way to copy the whole system to the new hard drive when it arrives?

But to do that, I'll have to buy a external hard drive to back up everything and then copy it back onto the new internal hard drive , right? I don't have that much budget. I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.Â

I'm trying to put a 10gb sized video onto my hard drive but it won't allow me. I don't want to format it for 2 reasons.
1) i don't have space to back up and
2) the purpose of putting it on the hard drive is so I can watch the video through my blu ray player's usb port.
in disk utility, if i erase and use a volume format other than ms-dos (fat), the blu ray player doesn't pick p on the drive.
How to copy files to external hard disk and use it for both mac and windows. there is the fat32 formatting bt i dont wanna use formatting because i already have a lot of content on the exteral hard disk.

My question is about the Mac's DVD software: I'd like to be able to make copies of a (non-commercial) DVD. Can I copy it to my hard drive and then burn copies? Would they be readable on a DVD player as well as a computer?

I'm about to go buy a MBP from a local store. The thing is, today I placed an order for 4GB RAM and a 7200RPM drive, which will get here in 2-3 days time.

I replaced my internal hard drive on my iMac and I am trying to restore the files from my old internal hard drive. I purchased an external hard drive enclosure and when I plug my old internal hard drive into my iMac via USB, I can access all of the files.
I want to have access to the files from the old drive without leaving it plugged into the iMac (I want to use the old HD as an external back up for another computer (PC).
I did a clean instal of Snow Leopard on the new internal hard drive and did not have time machine back ups (I do now).

I downloaded SuerDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner but neither will allow me to copy the old hard drive to my new internal hard drive. I was reading in the SuperDuper! instructions about "Sparse" image, but not sure if that is the best way to go.
I also thought of just copying the old internal HD to my existing external HD, but there is not enough available space.

Earlier today my MacBook Pro ran a grey bar update during start up started up & ran a little slower until I restarted afterwards. I was concerened until the restart, however I am no longer concerned. My main issue is that now I can't seem to correctly follow the instructions to successfully start an apple hardware test. I have previously owned a Mac mini, Powermac G5 Dual 1.8ghz and Powermac Quad G5 and I have always been able to successfully run apple hardware tests on them.
I held down the "D" key during startup prior to the grey screen and I tried plugging in a ethernet cable, the powercable and a USB keyboard all to no avail.

I've been having issues with my 2011 MacBook Pro, I just keep getting a weird error popup but it always flashes up and goes away before I can read it. My Mac has also even running a bit slower lately and I know that I can do the Apple Hardware Test to check out that all the hardware is functioning properly. But will my Mac continue to run normally after I do the AHT? Like, will I be able to use it as I was before?

I've just ordered a new iMac to replace an older MacBook Pro. My pro has all the applications on it that I use and I'd like to just duplicate that onto the new iMac.
Both are running the same version of Snow Leopard. Is there an easy way to copy these over? I remember an Apple store employee telling me you could image or copy one hard drive directly to the other so you don't have to reinstall everything.
Can anyone tell me how to do this? I'm not a mac expert so this is completely new to me.

Trying to run Apple hardware test as my computer keeps crashing, or shutting down 30min in.  I restart while holding down "D" and nothing comes up. takes a while to startup, but then goes straight to desktop. What am I doing wrong? I'm ethernet connected to internet. When I bought the computer I installed an SSD HD. I remember when needing to install new software on the new drive it was a nuisance since the computer didn't actually ship with any software CDs. Had to do it over the internet somehow. The computer didn't have any problems before so never had to use AHT until now.Â
secondary question. I also reset SMC, by pressing left side shift+control+option+power key after shut down, but didn't get much response out of that either. no sound, or signal that what I did actually reset SMC. How would I know it reset or not?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMacbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.
The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.
