I like to use private browsing. Why is it after I set up my top sites and then use private browsing, if I open another window (command, n), I'll lose my top sites. Before I leave top sites, I make sure that I'm done editing and that the thumb tack is blue and not black which I'm told saves the sites. So what's going on? I'm actually at the Apple Store and the trainer at my personal projects sessions just doesn't know why this doesn't work. Anyone know how I can keep my top sites while I use private browsing?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just recently got my first mac, moving from a windows computer.
On my previous pc on internet explorer there was an option for 'Private Browsing' which didn't leave any files or anything and the sites visited were fully untraceable.
On Safari i have noticed the same option, does this do the same (doesn't leave any cache or history or anything like that?)
In Safari 5, cookies from private browsing session aren't being erased after closing the private browsing session. The private session pages don't appear in the history, so that much works; I have no idea if the cache is being emptied. Is anyone else having this problem? I've uninstalled the add-ons I had (ClickToFlash, Glims) and turned off the new Safari Extensions, so I'm ruling them out as the problem.

I'm trying to find a list of webpages viewed by my kids while private browsing is enabled. Is this possible? Also, any way I can turn off private browsing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have tried the "dscacheutil -cachedump -entries Host" terminal command but it just comes back with "-bash: dscacheutil: command not found". Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or if there is a different command to use? I have a Mac laptop if that means anything, it's about 1.5 years old!
View 1 Replies View RelatedIt appears as though there may be some suspicious activity occurring on the family computer. Firstly, "private browsing", "reset safari" and "empty cache" all appear under the edit menu in safari. I don't recall having seen them earlier, does this mean they have been recently used or is it part of the standard menu? Also, in the internet history whilst no webpages can be found there are some obscene jpegs. Images found in the internet history, have they been deliberately viewed or is it possible that they find their way there behind the scenes?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to disable private browsing in Safari 4. I already managed to do it in Safari 3 following Mac Guide instructions (http://guides.macrumors.com/Safari#D...ivate_Browsing).
Now I want to do the same in Safari 4. I also downloaded the newest XCode. However, again following the above mentioned instructions I only get an error message saying that it can't open "nibs".
I'd appreciate any help!
[please don't start a general discussion about private browsing. Doing it in Safari 3 was the perfect solution for me. I really love this forum!]
I have a browsing habit that is incompatible with marriage and having Private Browsing available is a very big temptation. I was able to remove Private Browsing from Safari 3 but am unable to find out how to remove it from version 4. I have Snow Leopard and have installed Xcode Tools. It seems that most of the browsers are starting to add Private Browsing to their software.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that my kids have been using private browsing a lot lately and i don't like that, I want to know if there's any way to take it off the menu, that and the ''view all history'' button, because they can also erase sites seen there. I tried xcode, but after downleading a Safari 4.0.5 I can't use it anymore, look: Xcode doesn't work with Firefox either and I don't know what to do.
View 2 Replies View RelatedPurchased myself a 27" iMac from Apple about a week ago. Everything is all good and fine - except my private browsing on Safari doesn't seem to work.It works fine on my Macbook, but for some reason on my iMac, when I turn it on, it works - but then when the computer restarts and is used again, it's turned off
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way via an add-on or setting to have Safari perform a "Reset Safari" when you close Safari and/or have "Private Browsing" enabled when you a launch Safari? Similar to the functionality that FireFox has where you can clean up automatically after your session using "Clear Private Data." In FireFox there is a preference for it but I didn't see anything like that in Safari - leading me to believe there might be a hack or add-on that will do it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedBefore Yosemite I never had a problem with using Private Browsing window in Safari - now it seems to be designed to log you out as much as possible- but that's another question..I'm having is that private windows block the top of the screen so it's impossible to login to certain web sites (PayPal, Facebook..), basically any site who's login is at the very top of the screen. It will work just fine in regular safari window.

I was wondering if you can setup a private print job with the Toshiba 850e Copier Mac OSX drivers? We are able to do it on our PCs, but I do not see a printing preferences options where I can check the Private Print job box, and set a password. We are thinking about switching to macs here at our school, but our teachers really like the private print option of the copier.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe symptoms is: The flash videos are only display with a full red bar and nothing happen, no video no sound nothing. The Flash player was upgrade with 11.2.202.235. before safari 5.1.7. I have an iMac with SL, and a Macbook with SL too. However after I upgraded safari 5.1.7 the flash videos are not display correctly, (only videos). The same happen in both computers. I need to tell you that I follow all the possible recommendations that I founded in internent. I uninstall flash pug-in many times. I restore both. I switch many buttons and options like "reset safari", "empty cahe", "block pop-up windows", "enable java-script", "enable java". I turn off and on the firewall. I switch all the options in the flash player plug in preferences. And nothing. I turn on and off the plug ins. In fact I tried all the possibilities in the preferences menus from the programs.
In one occasion I had a glimpse of functionality for only one hour without problems after I reinstall safari from the Apple website, but only worked until I turned off the computer. The next day was the same problem. After I fought with safari 5.1.7 and the plug-in flash player 11.2.202.235. Now I noticed something wired, only when I switch the "Private browsing" option in safari is when the videos are displayed correctly.

I'm using Automator to rename 200 odd pictures I have taken to the date the photograph was taken.
I have tried renaming them, sorting them then reloading in other applications and trying to save.
I see no option in changing the name to a new name, it just adds to the existing name and the filename is now massive. I did not copy originals. There must be something I can do. I tried a program called file merger (something like that) but same sort of thing happened. I have tried around ten fee downloads.
I'm trying to delete a bunch of unwanted files that take up a lot of space, and I'm finding this file that is 2 gigs, which labeled: private/var/vm/sleepimage, but I can't access the file or delete it. (I'm using a program called GrandPerspective which visually represents how memory is being used).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm doing some major maintenance of my Macbook at the moment, and so far that has included running Onyx and Cocktail, and I'm not in the process of defragmenting files and free space with TechTool. In the process of defragmenting files, a few files called "daily.out" cropped up as fragmented and large. They were contained inside a folder called /private/var/folders.
On inspecting this folder, it would seem that all of its contents are subfolders with "cache" or "tmp" in them. I assume these are all temporary files and caches, using my incredible genius discerning skills.
Question is, can I safely just trash the entire contents of this /folders/ directory? Some of these caches and logs have grown to gigantic sized, the entire folder is about 200MB at this stage, and they remain even though I used Onyx and Cocktail to clear out caches.
exactly what is this directory used for and which caches are they? They're obviously not the same caches as you find in /Library/Caches or ~/Library/Caches/, so what's the difference? Can they safely be gotten rid of? When running cocktail, one of the options is to ignore the caches of audio units and such, I work often with DAWs so I was just wondering, what good does a "cache" do for these plugins, and why wouldn't you want to clear them from time to time?
EDIT: Also I did a full and complete backup of my entire HD using Carbon Copy before I started my maintenance session so I'm ok with taking risks, if there's a slight possibility of this causing problems. I'd just like to know what might happen first.
