MacBook Pro :: Erase ALL The Files On It?

Apr 6, 2012

I've just gotten a new MacBook Air and successfully migrated all my data from my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to clean up my MacBook Pro for my son. I don't want to erase all the applications, but I do want to erase all my files. Is there an easy way to it?

MacBook Pro :: Delete Files That Say You Can't Erase Them?

May 14, 2012

I'm trying to delete several files (one, an application; the other, an Excel file) but whenever I move them to the trash, I get an error message. The Application (Skype) error says I have to unlock the file, but after I unlock it (using File->Get Info) and I type in the administrator password, it gets me back to the beginning and I have to do the whole thing over and over again.

When I try to delete Excel file, i get a dialogue box that says "The operation can't be completed because the item NY alumni list.xls is in use." But the file is only being used by me; even after I make a small change and resave it and then try to delete it, i get the same error message repeatedly.

OS X Mavericks :: Erase Old Time Machine Backup Files

Aug 28, 2014

I inherited an old external hard drive that I would like to use with Time Machine on a computer. However, the drive was used as a backup with Time Machine on another computer that has since been wiped clean and is no longer available. Unfortunately, the external drive still has the old TM backup files from the old computer. I've found that I cannot simply delete the backup files from the external drive.

How can I delete the TM backup files from the external drive? Will erasing via Disk Utility handles this?

MacBook Pro :: How To Erase Everyting?

Dec 29, 2010

I need to repair my hard drive but the Disk Utility won't work.

I found out that I can insert the disk it came with and install the OSX and then run disk utility and do the repair.[I think it's called doing a clean install]

So I insert my disk and try and install the OSX and it's telling me I need to erase everything on my computer and then I can install it because there's a newer version on OSX on it.

[My MBP is 2 years old so I think I have Leopard or Snow Leopard]

Is there any way I do it without having to erase everything?

If I do end up having to erase everything would it be possible to put it all on my Seagate, that currently is holding stuff from my PC? How do I do that?

MacBook :: Can't Erase USB Data

Jan 7, 2010

Every time I try to erase music from my USB Key or Phone.

You can see that the music or files have been erased, but it doesnt free up and space. When you pop the USB Key into the stereo or play music on the phone, all the files are there.

I have to go through the Disk Utility option to erase stuff, but this erases everything. When you erase on the PC, everything is fine.

MacBook Pro :: How To Erase HD And Re-install OSX Lion

May 9, 2012

I got a new macbook pro. I tried installing windows on it via bootcamp...To cut a long story short, I messed up the system. Now the PC doesn't start and when I run the system, the apple logo just shows with the chime. Nothing more. I din't back up anyhting.

If the system manages to start, immediately I log on, the computer logs itself off again. Im simply tired of all this and want to erase mac osx lion from my mac book, then re-install it again. How to go about it?

I know pressing Command +R then going to recovery will open recovery. Then I click on disk utilities. But then, selecting which hardisk to format?

My hard disk had no partitions, but then trying to format it, I see a larger disk with a different title, then under it, I see "Macintosh HD". Which of them should I select to format to do the job? the main HD or the sub one under it "Macintosh HD"

I totally hate this, considering the fact that I have to buy about $60.0 worth of credits to re-download osx lion from the net. My macbook didn't come with a cd you know..

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: 7 Pass Erase Vs 3 Pass Vs Zero Erase

Apr 25, 2012

I want to start afresh on my HD, i.e. reinstall from original disks and use Disk Utility to secure erase (via Erase & Install).I've read articles about pros and cons + how to do it. So I think I know how to do everything. However, from my reading I gather that Zero Erase is a single pass random erase whereas 7 Pass is secure erase (and there is a 3 Pass secure erase option nowadays)? That got me wondering - does 7 Pass secure erase make 7 x single passes over the entire disk?If it does, then when the blue bar has extended a bit over a third of the way across the progress monitor (that little bar that indicates time left) it should have made 3 passes, which would be equivalent to 3 pass secure erase? Is that an option? Is it possible to stop part way through an erase (which is part of E & I)? My original disks 1 and 2 have OS X 10.4, with OS X 10.5 included as complimentary 3rd disk (because OS X 10.5 was just released at that time).I gather I need to erase with disk 1, then install disks 1 + 2, then install OS X 10.5.
