MacBook Pro :: Verbatim USB Flash Drive Stops Being Recognized
Apr 12, 2012
All of a sudden the other day, my Verbatim USB flash drive just stopped being recognized... it had been mounted, a TM backup made to it when all of a sudden I got an error stating that it had been improperly removed... it was like I had yanked it from the USB port.I tried unplugging it, reconnecting, rebooting, moving it to another computer... no luck. it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility Verbatim has agreed to replace it under warranty but I'm wondering if there's anyway that I can mount it again to retrieve the TM backups.

I have just started to have problems every time I go to sync my wifes and my IPhones, IPads and IPods. I-Tunes recognizes the units, begins to sync and shuts down ITunes every time I try and sync. I have reset our phones and have all the most current versions of ITunes and my accessories OS.

I purchased a new iMac a month ago. Often, the keyboard just stops working and the computer has to be restarted for the keyboard to work again. Another problem: Unless I plug my printer in with a USB, the Mac does not pick it up. The printer is a fairly new HP Officejet J5780.

Anyone using a verbatim expresscard ssd? I have a 32gb one, and it clashes with my wifi. If I have the card plugged in, I can't use the wireless network, and if I use the wireless network, I can't access the card (and any attempt to do so will automatically crash the wifi as well).
This is on a late 2008 macbook pro. The problem is there on both 10.5.8 and 10.6.2. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else is having the same issues, or if the card is somehow broken (i.e. if I should exchange it for another, or just get a refund).

I have a 2008 (2/2008) 24" aluminum imac that is not recognizing certain USB flash drives now. The drive (Sony 8gb) worked before but does not now. When started up with the drive in a USB port, system profiler will find it but disk utilities will not (nor does it appear on my desktop). I have tried all other USB ports in this computer with no results. This drive still works fine on all other macs in the house. This problem is isolated only to flash drives since all other USB accessories still function fine. I recently added a Sandisk imagemate all-in-one card reader to this system and suspect that this might have caused the problem since oddly enough, my Sandisk flash drive still works fine. The only driver I installed with this reader was the application start up button (to launch iphoto).

Here's my disc Burning info:

CD-Write:-R, -RW
DVD-Write:-R, -RW

I'm not sure but do I have I got a DL burner? I've tried Verbatim DL discs but the recorder spits them out midway through. Is the brand the problem or is it the burner?

I tried doing a few Google searches to find a resolution to this problem, but nothing that came up seemed to work, so I'm throwing this question out there. I recently bought a 16GB PNY metal attache for my 2011 MacBook Pro (OS X). That computer fails to recognize the drive. Here are a few notes:
1. I tested the drive on a windows vista computer, and that computer recognizes the drive. I can read/write from it on that computer.
2. Neither USB port on my apple is faulty; other USB devices function fine via both ports.
3. I have tried several solutions including:
a) Restarting
b) Powering off, unplugging the power cord, waiting 15 seconds, replugging the cord, and booting up the computer
c) Restarting WITH the drive in the port
d) Leaving the drive in for a while to see if it would eventually recognize it (no results)
e) Reformatting the drive to FAT32 to make sure it's possible for my mac to read/write from it

So I expanded a bootable .iso image of openSUSEx64 11.3 onto my 16GB USB thumb drive following the steps I found on a website. When I restarted the MacBook with the option key pressed, the USB drive did not appear. Why the USB drive's not being recognized at boot-up? Here is the website I used (option 4): URL

I've been having several problems with my mid-2009 MacBook Pro; 2 minute beachballs and failure to startup. So I've purchased a new new WD Scorpio Black thinking it was a HD issue, but after replacing my old HD with the WD, Disk Utility wouldn't recognize the new drive. So I searched around and found out that Hard Drive Cable failure is an issue on this certain MacBook. So I ordered a new Hard Drive cable and just replaced that today, thinking that my new HD would be recognized. However after going into Disk Utility via the OS X Install DVD, my new Hard Drive was still not recognized.

Have a mid 2009 13" 2.26 dual core. Started getting flashing folder with question mark icon and found hard drive failed. Tried two different drives, WD Scorpio Black 750GB 3GB/s 7200rpm and Seagate 500GB 3GB/s 7200rpm. Neither is recognized by the computer. What next? And yes I have the updated firmware.

I have a first gen white macbook core duo. I am trying to install a new 320GB Seagate HDD in my laptop to replace the 60Gb drive. I installed it but I can't get the OS to recognize the Hard disk when it is installed in the computer. I have no problems when it is installed in an external case. I have booted off the Leopard disk but it does not show a drive available to format, I booted off the original drive in the external case and the disk utilities does not show another drive attached. If I put the 320GB drive in the external enclosure, disk utilities recognizes it right away. I have formatted it with GUID format but it doesn't work when installed directly in the macbook.

Here is what is going on with my MacBook:
-If I insert a music CD, the CD drive spins it and makes noise. It does not open iTunes or even show it on the desktop. It is not recognized. Then the computer ejects the disc.
-My iDVD software seems to have taken a crap. I am prompted every time the computer boots up that iDVD has quit unexpectedly and gives the options of "relaunch" "cancel" or "report to Apple".
-This is the weird part: I was going to reinstall Leopard OSX from the disc. The computer reads the discs and the "X" screen pops up. I then try to go through to reinstall the software as it tells me that it will restart.
It restarts and then ejects the disc when the Apple logo pops up. Therefore I cannot reinstall the software. Does this sound like a software or hardware problem? Can the fact that iDVD is not working mean that my CD's would not play? Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do here? I am desperate and would like to know what other approach I should take before I put a new drive in.
White MacBook, 2yrs old. 500gbhd, 4g RAM.

Today, I was doing a time machine backup, and the backup failed. Ok, it's normal since the drive started updating the firmware. But after the firmware update failed (updater got stuck), the drive now spins, light on, but the MBP won't see it, and neither will the firmware updater. If so, what was the solution? Just have to go for the warranty?

I have been searching the internet for 3 days and finally gave up, besides buying another hard drive. Ill try to keep this short. i got Macbook C2D / OSX 10.4 / 80GB HDD What happened: I wanted to free up space on my macbook, so I removed my bootcamp partition buy using the bootcamp installer to merge the osx and winxp partition back together. The installer froze for 30min and i decided to manually restart (holding power button). What a mistake i made, on reboot i only get the folder with the "?" icon. Symptoms: OSX installer does not see a drive. None of the bootable linux recovery disk Ive tried can see the drive. WinXP, Win98 recover disks do not see the drive. Terminal "diskutil list" shows=
/dev/disk1
0: untiled *467.0 kb disk1
/dev/disk2
0: untiled *219.0 kb disk2
/dev/disk3
0: untitled *95.0 kb disk3..........

The title pretty much says it all: When booted in single user mode, I can't get my machine to recognize the USB drive. Here's what I did:
1. inserted usb stick (memorex 4GB traveldrive, msdos filesystem)
2. booted in single user mode (cmd+s after powering on)
3. mount -uw /
3. looked for usb device in /dev
4. ...it's not there! The USB drive shows up as /dev/disk1s1 after an ordinary boot, but in single user mode it's nowhere to be found. It's not just a name issue either: the list of devices that appear in /dev in single user mode is the same whether or not the USB stick is plugged in.
Even more confusingly, out of the 10(?) times I tried this it worked twice: /dev/disk1s1 actually appeared. mkdir /mydirectory; mount -w -t msdos /dev/disk1s1 /mydirectory worked fine, and I was able to read/write from the stick as usual. I have no idea what I did differently those two times. Does anybody know what's going on? I've got a MacBook2,1 running vanilla Leopard.

I have recently bought a Seagate external drive. It works fine for Windows over WIFI. But for the Mac, it only works when directly connected and is not recognised over WIFI - the drive is not listed under devices. It did when I first started the drive yesterday, when I managed to copy all my files onto the external drive via WIFI. But not today. Perhaps related to the software update I ran last night?

I have:
- Freecom ToughDrive Pro USB hard drive
- New MBP running Lion 10.7.3
When I plug the disk in an USB port in the MBP, the light that indicates operation starts blinking but very lighltly colored and the disk is not recognized by the computer. I have put data on it using iMac Snow Leopard. I have plugged the disk into a MBP running Snow Leopard and it works. I have also tried another Lion (older MBP) and it also works.
How come the disk is not mounted or shown in Disk Utility. Can it be a power issue?
I have noticed there a lot of similar posts in the forum and none has been satisfactorily solved. Is this a mayor Lion bug? If yes, how can I downgrade to Snow Leopard?

I just installed a new internal hard drive into my macbook as my old one was failing. Before doing this I backed up all of my information through Time Machine onto a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I've been using this external hard drive for the past two years and I've never had any problems with my macbook mounting it. Once I had all of my personal information backed up I took out the external hard drive and then proceeded to take out my old internal hard drive and installed the new one. I installed the Mac operating system and the Macbook started up just fine but when it came time to reload all of my personal setting using Time Machine my macbook didn't recognize that there was an external drive plugged in. I know it isn't the external drive as it mounts just fine on other laptops. how I can get my macbook to mount the drive so that I can transfer all of my information onto this new internal drive?

I have a Macbook pro 17" 2008 model, and I just bought a new 160gb Intel X-25m solid state hard drive. I installed it into the mac with no problem, but when I boot up with the OS boot disc 1, the drive doesn't show up in the "destination" screen. No drives are there. When I open Disk Utility the drive is there, and shown as read/write, but when I boot with option held down the drive isn't there either. I can't even do any repairs on the drive in the disk utility.
