I am looking for a eSata expresscard for my MacBook Pro. I have a problem with looping my G Drive external through my firewire soundcard due to the single bus on the mbp. It just doesn't like it. What eSata expresscard adaptor would you recommend so i can hook my G Drive upto it?

I have a 2010 macbook pro with snowleopard on it & have a 7 port ac powered usb hub hooked up to it. If I plug in 1 or more external hard drives into the hub & have them working together/transferring files, will there be a big slowdown?right now my hard drives are in just usb 2.0 enclosures. Would it be worth upgrading their enclosures to firew wire - esata? would I feel a performance difference?

I just want a simple answer here: I have a new 17" '09 uMBP. I want to use my eSata external hard drives. What expresscard adapter should I buy? I was transferring stuff over via USB and was horrified: 25 minutes to transfer 20 gigs of pictures! 20 gigs should take no more than 5, maybe 10 minutes tops over eSata (as it did on my old laptop). So which eSata-Expresscard actually works for the uMBP's?

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently upgrading, I bought the newest MBP 17" specifically because it still had the expresscard slot (thinking having eSATA capability would make it the only pro laptop in the new lineup). I don't need my storage to be portable, I edit at home. Being new to RAID I've been researching and asking questions. I want to get the best setup for my money. People have recommended FW800 but that doesn't help me need to get the most speed possible, I feel eSATA is faster. I also want the redundancy in case a drive crashes. But the MBP only has one expresscard slot.
Does this mean my bandwidth is limited to one 300Mb/s channel? i.e. Should I not even consider RAID0 on a MBP since the bottleneck is 300MB/s? Barefeats recommends this adapter saying it's the fastest they tested at only 200MB/s! So what advantage will stripping give? It seems with only one available eSATA channel the MBP doesn't have many options for professional storage (although still faster than FW800). What would people recommend?..........
I have a 15" MacBook Pro from a couple of years ago (2.0 GHz) and I am about to upgrade my harddrive from 75 GB to 500 GB (and from 5400 to 7200 rpm). I think I am going to simply clone my harddrive, so I bought an enclosure for my new drive to use when transferring all my data. The enclosure I purchased works with usb 2.0 or eSATA.
My question is, should I take advantage of the eSATA speeds? Do you think it's worth it? For another 50 bucks I could by an expresscard and a cable that will allow me to do the transfer via eSATA. Should I bother or should I just stick with USB 2.0? I hear USB 3.0 is coming out early next year, so I was thinking I shouldn't bother with eSATA (though 50 bucks isn't much of an investment). But I'm not about to wait for USB 3.0 to come out. Do you think it would be worth spending the money to get the extra speed for this transfer? My 75 GB drive is almost full.
The MBP has one expresscard slot. So if you use an eSata adapter (even if it has dual eSATA ports) it would only have one eSATA channel And that would be limited further by the express card slot and more still by the type of card (make, model, etc..). My question is: with Barefeats claiming even the best eSATA card for a MBP being 200MB/s (even if you claim less) using a dual eSATA RAID connection for a stripped array would be limited to 100MB/s per port. Is this correct? Because I'm trying to understand this to see if it's worth building a RAID setup for my MBP when I'm home.
I've asked this numorous times and get helpful advice but not addressng this specific and fundamental fact. I am not interested in FW800 because I want the fastest I can get but want it to make sense. I would also reask my other questions about my situation but this question comes first.

How can I use a firewire soundcard?
I have a WD MyBook ES that has both USB and eSata ports. I have 2 partitions on it- 1 is HFS+ and the other is FAT32. Both work fine with USB. With the ExpressCard however, I encounter a problem with the HFS+ partition. Both show up under Leopard, but after I copy 1 or 2 files to the HFS+ partition I get either a "Filename too long" error or an "unexpected error" -50 error code on any other operation. From that point forward, the partition acts as if its read-only, but doesn't show that in any of the permissions. All write operations fail after this.
However, the Fat32 partition continues to work just fine, and does not appear to suffer from the same problems. It seems I can copy files to and from it all day without problems. Both are on the same drive, going across the same controller. The card is a T-EC2R made by ONNTO [URL]. Its essentially a reference implementation of the sil3132 expresscard eSata 2. In fact, I've flashed the reference bios to try to troubleshoot the problem, and I'm using their drivers since ONNTO does not provide mac drivers for this card. The short story is that I ordered the T-EC2S, which does have drivers for OS X, but they shipped me the T-EC2R. When I realized it was a reference design, I just used the drivers from Silicon Image...............
I just bought a second hand macbook pro. Spec: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, 500GB drive. Mac OSX 10.6.8. I think it is the 2011 model (A1286) I use my mac for music making. I have been having problems getting my external USB soundcard/preamp to work with this mac.
With a Digidesign Mbox 2 mini it works but the signal is very low i.e. when I am recording vocals I don't get much signal going into the mac, which tells me that not much power is going out to the soundcard through the USB port. With the Tascam US-122, the light comes on which shows me that it is receiving power and it seems to be recognised by my software, but the audio drops in and out intermittently. I have the latest drivers for both pieces of kit.
Both soundcards worked fine with my older Macbook Pro. After doing some searches online - I see that some Macbook Pro have low powered USB ports - before I go out and buy a powered USB hub/new soundcard - I wondered if anyone has successfully managed to power an external soundcard through the USB ports with this version of the Macbook Pro?
Anyone had success with either the Mbox 2 mini or Tascam US-122? Applecare told me that the Macbook Pros are not designed to support externally powered kit!!! Apparently the USB ports are only for an external mouse, keyboard and externally powered HD.

I recently got a few external HDD, and for the life of me couldn't find any Firewire equipped enclosures. Seems eSata and USB have taken the standard.
So I decided to just suck it up and use USB.
Now apple has taken away the express card slot, is there any way to utilise eSata on a MBP? The only conceivable way would be through firewire.
Does anyone know how the performance compares between (1) an external hard disk connected with eSATA, through a PCIE card, and (2) the same disk connected directly to Firewire 800? Is there some data about this?

I am hooking up an 8TB Raid hard drive to it for digitizing, backup and editing on FCP 6 and would like to have a higher speed available than the laptop's FireWire 400 provides. Is there a way to augment/build out the MacBook to utilize either a FireWire 800 slot or an eSATA EC2 card? I don't think this version of the MacBook (MacBook4,1) has a PCI or PCIe card slot. Although I believe it may have a mini-PCIe card somewhere, as the last page of the Users Guide says (under Europe—EU Declaration of Conformity):
"Hereby, Apple Inc. declares that this 802.11a/b/g/n Mini-PCIe card is in compliance with the R&TTE Directive."

I have installed my new eSATA Newertech cable in my Mac Pro. I want to install windows XP on this external drive, because I have the Apple RAID Card.
I started Boot Camp Config, but I can not install the Windows Partition on the external drive. The external drive is not listed in boot camp.
What can I do? Is there a tutorial to install windows XP / Vista on a external drive (connected via eSATA) when you have a RAID Card?

I want to add a second external drive, either 500 GB or 750 GB. It would be partitioned into one partition for cloning, and the other for TimeMachine when I upgrade to Leopard. Currently my external drives are all Firewire. Would there be any significant advantage for me to buy a SATA controller card for my G5 and then go to eSATA rather than Firewire? One online dealer I contacted said that the speed advantage for the SATA for my uses would be minimal, but the possible headaches of eSATA over Firewire could be signifcant. I"m conisedering the 750 GB LaCie d2 Quadra drive.

I am buying an external Blu-Ray drive and have been looking at one by OWC that has USB 2.0, Firewire 400, 800, and eSATA connectors. I've really become interested in a drive that is made by Buffalo Technologies and has a USB 2.0 and eSATA connector. The issues are as follows:
-Will USB 2.0 handle the bandwith well or do I really need something such as Firewire or eSATA?
-Most of all, is there an adapter to convert an eSATA connector such as on the Blu-Ray drive to a Firewire connector that I could plug in the front of my Mac Pro?
im looking for an external enclosure that provides a firewire option for my macbook pro. The reason i am doing this is because my macbook will randomly eject my usb powered one for no reason. I have been reading that firewire does not have this problem. Im only looking for an enclosure as I replaced my stock 320gb hardrive with a 64gb ssd for my main drive. I just bought a MBP 2010 with the i7, and I'm trying to figure out what to do for external storage and backup since this is my first Mac ever. I have an Icy Dock with a 1TB harddrive in it, but it only has eSATA and USB ports. USB would not be preferable for trying to back up stuff. I was reading these forums about eSATA ExpressCards, but they seem really suspect (kernel panics sound terrifying) and a lot of work to get going. I was thinking about just getting another enclosure with FireWire 800, but can't seem to find any advice on good ones. I was wondering if I should just get a new external harddrive. I would like to get out of this without having to buy too much new stuff. Can somebody give a recommendation regarding whether I should get an expresscard, new enclosure, or new external?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a VANTEC NexStar 3 NST-360FBSU-BK. In the exclosure, I have a SATA drive capable of 3.0Gb/second. It's attached to my Late 2009 Mac Mini via FireWire 800. Based upon my understanding and in this situation, the FireWire should be the bottleneck. Therefore, I should be enjoying bandwidth somewhere shy of 800Mb/second. nfortunately, I'm not getting any where near that speed. I can transfer a 726MB file in 18.6 seconds. According to my math, that's ~5808Mb/18.6 seconds = ~312 Mb/second. This is not even FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 speed.For completeness sake, I also just upgraded from 2GB of ram to 4GB (both PC8500) but nothing seems negatively affected (in fact the computer is much, much more snappy!).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a few macs running Tiger and Leopard and do not have a hard drive that is filled to more than 20GB of the capacity. Looking for external hard drive solutions. I have found a couple of very good drives that only have FW 400 and USB 2.0, one in particular is a older model G-Drive 500GB for $50 that is supposed to be quite reliable. These drives are being blown out due to newer ones have esata and fw 800. Would I see a difference in speed cloning or backing up to a a fw 400 drive even if I get a newer mac that only has fw 800 ports and I use a 400-800 adaptor? The better drives are faster 7200 RM vs the slower 5400 drives, mostly portable that I have been looking at. I have been reading posts that for applications such as mine I would not see a difference. For the most part I use the computers for office related tasks including Word, Excel etc with not much else, although I have some different utility programs. I just want a bootable drive should my hard drive fail. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drives. My main comp has two drives where the primary is cloned to a secondary, but want a external that I can easily plug into a new mac and clone the hard drive in that Mac to my external drive!
