MacBook Pro :: Using My MBP To Control My IMac?
Oct 17, 2010
Now, obviously I can use VNC, and I do...but let me explain.
I'm back at university this year and I've brought my iMac with me as well as my MacBook Pro. I have my MBP on one side of my desk and the iMac next to it. What I'd like to be able to do is move my mouse (using my MBP) onto the iMac screen and control it and use my MBP keyboard to enter data into it. I've tried Screenrecycler which allows me to use the iMac as a secondary screen to my MBP but the lag just isn't good enough to work with on a daily basis. I want the iMac to be it's own machine doing it's own thing, just using the input of my MBP.

I'm new here and was hoping for some feedback. I got a new 2.8 Imac and had it replaced after the Power Supply Position was idling at 82 degrees Celsius, and the top of the case felt very hot to the touch. The fans never "kicked in" even though it was that hot. Anyways, I got a replacement machine and the Power Supply Position now idles at about 68-70 degrees Celsius (much cooler), but the external portion of the machine still feels extremely hot. So my question is, how hot is too hot?? Is my machine normal and am I worried about nothing?? Should I be using SMC Fan Control?? Is the heat because of the 2.8 processor??

Just switched my new iMac and it has the dreaded dog whistle, not as pronounced as my previous 3 replacements which were last generation.
I was hoping the new rev would have ironed the atrocious quality control.
I still have yellow discoloration but I can't be bothered. My lady needs a computer and she doesn't want PC. I'll give it a few more days and if I can tolerate the whistle I'll hang on to this one.
At least there is no dead pixels.

Is smcFanControl still the best to use to increase rpm's on fans for macs? Or is there anything new out? This iMac get EXTREMELY HOT on the top left corner it can burn your hand how bad it is.The atual temps are within limits with istat but that excessive heat on the back left top corner is concerning me. If i keep my hand on it for more then 5 seconds it will actually burn my hand.

When I ask the iMac to speak a selection, it sometimes mispronounces words or goes between words too fast. Is there a way, like a special character or something, to change the way a voice speaks?

Today I was working with my iMac without any problem, suddenly the mouse pointer start behaving very odd, when I tried to click an icon, menu or whatever the mouse start moving not allowing me do the work, I changed the wireless mouse suspecting was a hardware problem but when I connected the USB mouse I got the same problem, then I shutdown the iMac but after starting I got the same problem. I suspect is a trojan virus but I heard that Leopard operating system is very robust and virus is not currently a problem.

I've been thinking of using an iMac as a video player in my workout room. I'd like it to be able to grab videos (tv shows) from my main iMac. I'd also use it to play dvd's.
I was thinking of buying a used G4 iMac to do this, but would like to be able to use a remote control to use Front Row.
First, can I use Front Row on iMac #2 to get videos from iMac #1?
Secondly, does the Apple Remote Controller work with a ppc G4 iMac?

Does anyone know if it's possible, and if so how, to stop my iMac from registering when I use my little white Apple remote (the one that comes with iMac, AppleTV etc)? Reason being when I go to run through my AppleTV menu my iMac registers each press as well.
I have the Remote app for my iPhone and iPad but I'd rather be able to use the Apple remote aswell for quick pauses etc., so as to not have to load the app just to pause, skip etc., if I'm using my iPhone/iPad for something else at the time.

What is wrong with this picture? The fans are running out of control constantly. This machine is sooo loud. The power supply was just replaced, which did little/nothing. Reset all ram/etc.

My i7 iMac arrived today with no screen issues and no major problems at all (after scouring the forums the past few weeks, I was a nervous wreck waiting for it). I ordered on Black Friday and believe I have one of the most recent batches with, I cross-my-fingers hope, none of the screen problems that have been reported. However, I am about to gouge my eyes out because of a blasted erratic mouse issue in OSX. I am using a Razer Naga (though it is still a problem with every other mouse I hook up) and regardless of the settings, the cursor is jumpy and impossible to control at times.
I am Bootcamp running Win7 64 and have zero mouse issues on that side of the computer. Its only when I boot into OSX that I have the mouse problems. I have tried the Naga drivers and two USB/Mouse shareware apps, all to no avail. Otherwise, the iMac runs like a dream. In WoW with Ultimate Settings I get 50 fps in Dalaran and 120+ out flying in the world. LotRO runs great as well -- with the recommended settings I am at around 60 fps at all times, even standing at the Prancing Pony in Bree.

I let my iMac sleep when not in use. I have a logitech harmony 550 remote control for my TV. If I press a button on the logitech remote it wakes up the iMac. I went to the bluetooth devices connected and it only shows the mouse and keyboard. How can I correct this issue. The remote control is infrared not RF. My iMac is a 27" Quad Core i7, magic mouse & wireless keyboard.

I recieved my 27" iMac a few weeks ago and everything has been perfect until a couple of days ago when the headphone jack stopped working.- The built-in internal speakers still work.- Cannot get any sound from any headphones/speakers attached.- Cannot adjust the volume when anything is plugged into the headphone jack. When I try a circle with a slash through it appears.- Under 'Sound' in system preferences the menu reads "Digital Out" and says that it has "no control properties"- Does not work when in Windows 7 under Bootcamp

Should I be worried?
My concerns are that it might be too close to the screen and that I paid $1000 for a problem. Is there any way that I might be able to fix it without going to the Apple Store?

when i look in fan control, it says that the left fan is moving at 2xxxrpm ..but my right fan says its moving at -1. is this normal? or is my right fan broken?
also...is this program safe to use? i tweaked the fan speed to 1900rpm (not sure what the default rpm is...)...this won't mess up my machine will it?
btw i have a 2.2ghz blackbook.

I noticed that my macbook was getting getting very hot every now and then, so I installed smcFanControl, and set it up, so that it would run at 1800 when it was on battery power, 2400 when it was plugged in, and 3500 for when i was making heavy use of it.Now, two days later, im hearing this weird sound when ever the fan reaches 1900rpm, and im really worried that i might have screwed up the fan. The macbook its only 2 months old, so the fan is practically new.

The actual Base Speed that results is always 100 RPM higher than the Base Speed I set in Fan Control. Now, this isn't hard to workaround, but I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing such behavior.I like to keep the MB at around 1200 RPM when I am on battery power in the cafe. It saves a lot of power, and there is a negligible increase in temperature (on the order of 3-5 degrees F), and Fan Control has been great for that.

I have an older PowerPC G5 with dual 1.8 GHz. Recently I replaced the Power Supply and now the two fans on the back run at high speed all the time. There is no heat problem anywhere. In fact after an hour or two of running I opened the case and everything was cool to the touch. Not even warm! Is there a way I can get the fans to slow down?

It works - the fan speed changes - for about half a second (maybe less) and then stops. Has anybody else had this problem?

New to the forum but had a good lurk before I bought my new MBP.
I have had it for around 10 days and it is an awesome bit of kit. I have it set up running bootcamp with Windows 7 32bit on the Bootcamp drive and Mac OS on the other partition.
I noticed that it has been running very warm - almost burn your hand on the back left hand side of the unit but only seems to get veruy hot in Winodws - under Mac OS the fans seem a little more active.
After a good search on the web I installed Lubbo's Fan Control.
I up'd the min fan speed from 2000 to 2500rpm but since installing the program my fans seem much more active. I have dropped the min rpm back down to 2000 but they still seem way more active.
MBP is currently running at 58c or 136f - does this seem hot?

we've successfully had (and have loved our macs since 1986)...first time i have ever seen this:
she opened the laptop - and it looked like someone was controlling her screen remotely...the mouse was moving around, hopping, fluttering...applications were changing, menus were being selected...all very random and jumpy we could not override the mouse ourselves
asfter a few restarts...we managed do a time machine backup...but are not sure what to do next.

For awhile now, my control key on my MBP 13" Mid 2010 hasn't been working. When I press the key, I get absolutely no response. I tried plugging in a keyboard to try it, and it worked on that external keyboard, but my computer's built in keyboard still wouldn't work. I've brought up the on-screen keyboard, and when I press done the control key, there is no change on screen.

Total count is 729GB but that includes, everything in iTunes, Games, Apps, Music, Video, Movies, TV Shows, etc. How does everyone manage this, because right now I have everything on one external hard drive, but it is getting hard to manage. I just ordered a MBA 13" with the 256GB but I think I am only going to transfer stuff I watch listen to and use each day. I seem to spend hours fighting this thing each week, and just when I thought I was organized I find something else. How is everyone managing theirs?

Can anyone recommend a good equivalent to smcfanconrol that works well for the new mbp 2.4 under bootcamp? I've searched and tried things, but none work as well or easily as SMC.
