MacBook Pro :: Deciding Whether To Get 2.8Ghz Or I7?
Jul 31, 2010
i am deciding whether to get 2.8Ghz or I7. The 2.8Ghz is now on sale, and it is about 550 cheaper and it will be purchased by the dept for me. The I7 is a bit harder since is past 2k limit. So my question is, between 2.8Hz and I7, how much is the difference?
I don't do a lot of things that need that much power but i just the bleeding edge I wonder if anyone can help me the bench mark between 2.8Ghz and I7.
I'm considering upgrading my iMac to a Mac Pro using my ADC discount late this summer. I have to have a Mac for my major, as I use a lot of OSX-only programs. However, when looking at all the benchmarks available for the programs I'll use, it seems that half do better with the higher-clocked 2.66 4.core, and half do better with the lower-clocked 2.26 8-core. I'm a pretty big gamer, and so if I'm buying this computer anyway, it'll probably be replacing a PC as my "gaming rig."
And, so, I'm thinking of letting that be my deciding factor. Now, I know that the workstation processors aren't meant for gaming. But, that's not my question. What I'm wondering is, while it seems 99% of games out right now prefer a higher clocks to anything else, would it be wise to purchase the 8-core (thus, even more cores than the currently underutilized 4-cores) model to future proof my system for gaming? Other than GTA IV, will we start to see games in the next year or two that really start pushing 4+ cores?
I just got a second Macbook Air that is Rev A SSD (instead of Rev B... But at least screen is flawless...) And since I still have HDD Rev A at hand as well, if anyone is interested in asking me to do some kind of benchmark one wants to try, now is the time. (I usually don't do much of these stuff, so tell me exactly how I can do it.)
I wouldn't be holding the HDD in about 5 days, so, I can only do it in those days. So far I like the app icon only bounce once for most of the app's initial launch.
i need to replace my 6 yrs old Powerbook G4 and need to decide between the new entry level 2.53ghz advertised at $1578 after rebate at Club Mac or the refurbished 2,8ghz from apple.com at $1699 plus tax and shipping ($1780) total
I usually do lots of photoshop and now I got a high def Canon camcorder and want to get into Final Cut Pro.
Whats my best option? the new one with lower price and less features or the refurbished one with more power and 2 video chips.
I am just about to hit Submit on an order for the 15" 2.8GHz MBP and am getting slightly chilled (not quite cold) feet! Thoughts going through my head of...Is now a good time to buy this? Should I get a lower spec model to save a few bucks? Will I be happy with the resolution?
Anyway just need some encouragment from anyone who has had these thought too before buying an expensive toy (I say "toy" because I have an iMac that works just fine but think that a little mobility cannot be a bad thing).
I?m planning on purchasing a 15 inch MacBook Pro, my wife is a teacher so I?ll be purchasing it through the edu site. I was planning on getting the middle 2.66GHz model and upgrading to the 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive. But I see that I can get the 2.8GHz model with the 512 Vram and the same 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive for $160 more. I know for my needs I really don?t need the 2.8GHz, the 2.66GHz model will be fine for me. I was just wondering if it makes sense to spend the extra $160 for the possible extra resale value when I sell it, probably 3 years down the road. Does thinking in those terms make any sense?
Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 15.4-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display (1440 x 900 pixel) 4GB (2 x 2GB) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM 320GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD?R DL/DVD?RW/CD-RW) NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory $1529
Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17-inch high-resolution LED-backlit antiglare widescreen display 4GB memory 500GB hard drive 8x SuperDrive (DVD?R DL/DVD?RW/CD-RW) ExpressCard/34 slot Built-in 8-hour battery NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB Illuminated keyboard $1799
Which would be the better choice? Is the price difference justifiable?
I am a photographer so I do a lot of tethered shooting through capture one and a lot of photo editing in Photoshop. I have an eizo 24" external display I can hook up to but I feel the 17" with its high resolution and anti glare would be useful for location shoots so my question: Is the higher price and old technology worth it for the bigger antiglare screen and bigger harddrive for what I am using it for?
I know there is ways to run a xbox 360 into the macbook, but I was wondering how exactly. I have a 2.8ghz unibody pro. What is the cheapest and best way to do this?
I am trying to sell my Rev. A MBA to get a Rev. C 2.13GHz 128GB SSD. Looking to read comments from people who did the same. Can Rev. C finally play a movie without skipping frames? Can it run 4-5 apps without the fans kicking up to 6,000 rpm? Also the iSight on the Rev. A is a POS. Have they upgraded it to a better one?
i am just about to buy a 15-inch: 2.8GHz macbook pro, i am wanting to be able to play games like fallout 3, and i was wondering if the 15-inch: 2.8GHz will be comparable to an xbox 360 at all?, as int eh refresh rate and graphics? if it will be and if it runs smoother this will seal me into buying one. also will i be able to play the fallout game using an xbox 360 controller with a wireless pc dongle on a macbook pro? also will playing games such as fallout drain the battery extremly quick on a macbook pro?
I just took home a MBP from the local Apple Store.
Is it normal for the palm rest area, mainly the portion under the control/option/command button to turn warm? I have used many MBPs at my office, and they seem to be very cool.
It is a TAD uncomfortable to rest my wrist on it, unsure if it is common problem or if it is acceptable.
Currently just surfing, and emailing. Using 9400M.
I currently have a 2.4ghz imac and a hp mini netbook. I'm looking at the Macbook Air units as a eventual replacement for my netbook but I can't decide between the apple 1.8ghz refurb SSD model or the 2.13ghz new SSD model.
Apple on Wednesday introduced a new build-to-order option for MacBook Pros that lets users configure the systems with a faster Core i7 processor and also released software updates for the new MacBook Air, Aperture, Java, and Pro KitBuried by the unveiling of the new 11.6- and 13.3-inch MacBook Airs was a quiet update to Apple's professional notebooks that will let customers custom-configure the machines with even faster Core i7 processors. For an additional $200, customers can upgrade the high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro to a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor from a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 chip. The same upgrade is also available for the sole 2.53GHz 17-inch model for a $400 premium. An upgrade on that model to a 2.66GHz Core i7 remains,

I just put 2 sticks of 512mb in my g5 with these specs pc3200r-30330, the machine doesn't recognize them. I notice that the existing ram got this on the label pc3200u-30330. Pease someone tell me the difference between these 2.
I know what to expect from the 2.8ghz model since you guys can see from my sig of what my previous mac pro setup was like but what do you guys think about the 3.0ghz model?
I remember at times even though the 2.8ghz model was overkill I kind of regretted for a while for not getting the even 3.0ghz.. anyone here whos gotten the 3.0ghz regret it or is it not worth it?
Though I love buying new stuff (and that Blackbook is so damn sexy) I just want to stick with my Single 1.8Ghz G5. I get soo fed up with the problems I face when I'm surfing the web.... which is ALL I DO!
My G5 has 1GB of memory and 160HDD and am still running 10.3.9. All I do is surf the web; so I don't want to buy a new Mac. Is it 10.3.9 that sucks... or what? I am faced with A SURPLUS of "Safari Unexpectedly Quit" signs and MYSPACE never loads right and hardly ever loads photos on myspace pages.
If it's 10.3.9 thats messing my Mac up, I'll get 10.5 the day it comes out and 1GB more of memory. Otherwise I'll get a Blackbook... but I just rather not spend that money.
The HD2600XT is, well, old..I want to get a new graphics card for my mac pro, but I don't want to pay the premium for mac only cards, I've read that you can flash a 8800GT to a mac card, but they're nowhere to be found anymore, which of the currently available cards can be flashed to be a mac compatible cards? I want to be able to use just that card only...
I recently was given an old 2x1.8Ghz PPC G5 in order to build a personnal server but I have troubleshooting with CPU's temps that are really too hot (75?C with no app open, only Finder).
I know these temps are not that "hot" but I can't imagine what it would be when I'll open Safari, iGetter, iTunes, CyberDuck, Adium and Photoshop CS4...).
I first unmount everything, blown inside some bottled air to make sure there were no dust creating overheating inside and remount everything.
Installed Leopard (last OS installable on PPC machines), made the last updates possible and restart.
Everything is working well althought this CPU's temp is so damn high and fans's speed are still at 300rpm. I was looking for some app that would do the same as SmcFanControl for Intel based Macs but for PPC's ones.
After many internet searches on many forums I finally admitted there were no software able to set fans's speed, the only way was manually editing the AppleFan.kext integer's values.
WhatI did, reducing the integer values to lower rates (256x multiples), then restarted the Mac but nothing happens. As I check the changed values, they indeed are the ones I edited but the fans still are at 300 rpm and the CPU's temp 75?C...
Does somebody have any solution for that issue, I feel I checked everything that was possible but nothing seems to work.
G'Day I'm a graphic designer looking at getting a Mac Pro. I'll be running CS3.3 with inDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver & Flash open at all times. I was after some advice regarding the specs. Do I really need Two 2.8GHz Quad Core's to run the above fast and efficiently or would One 2.8 with extra RAM do the trick? I spoke to a techy mate of mine and he assured me one would be enough (he said Two was major overkill unless I'm doing 3D rendering etc).
i recently bought a used imac g5 1.8ghz version 10.3.5.
is there any way i can change the processor to an intel processor as i cant seem to upgrade my os (and a lot of other programs) running on the current version.
Just picked up a 24" iMac on clearance and the Internet seems to hang up and just be a bit slower in general compared to my 4yr old MBP. I can't really get a cable to it so I'm using a Belkin N1 router. Is there anything I can do to see if it's the router or possibly the iMac?
