MacBook Air :: Upgrade Hard Drive In Late 2010 Model?

Jun 22, 2012

I have a late 2010 Macbook Air, 13 inch, with the 126 gb hard drive. I was curious if there was a way to upgrade the hard drive at all. I know this isn't "officially" suported, but I've seen some compines online that claim to do it.

I haven't priced out the SSD drives or anything, so I'm not even sure if it's cost effective to upgrade.

IMac :: 27" I5 (late 2010) RAM Upgrade?

Nov 14, 2010

I've got a 27" imac i5, with 4 RAM slots. I do actually have 2x2Gb installed, but that's not enough to run windows 7 smoothly with Parallels.

I would like to upgrade the RAM. Can I buy 1x4Gb now, and add another 1x4Gb later? (short on money at the moment...)

The two original modules are installed in BANK 0/DIMM0 and BANK 1/DIMM0. Should I install the new module in any free slot available?

Another question: is this memory fine?

I read some topics about ram upgrade, but it's not clear wether you can add one single module...melagodo

MacBook Pro :: Scorpio Blue 320Gb Or 500Gb Upgrade

Jul 2, 2009

I am planning to purchase a 13" Macbook Pro base model (first Mac by the way), and I want to upgrade from the stock 160Gb HDD.

I don't really see myself needing 500Gb, but I have read that a higher density drive outperforms a lower density drive. Newegg currently has the 500 WD Scorpio Blue drive listed for $30 over the 320Gb edition. Will I see significant performance increase by going with the 500Gb model instead of the 320Gb one?

What about power consumption? Is one better than the other?

MacBook Pro :: Late 2010 Not Starting Up?

May 26, 2012

I'm so worried. I turned off my MBP as usual yesterday and when I tried to turned it on today I get a white screen with the Apple Sign and a loading bar which never ends up loading. Nothing like this has ever happened and I haven't made any hardware or software modifications on my MBP. I thought the days of my computer crashing were behind once I switched to Apple. Ugh I don't/can't afford to lose all my files. I also tried booting from the OS X disk and trying to repair the disk but it tells me it can't be done.

Hardware :: Vibrations In New MBP After 320GB Drive Upgrade

Nov 7, 2008

I recently put an upgraded hard drive in my new aluminum unibody MBP. I replaced the stock 5400rpm drive with a 7200 RPM 320 GB drive - a Western Digital Scorpio Black. I can feel a lot more vibration and I'm just wondering if this is normal. The drive upgrade and subsequent install went fine. It's mounted correctly and tight in the case. Has anyone else done this? Can you feel the vibration on your wrists more when typing? It's not annoying really, but a lot more noticeable. I took it in to the Apple Store recently and a genius commented that it was noticeable, but they don't have much experience with the new MB's and MBP's with 7200rpm drives yet, so he couldn't tell me if it was normal or not.

On another note - I get two ACL errors every time I run disk permissions. They say ACL not expected but found in "Applications" and "Library". They never go away not matter how many times I repair disk permissions. The genius said to ignore it, it's not a problem, and the web says the same thing pretty much. It's still annoying, and repairing permissions can take 5-10 minutes with this new drive.

MacBook Air :: Late 2010 Suddenly Crashes And Will Not Stay On?

Nov 30, 2014

I returned from a trip during which I used my MacBook Air (Late 2010) constantly.  Upon leaving the hotel I closed the computer and put it into my carrier and did not open it until arriving at home later that day.  There was moisture on the keyboard and screen at the corresponding position in an area about the size of a 50¢ piece,  I cleaned that up and turned the machine on and it booted up and then created. Several times it would turn off and on a few times without any input from me. At times it will boot up like all is well but with any keystroke it crashes to a black screen.  If I had to guess, I'd say the HD is toast.  It was replaced under warranty once already. The moisture is a complete mystery.

MacBook Air :: Cannot Install Windows 8 Consumer Preview On 11" (Late 2010)

Mar 10, 2012

I'm trying to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010 model) via Boot Camp assistant. I've hacked the Info.plist of the Boot Camp Assistant to allow it to create a bootable USB installer drive. After successfully creating the USB, the laptop proceeds to reboot itself but it never loads up the Windows installer. However, if I restart it while holding Option, and selecting EFI boot, the installer loads up. However, once it loads, I cannot install Windows 8 Consumer Preview to the Boot Camp partition because of this error: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. WIndows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS. Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

MacBook Pro :: Why Isn't There 512gb Flash Storage On A Retina 2.3

Jun 27, 2012

I'm toggling between the big three MBPs:  Retina display doesn't really jump at me [I'm old], but the legacy Pro with 512GB SSD is just as expensive with less RAM than the Retina 2.6.  The 2.3 is more economical but only offers 256GB flash and I already have over 300GB on my current MBP.  I am a writer and have extensive files of research, loads of music and photos [hobbies]. I don't play games on my MBP…mostly writing and some use for Keynote presentations.  I confess that I don't get the daisy-chain deal and have never used a HD for additional storage, just back-ups.  I've never had to concern myself with external storage till now. Is that a major consideration [or a steep learning curve] or am I doing the pixie-dust drill Apple marketing wants us ALL to do?

MacBook Pro :: ExpressCard SSD Or 6GB RAM Upgrade For Late 2007?

Aug 5, 2010

I've been following many threads on Mac Rumors for a while and thought I finally post something (hopefully) useful for others and in hopes that I can get a meaningful answer. So please don't flame me if this may be a newbie question... here I go:

So I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz Late 2007 computer, equipped with a 500GB WD Scorpio Blue HD and 4Gb of RAM. What I do with this computer primarily is graphic design and editing (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Final Cut Pro, etc...) and some amature music production (Reason, Garageband, Djay...)

I've followed the 6gb/8gb RAM upgrade forum for a long while for Mac products and finally bought myself a 6GB upgrade kit from Other World Computing. My package arrived today, and I hate to admit but I'm afraid to upgrade the RAM because of the slight hit/miss ratio I heard about using it. It's usually a good thing to upgrade to something higher I know, but I read that even if I did upgrade, I would only be using about 3GB worth of memory on it and not the full 6GB. Plus, I would lose the dual channel architecture doing this... if that did make a big difference to my heavy use of RAM.

Just today I learned about ExpressCard SSD's and how they can act like a separate HD in themselves. I'm highly interested in a very economical 64GB ExpressCard I researched. They're super fast and sound like a better alternative to RAM upgrading, especially if I can only use a max of approx. 3GB of RAM on my model computer.

So after all of my gibbering and jabber, here's the question:

From your experienced perspective, what's a better option for me to take...

1) Use the 6GB RAM upgrade?

2) Buy an ExpressCard SSD and use memory intensive programs on that?

3) Use the 6GB RAM and buy the ExpressCard SSD together?

How Much Memory Can Upgrade With MacBook Pro Late 2011

Apr 8, 2012

I am wondering how much memory I can upgrade with my MacBook Pro Late 2011. I went on Apple.com and they only offer up to 8GB of Ram for my model when I looked around and saw that on OWC ( MacSales.com) which is a very excellent reliable source for all your Apple Products. But, I was able to find a 16GB of Ram for my MacBook Pro Late 2011 and it said it can be used for my MacBook Pro.Basically Apple says its only up to 8GB of Ram while I see other people have 16GB of Ram for the same year as mine but the only difference is the the size of the computer. Anybody could give me a answer with this question as I dont want to buy the 16GB of Ram and it not working for my computer. url...

MacBook Pro :: 2010 MBP HDD RAM Upgrade Or SSD?

Jul 31, 2010

I am trying to decide whether I should Install a 120/128GB SSD or add a Larger hybrid HDD with an extra 2 gig RAM upgrade. I currently have a 2010 MBP with 4 gigs of Ram and a stock 5400 rpm HDD. I am thinking of replacing the HDD with either the Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB or the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB. I could also use that money to purchase a Seagate XT Hybrid 500GB drive and then use the extra money to purchase a 4GB stick to replace one of the stock 2GB sticks. What's are your thoughts? What is the speed difference between the hybrid and the SSD's? If you chose the SSD, which one?
