I bought a new harddrive to upgrade my macbook's old hard drive to a new one over the spring break. I tried to unscrew the screw on the black plastic retaining bar, but I unfortunately failed to do so: even worse, the screw is completely stripped now!
Since the screw is so small, I don't think I can use any of the "Easy Out" kind of unscrewing stripped screw tools... or can I? Wouldn't I damage the retaining bar? What should I do?

First off, I am very O.C.D when it comes to my electronics and I constantly worry about my stuff. Over the past month, I have been checking SMART status and benchmarking my hard drive at least once a day. I'm a little worried that my hard drive is dying... Yea, I'm crazy...Regardless of the above, I would like some answers to a few questions..First, how durable are the unibody lower case screws? Do they strip easily? If I purchase the correct size screw driver (phillips #00), what are my risks of damaging the screws, or possibly wearing them out prematurely?Second, how difficult is it to realign the lower case and not cause a "wobble." I have read some people incorrectly screwing in the bottom case and basically bending the lower case, causing the machine to wobble on a flat surface. After reading my manual, Apple clearly indicates that users are permitted to service the hard drive. I'm technologically savvy but my only worries are damaging my $2500 machine...

After a little spill of coke, my keyboard becomes sticky. I bought new one from ebay and replaced it. Everything works fine except keyboard backlit. I tried basic solutions such as SMC reset, check cabling again but not worked.
i behaved very politely while disassmbling and assembling but now i start to suspect that kill backlit somehow.

I don't know about everyone else, but I literally cannot wait to sink some gaming hours into this wonderful machine that up until recently I did not thing would game at all!
Although my Air is still on a conveyor belt somewhere with cool lasers and stuff I know there are some people out there with there machines in there hands ready to do some showing off , well here is where you can do it!
I will keep an updated list of games people have requested to see benchmarked here in this first post. All you have to do is pick a game (preferably one you already own) and benchmark it! You can add your benchmark to this thread and again i will direct link to your benchmark in this first post. Useful and awesome eh? Games can be mac or boot camp just so long as you let us know which you are trying out! I'll get us started on a list but request away.
Games awaiting benchmark:
- World of Warcraft
- Dragon Age
- Mass Effect 2
- Half Life 2
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Team Fortress 2
- Crysis
- GTA IV
Benchmarked Games
- Call Of Duty 4 - OSX - Thanks to theunits3
- Starcraft 2 - OSX - Thanks to theunits3

I have a Canoscan 4400F which is not recognised by my MBP (early 2008) or my iMac (early 2007). (Error message is 'Unable to find driver'.) Despite installing various drivers which are supposed to be Leopard compatible, no luck so far.
Does anyone know of a driver which will work, or alternatively if I have to replace, a recommend a reasonably priced scanner which is Leopard compatible. Scanner will primarily be used for scanning documents for archiving and old photo prints for adding to iPhoto.

I'm soon to be upgrading from my iMac to a Mac Pro. I do a lot of 3d modeling and animation as well as visual effects for films but have to use external computers to render due to the limitations of the iMac's memory.
I have been looking into upgrading the Graphics card from the standard to the ATI Radeon 4870HD and discovered that you can, quite easily get the cheaper PC and flash it to run on the Mac Pro.

have only just started the journey of installing a VM on my iMac and have hit what looks like a common problem but I cant see a common answer!
I've got an iMac running OS X (10.6.4 to be precise) with a 3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM and 500G HDD.
I installed Parallels 5 preferring it over bootcamp because you can switch over without having to reboot.
I've then download Windows 7 64bit version from the Microsoft store and run through the installation / creation of a new vm in parallels.
All seemed to be fine for the first 45 seconds but then I've hit a pop up called "Load Driver" saying "No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK" - on clicking OK out of that pop up - I have a choice to BROWSE, RESCAN to find the right "driver".
My question is - what is the right driver? what device is the driver needed for? I've searched around and most suggestions point towards going into device manager - well - I'm still on STAGE 1 of the install of Windows 7 where it says its "Collecting information".
When I downloaded Windows 7 from the Microsoft store it provided 2 files:
Windows7_Professional_ISO_64bit.iso and bootsect.exe
but no other files. I stored it in Documents/Windows7 files.
Apologies if you've had this question a thousand time but could someone kindly suggest how I find out what device drivers I need?

This scanner was able to scan 3D objects as if they were photographed professionally, if you put a colored cloth behind the object. Great depth of field. Used to have one, I just bought several of them, I have a beige G3, but I have no software/driver. Where to go?

I tried to install counter-strike on my vmware image of windows xp pro x64 edition. The thing is that when I opened up the application, I was told that I could only run in software mode. How do play the game utilizing my geforce 8600gt graphics card?
I have already checked the box VirtualMachine->Settings->Display->Accelerate 3D graphics. So this shouldn't be the problem.
I also tried downloading a driver from nvidias web site, but I could not install it.

I am on my new 27" iMac last night when all of a sudden the display froze and pix-elated for a second and then went black and a few seconds turned back on with an error message at the bottom right screen saying my display adapter had stopped . . . . .
I was in Windows 7 64bit Professional at the time. I also noticed that Apple is wanting download a newer version of Boot Camp which I will download tonight!
I went to the ATI website and found a new driver dated 4-2010 and downloaded it. All seems well but was wondering if anyone has had the same issue?

If i plug it in, the tiger recognises it, and i can move the cursor with moving the pen above the tablet, but when i want to "click", nothing happens. Someone told me, that he has Panther and his tablet (also WP 5x4) works fine. what's the problem with mine? What kind of driver shall i install?

I just installed Windows 7 and have got as far as installing the graphics card drivers from ati's website (since the ones that windows update installs are almost always out of date). Now the card is being recognised as a Radeon HD 5750 but I know from other discussions best guess is It's actually a Mobility card inside the iMac.

I think I will get the base model (3GB) and add a 2x4GB Crucial kit.
My question is this - is there any hit for keeping 2 x 1GB and putting the 2x4GB in (10GB Total)?
My uses are VM (XP for Corel Draw only) and CS5 in the mac side. I also need to do a lot of handbrake to convert my divx encodes to a more mac friendly format.

also posted on apple discussion forums. My wife has a 12" ibook g4 1.33 mhz. It has been exhibiting the following symptoms with increasing frequency:
1) the display will completely dim to the lowest setting or cycle between bright and dim, as if pressing f1 and/or f2 repeatedly
2) some of whatever she was typing or working on at the time will be deleted
3) a string of repeated characters (usually q1aq1aq1a) will appear in her typing
4) often the desktop is brought to the front as if pressing f11 in expose
5) other than the problems described, the computer continues to work normally
6) problems are almost always related to moving the hinge position, but sometimes happen randomly, with no movement at all
7) it will sometimes occur many times a day, then not at all for several days
8) it seems to happen more often when the computer is not on a hard surface, but this may just be my imagination or some random bad luck
I am at a loss as to what the problem may be. I was thinking it might be the display cable because of the link to hinge position, but that wouldn't account for the random typing. Then I thought it was the motherboard, but the computer seems to work ok other than this. I did realize the other day that most of the problems are things on the left hand edge of the keyboard (display brightness, the q1a pattern), but this doesn't account for the deleted typing and the mysterious f11 thing. Does anybody have any thoughts? Am I looking at a display cable (hopefully this is it - I have no problems with disassembling/reassembling things)? Or is it the motherboard (probably means it would be more economical to get a new machine)? Or is it something else?

This will primarily be used for application development, primarily with Xcode.
I'll also use it for photography/video (GIMP, and stepping into Aperture and Final Cut Express).
I've ruled out an iMac because I want plenty of expansion options.
I know Xcode scales linearly depending on the number of cores but I am trying to look for a sweet spot in performance and budget. I want something I can grow with for a few years (i.e 3-4).

I have a mid-2006 Macbook and have never tried to do any tinkering on the inside except for installing some RAM. Whenever I had any trouble in the past, I took the machine into the Apple Store. Now that my Applecare warranty is up, I figured that I can crack it open to do some repairs regarding my fan without voiding my warranty. Alas, it seems that someone on Apple's end stripped a screw / put it in improperly. Now, I cannot get it out. The screw in question is the center screw in this picture (from iFixit, not my Macbook): All other screws in the tear down came out easily except for this one. Dammit. What should I do? It is too late to point fingers at Apple because I have no proof that I wasn't the numbskill who did this. It is just such a small screw... I'd just like to remove it somehow
