I have a browsing habit that is incompatible with marriage and having Private Browsing available is a very big temptation. I was able to remove Private Browsing from Safari 3 but am unable to find out how to remove it from version 4. I have Snow Leopard and have installed Xcode Tools. It seems that most of the browsers are starting to add Private Browsing to their software.
I've noticed that my kids have been using private browsing a lot lately and i don't like that, I want to know if there's any way to take it off the menu, that and the ''view all history'' button, because they can also erase sites seen there. I tried xcode, but after downleading a Safari 4.0.5 I can't use it anymore, look: Xcode doesn't work with Firefox either and I don't know what to do.
Is there a way via an add-on or setting to have Safari perform a "Reset Safari" when you close Safari and/or have "Private Browsing" enabled when you a launch Safari? Similar to the functionality that FireFox has where you can clean up automatically after your session using "Clear Private Data." In FireFox there is a preference for it but I didn't see anything like that in Safari - leading me to believe there might be a hack or add-on that will do it.
I like to use private browsing. Why is it after I set up my top sites and then use private browsing, if I open another window (command, n), I'll lose my top sites. Before I leave top sites, I make sure that I'm done editing and that the thumb tack is blue and not black which I'm told saves the sites. So what's going on? I'm actually at the Apple Store and the trainer at my personal projects sessions just doesn't know why this doesn't work. Anyone know how I can keep my top sites while I use private browsing?
In Safari 5, cookies from private browsing session aren't being erased after closing the private browsing session. The private session pages don't appear in the history, so that much works; I have no idea if the cache is being emptied. Is anyone else having this problem? I've uninstalled the add-ons I had (ClickToFlash, Glims) and turned off the new Safari Extensions, so I'm ruling them out as the problem.
MacBook Pro 13" 2.4 GHz (early 2010), Mac OS X 10.6.4, Safari 5.0 (6533.16)
I have tried the "dscacheutil -cachedump -entries Host" terminal command but it just comes back with "-bash: dscacheutil: command not found". Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or if there is a different command to use? I have a Mac laptop if that means anything, it's about 1.5 years old!
It appears as though there may be some suspicious activity occurring on the family computer. Firstly, "private browsing", "reset safari" and "empty cache" all appear under the edit menu in safari. I don't recall having seen them earlier, does this mean they have been recently used or is it part of the standard menu? Also, in the internet history whilst no webpages can be found there are some obscene jpegs. Images found in the internet history, have they been deliberately viewed or is it possible that they find their way there behind the scenes?
I'm trying to create an automator that will open safari, enable private browsing, go to my site, and log myself in. The problem is I need a terminal command line that will ensure private browsing is enabled.
I usually use the private browsing feature on safari but sometimes when I google something it shows near the searches how many visits I've made and when, even when Ive used private browsing. how do i cleat this kind of history?
Purchased myself a 27" iMac from Apple about a week ago. Everything is all good and fine - except my private browsing on Safari doesn't seem to work.It works fine on my Macbook, but for some reason on my iMac, when I turn it on, it works - but then when the computer restarts and is used again, it's turned off
Before Yosemite I never had a problem with using Private Browsing window in Safari - now it seems to be designed to log you out as much as possible- but that's another question..I'm having is that private windows block the top of the screen so it's impossible to login to certain web sites (PayPal, Facebook..), basically any site who's login is at the very top of the screen. It will work just fine in regular safari window.
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
I ran a browser variability test at This website here are the results
While visiting web sites your browser reveals private information about you and your computer. It sends information about previous sites you have visited. It may also save special cookies on your hard drive that have the purpose of directing advertising or finding out your habits while web surfing.
Dose anyone know how to make safaris PB feature private ?
I did a terrible mistake by deleting the whole of /private file using daisy-disk. The file probably would not have been in the trash as they had warn me beforehand, saying that it will be deleted forever. Can anyone tell me how I can solve thi s problem without losing my data, as I have tons of important files inside?
The symptoms is: The flash videos are only display with a full red bar and nothing happen, no video no sound nothing. The Flash player was upgrade with 126.96.36.199. before safari 5.1.7. I have an iMac with SL, and a Macbook with SL too. However after I upgraded safari 5.1.7 the flash videos are not display correctly, (only videos). The same happen in both computers. I need to tell you that I follow all the possible recommendations that I founded in internent. I uninstall flash pug-in many times. I restore both. I switch many buttons and options like "reset safari", "empty cahe", "block pop-up windows", "enable java-script", "enable java". I turn off and on the firewall. I switch all the options in the flash player plug in preferences. And nothing. I turn on and off the plug ins. In fact I tried all the possibilities in the preferences menus from the programs.
In one occasion I had a glimpse of functionality for only one hour without problems after I reinstall safari from the Apple website, but only worked until I turned off the computer. The next day was the same problem. After I fought with safari 5.1.7 and the plug-in flash player 188.8.131.52. Now I noticed something wired, only when I switch the "Private browsing" option in safari is when the videos are displayed correctly.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this. Its pretty random can be 2 or 3 times in 5 minutes or can be evey half hour. Just got a MBP 13" installed snow leopard. In the background I have messenger for mac and entourage running it does not seem to coincide with new messsages or emails. Im using Firefox as browser, which is regularly freezing.
I've had my MBP for about a year and recently I noticed that when I open Safari or Firefox it takes FOREVER to load a page.Even a small page like Google! I tried a reset for both browsers but that didn't help.I did some maintenance but no help there either.
This is my first Mac so I wanted to ask if I'm missing something.. should I be doing something maintenance-like that I'm not?
Now one of my favorite things about the air is the ability to swipe instead of clicking forwards and backwards. I'd like to try Firefox, however unless I can install some sort of add-on, allowing me to swipe, it's just not going to work for me. My question is, does such an add-on exist?
the Firefox addons on Mozilla's website work on OSX when using Firefox? I just wanted to make sure since I like using all of the apps on my firefox configuration and was thinking about buying a mac. I know a lot of 3rd party apps that aren't specifically made for Mac at times will not work
I've got an old iBook G4 that I'm using as a file server. I've set up public/private key SSH authentication on the machine. Here are the steps I've followed: Create a non-admin user account on the iBook. ('craig'). Log in on the iBook physically, and create a public/private key combination that is password protected. I was very careful to remember my password. Add the public key to authorized_keys2, which is the file specified in /etc/sshd_config I used a USB thumbdrive to transfer the private key to my Macbook. I tried to log in to the iBook using:
It prompts me for a password, but entering it properly does not grant access, the window just pops up again. Running in verbose mode, I see:
Code: debug1: Authentications that can continue: gssapi,publickey,keyboard-interactive debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /Users/Craig/.ssh/id_dsa_craig debug1: Authentications that can continue: gssapi,publickey,keyboard-interactive debug1: Trying private key: /Users/Craig/Desktop/craig/id_dsa debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed debug1: read PEM private key done: type <unknown> debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed debug1: read PEM private key done: type <unknown> debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed debug1: read PEM private key done: type <unknown>
First, it's trying to use a public key in my .ssh folder that I don't specify. Second, when it finally gets around to using the private key I suggested, authentication fails. I can post my sshd_config file if you think it will help, but I don't want to clog the tubes.
With Safari 5 if I open a second tab and choose a bookmark folder and "Open in Tabs" the original active tab disappears. I can get back to the original tab if I go back in the history and thus closing the tabs from the bookmark folder. So my question is there anyway to keep my current tab while still loading all the bookmarks in that folder in tabs?
I have been using Safari faithfully since it was released, and in the last week it has developed a strange problem. I can't recall doing anything different that would have caused this problem, but now whenever I try to load a secure website (https), I get the error message "Safari could not load the page https:xxxx because it could not connect to the server." I have tried resetting Safari, but that didn't fix the problem. I have also thrown away the following files (Safari_1.2.pkg, Safari (folder), Safari (application), and com.apple.Safari.plist) and reinstalling a new version of Safari, also without success. I should add that Internet Explorer will always load the pages that choke Safari, but I hate using this program. Has anyone ever heard of this before, and does anyone know how to fix it? Here is a link to the error message I get when I try to log in to my .Mac account:
