MacBook Pro :: Dead Usb / Wont Detect Anything
Dec 6, 2009
I have been moving over the week and when i was setting up, i accidentally plugged the wrong ac adapter into my usb hub.
the next thing i notice, the usb is no longer working. keyboard, mouse, etc, not working, the other ones are
initially, the wifi card went out to with the other usbs. i did two reboots and the wifi and other usb ports came back.
the one where i plugged in the usb from the hub is dead
is there an easy fix for this? im pretty sure there isnt but i had to ask. how much will apple care charge to replace the usb?

I was surfing the web, and suddenly the wheel started spinning and my MacBook locked up. I tried rebooting, only to see a folder with a question mark on it. So I tried to boot from the DVD and use Disk Utility to repair my HDD. But Disk Utility didnt detect my hdd. So I assumed that the drive was dead and bought another one and istalled it.
The new hdd was not recongized by my machine either. Then I took the old hdd and installed it in a external case which connects to the computer with USB and I managed to boot OS X from it.
Anyone knows how I can make my MacBook detect my internal SATA drive?

My MacBook Pro (15-inch i7 Early 2011) won't detect an external display using an apple mini displayport -> VGA connector using 10.7.3.All cables and the monitor are fine because my white macbook detects the LG monitor without any problem.I have read and tried every 'sollution' suggested on the internet, but all fail. Since my MBPro can't even detect my Sony LCD TV (my white macbook does) i suspect it's a firmware/hardware issue.I want to buy a thunderbolt display, but am not sure if i can spend all this money when even this simple VGA connection won't work. My MacBook Pro won't detect my SanDisk USB, I recently had the same problem with a card reader. Initially, I thought it might just be the card reader but now I'm thinking it is an issue with my MacBook.

I have a macbook pro (penryn) that just stopped working. I believe the hard drive just died on me because whenever I try to boot up, I just hear this clicking sound. I think I may have a bootable backup I made with SuperDuper! a while back on my external hard drive. I tried connecting it to my MBP but it wouldn't detect the drive. I only get the mouse cursor when I hold down the option key at boot.
Does anyone know if this may be a known defect? Do you think Apple will replace the hard drive for me?

I have a 2011 MBP (thunderbolt) that I've had for about a year now. I use it daily at work, with an external LCD monitor connected with a mini-dvi -> DVI, no problem, except for the occasional need to restart when first connected.
However, at home I have an AOC Razor 24" monitor that until recently was connected to my home PC via HDMI, working just fine. However, my PC died and now I would very much like to be able to use this monitor at home until such a time when I get around to finding a desktop replacement. My MacBook Pro, however, has completely different ideas it seems... It completely refuses to recognise the monitor. I don't get the blue "flash" and it doesn't show up int eh display panel at all, not "sleeping" or otherwise, it simply looks as if it's not there.
Having trawled the forums, I've done the Jan/Feb firmware update, I've tried two different HDMI converters (One the Moshi from my local Apple retailer, the other a no-name brand converter, which works fine elsewhere), I've even tried a mini-dvi -> DVI -> HDMI converter (I know, I didn't expect it to work, but when you're at then end of your wits, you're at the end of your wits ). I've gone through three HDMI cables and tried an assortment of "black magic" solutions found on the net, with the adapter half-way plugged in, resetting the PROM, closing/opening the lid, running gfxCardStatus ( just in case it did something ) and checking the monitor elsewhere.
The only thing I haven't done (that I can think of) is swap the actual MBP,however, as mentioned, I use an external DVI monitor every day, so it doesn't seem likely that that's where the problem is... I'm guessing it's got to do with how the monitor handles HDMI or some such thing but I don't seem to be able to find much of a comment from anyone else on the net, so here I am... I considered sacrificing a goat at full moon, but I'm not entirely convinced that'll do much either and I upgraded to Lion as I saw a throwaway comment somewhere from someone, indicating that that might or might not have helped them with a slightly similar problem... So this problem now spans 10.6 AND 10.7...Â

I have a Macbook pro (OSX 10.4.11) and all of a sudden it stopped detecting a fairly new Jump/Flash drive that up until now worked fine. The icon doesn't show up on the desktop or in the Macintosh HD window.
The flash drive has "Dane-Elec" printed on it and is 4GB. I've tried it a number of times and nothing. The drive does still work on other computers, and my usb port is working properly with other devices.
The flash drive doesn't seem to show up in System Profiler and my Disk Utility has been "gathering information" for about 5 minutes now." Everything else is working fine with the notebook.

I have a 13" MBP and it won't detect my external display. It works fine on my sister's whitebook using, but won't detect at all on the MBP. I've went to "detect displays" under system preferences, played around with the cable, and made sure the monitor is on. It work's flawlessly on my sisters. What's wrong? Any suggestion on what I should do? I'm losing my mind right now. The screen on the MBP goes blue for a sec when the external display is connected, but then just goes back to it's original desktop.

I have a macbook with leopard osx and use it frequently for presentations and so on. I have connected it to several monitors and projectors a hundred times and it has worked fine since last night.
Last night, I have connected my mac to a monitor with vga cable but it did not detect it and instead a constantly flickering blue screen came up and never went. I am sure the cables are fine.

Also, I think I downloaded an old version of Messenger for Mac.
It probably have no sort of malware or viruses but assuming it may have, does the "sandboxing" technique by Apple prevent any malware from interfering with my mac. And does deleting tha old version clear any malware associated with it as well?Â

I just heard about Flashback and wonder if my computer (or possibly iPhone) is infected. My iTunes account was recently hacked and I received over $70 in charges for purchases I did not make. I was told that Flashback can and does hijack usernames and passwords. I installed and ran iAntiVirus but it didn't pick up anything. I also have an iPhone and an iPad that I access my iTunes store from quite frequently.

I have a Macbook Pro mid 2009 running Mavericks. I have an old 23" Cinema Display that uses a big chunky adaptor (ADC?) with a dual USB and Thunderbolt cable and it works well with it, however, I just bought a new Thunderbolt 27" display and it just won't detect it. I also notice that a lacie drive in the same Thunderbolt slot won't show up either. The old Cinema Display does still work however using that same slot so it's not actually dead. Puzzled! Â
I know this MBP is probably one of the first generation to have Thunderbolt but I've never used it for anything other than the old Cinema Display adaptor.Â

This is my first Mac. I cannot get it to detect my external display:Â It is an ASUS PA248Q, manufactured Aug 2012.
The HDMI cable according to my Amazon history is at least 1.3c from 2010, "Fanatic Digital Imperial Series Gold-Plated HDMI Cable (6 feet)". It works with perfectly connecting an AmazonTV box to an old Samsung TV, with vivid clarity, unlike our cableTV signal.
Just in case, I have a new HDMI cable on order, which claims to be of newest standards. The Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) has the standard Intel Iris from the Haswell chips, as well as Nvidia GT 750M, the latter which I don't think has been used yet.
The ASUS display says:Â HDMI NO SIGNAL.Â
I have tried shutting them down and replugging the cable. I don't know what the ideal order is. The Macbook Pro is plugged into AC power, as suggested.
In System Preferences>Display, I press the Option key to select "Detect Displays" option (seriously unintuitive).Â
I have also tried resetting the NVRAM:
I shut the machine down. Pressed the power button, then quickly held the quadruplet: Option-Command-P-R (a double handful) and waited for the machine to chime a 2nd time. Tried to detect external display no luck.Â
Next, I reset the SMC:
I shut the machine down. Then I pressed Shift-Control-Option-Power  for about 5 to 10s. Then I turned on the machine normally. NVRAM & SMC steps were from an old youtube video, as the instructions I had did not explain how to do so clearly.

I have a Mac Book Pro, my partner a Mac Book Air. I bought a thunderbolt to HDMI cable from eBay so my partner could plug her Air into the TV. When the cable arrived, it would not detect our LG TV from either computer. So a bit of playing around and this is what I found. Â I plugged the cable from my MBP direct to the HDMI port on the TV and nothing, no signal detected. I also tried from the MBP to the HDMI port on the amplifier of the surround sound system and again nothing. However, if I plug the cable from my MBP directly to the TV HDMI and select that corresponding HDMI port on the TV initially still nothing.
But if I then plug a normal hdmi-to-hdmi cable from my amplifier to the Mac Pro's HDMI port, suddenly the thunderbolt cable works and the Display Preferences sees the LGTV. I checked that the correct hdmi port was selected on the TV for the direct connection and I could even turn off my amplifier to make sure that I was not seeing the wrong signal and it still worked as long as the hdmi-to-hdmi was still connected at both ends. However, if I then unplug the HDMI cable from MBP or the amp, the thunderbolt port stops working as well and the TV displays "no signal detected".
It seems that there needs to be either a base signal or an earthing through the MacBook Pro's HDMI port for it to switch into an external monitor mode that will detect a thunderbolt to HDMI connection. This is sort of fine for my MBP as I had nothing working before but it seems a bit pointless having the HDMI cable plugged in as well as I might as well just use this in the first place. However, as my partner's Air only has a thunderbolt port and no HDMI port it still doesn't work with her MAC.

I recently bought an SSD vertex 64gb for only 200$ cad. Unfortunately, I do not have enough space to install the Soundtrack Pro components on this drive. I recently bought too an eSata powered cable and a express card esata who came with it. The hard drive can't be detect on my macbook pro unibody late 2008 2,4" but runs. I install the silicon image drivers non-SL and adding over that the SL drivers.
[URL] In that case, I want to know how to uninstall those drivers from silicon image 3132? I thought about another thing if it really not work eventually. The dvd-drive bay could be remplaced by an enclosure 2.5" for my factory 250gb 5400rpm.
[URL]
Second question, Does this other hard drive will take a lot more power?

I just installed windows 7 ultimate on my macbook via bootcamp. I installed all the drivers and everything seems to work perfect besides one thing; I can't connect to the internet with my WiFi. My iPhone has WiFi signal, and if I go back to the mac OS X side, my WiFi has signal. When I'm on windows 7 it doesn't even detect any wireless networks (I have quite a few around the house too.)

Just installed a new HDD into a macbook pro that was dropped. Seems fine, loads the disk and then says it can install the OS, i load up disk utility and theres no hard drive int he list just the optical drive and the DVD, its not the disk that came with the mac itself its either my proper retail one or the one that came with my personal older macbook which might be the issue. Ive taken apart and reconnected the HDD and all seems fine internally. Are there any issues that cause this except not using a full retail disk which im going to try later on, just wanted to rule everything else out.

I have bought Macbook Pro last year. Its 2.4 Ghz Intel Core i5 machine with 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Of late it used to go to sleep randomly even while working. Last week I took it to Apple store who was not able to diagnose the cause of the problem but as a precautionary measure has changed, as per him, a bus connecting harddrive to the logic board. However the problem was still not solved. Few hours ago suddenly the machine went off and on starting it I found that it is not detecting the batteries. On the battery icon it displays an X, states "no batteries are available" and randomly switches the power source from battery to adapter and back. There is no light on the adapter. [code]
