MacBook Pro :: Track-pad No Longer Clicks?
Jun 6, 2012
The track pad on my Mac BookPro no longer clicks. I can still tap to click but if I push down on the track pad I cannot get it to do anything. I am currently living in Thailand. What should I do?

My trackpad stopped recording clicks all of a sudden. I'm not sure I changed anything at all, I'm on Lion. I also have a wacom tablet connected and the mouse that comes with it works just fine, but the laptop's own trackpad and the magic trackpad I have on the desk are not able to record clicks anymore?

When importing CDs track names no longer are found. This is a problem that has just begun. I use iTunes to download audio books to my computer and then move them to my mp3 player. I can enter the name of the CD and the disk number, myself, but on importing the track names are listed as track 01 etc. That means when put the book on my mp3 player I can only load one disk at a time or the first disk is overwritten by the second, etc.
I've never had this problem. The last time I downloaded a CD was August 2014. When I tried to import two weeks ago, all of a sudden the track names were not there.
I have a Macbook air; OSX 10.9.5; iTunes 12.01.26
I thought perhaps that there had been an update during the 3 months I had not been importing, but I don't know how to check on updates. I've queried this site and found that over the years people have had this problem, but I didn't understand their solutions (all were on earlier versions of iTunes).

Sometimes in ALL programs (so far) I am not able to click certain stuff. For example, when I'm in Safari (4.0) I try to click a link but nothing happens. It shows me the clicking finger thing and I am able to scroll (I can not use the two finger scroll on the trackpad only the sidebar) and I am able to move the window around. I have found that I can fix it sort of by clicking the link millions of times. Oh also I can not right click the link but I can right click everywhere else.
I thought maybe it might be some of my 3rd party software but I doubt it. The only things I have installed are geekTool and this Cleardock replacement called Mirage.

I have a Macbook All of a sudden this morning my cursor does not actually select what I hover over. For example: to creat a new tab in my browser, I can't actually click on the "+" symbol to get a new untitled tab, I have to click about 1/4" to the right of the "+" sign to select it. This occurs with everything -- typing into text boxes, clicking "compose" to write a new email in Gmail -- everything! This is really annoying, it occurs when I click the mouse button and also when I tap on the track pad. (Clicking through this paragraph to edit this question has been a nightmare!

Since I bought my Macbook Pro 13" 2.53 I replaced my HDD to 500GB 7200, but since then I can hear clicks from time to time and my macbook lags at the same time if I am watching a movie or anything. I found a solution been explained by some PPL but its like no one trust the solution yet, now I tried it on my Snow Leopard, and I can say my problem is solved.
1- Find the attachment and unzip it somewhere on your HDD (I placed mine in Applications Folder)
2- Open your Terminal (You will find it at Applications>Utilities
3- locate your folder at the terminal by CD command
4- Once your at the folder where you placed the file write this command: hdapm disk0 max
It has to come back with successully message to you.

I have a Unibody MacBook Pro (Summer 09) and I'd say my trackpad registers about 25 of every 30 clicks. So sometimes I click something (a link, etc.) and nothing happens but then I click it again and it works. The multi-touch gestures still work as advertised, just the clicks aren't working. I updated all of the stuff that was in the Software Updater and nothing's changed.

I have early '09 uMBP17 and I'm experiencing one of the issues which apparently plagued first TrackPads: when I press a TrackPad it clicks, yet application doesn't register the mouse click. It happens 50/50. If I press harder/hold pressed a bit longer - it works more often. Still very very annoying.
I have seen that issue with late 2008 MBPs was resolved with trackpad firmware update (and my uMBP17 has the update already).
Has anybody experienced the issue on early 2009 MBPs? MBP17?

I'm having this problem with my touchpad, which is really hard to explain in words, so I made this quick vid with my iPhone: As you can see, my touchpad "clicks" before I actually click. It makes the sound twice before the computer registers a click. My warranty has expired.

My mid 2010 Macbook Pro makes chirping and clicking noises from the hard drive however it only happens when I have my external monitor hooked up. Any one have any idea why? It is different from the Motion sensor click. I've found all over the net that others are experiancing this issue (not connected to external monitor) however haven't I haven't seen a conclusion.

I starting having problems with my MacBook this morning. After being asleep I started using it again and I wasn't getting a responce from mouse or trackpad clicks. The cursor will still move but I can't select anything. I did a hard restart once and it went back to normal. After it happened again I did another hard restart and it wouldn't boot up again. I did two hard shut downs/restarts and it finally booted up again. Although it's still not responding.

I've turned off all tap to select options but my trackpad still selects and drags when I wiggle my thumb on the bottom of the trackpad, where you generally click. I have a 2010 MacBook Air. Is my trackpad broken, or is there a way to turn this off?

Have been playing around with the MBA for about a day and a half now. A couple of questions which I wanted to see if they are to be expected:
1) When using the trackpad and the trackpad button, I have noticed that the button only registers clicks when pushed in the center. Pushing the button on the far right or far left doesn't register a click. Is this normal?
2) I am using the Apple in-ear headphones occassionaly to listen to a dictation that hasn't been transcribed yet. I noticed that the volume up/volume down buttons and the play/pause button don't work on the MBA, but do work on my MBP. I was wonder if someone had a pair of these headphones or even the Apple iPhone earphones, would you be willing to test it on your computer and see if the volume up/down and play/pause buttons on the headphones work?

I have a friend that has a Blackbook CD 2ghz. Anyways, he told me that after he applied some updates (10.4.11) his macbook trackpad stop registering clicks. At the beginning we thought it was the click button, but after we connected a mouse to his MB, we figured out it may be a software problem because his mac is not even registering left clicks, only right clicks with a mouse. I already tried smc reset and pram reset with no avail. Also we tried to make a new account but same problem happens. I think the only way to fix this problem is to do an archive and install, but he does not have his recuperation cd's.

I bought my macbook pro at the apple store last week (brand new 6 days old, 15" 2.2 ghz i7) and am noticing a clicking sound from the right side of the track pad when i pick it up/ tilt it on my lap. This doesnt occur everytime I pick it up/ move it but often enough throughout the day. I recall the same sound when my powerbook hd crashed many years ago, so I'm a bit concerned.

How can I assign the square root function (button) in Apple's Calculator application to the F13 button?
Similarly, how to assign other buttons within applications to Function keys. (as opposed to assigning menu items to Function keys by using Keyboard application preferences)

When I right click and open the secondary ("right") menu and accentily right click it again the right click acts like a left click. Is this normal?
Example: When I right click on a picture and the cursor is in the menu it will automatically left click what it is over.

In theory, that sounds nice - just point and it clocks itself - but it's not great. Links inadvertently activated, pages opened while I'm still reading the last one. It's a hassle. I went toTrackPad preferences and slowed the tracking speed, but it still does it. I'm using Mavericks. Is there a way to turn this feature off?

When i open the screen as far as i can, the moment i reach the end, i hear a click/creak from the right corner. This happens not always.
I also discovered that the hinge on the right side feel loser than the left side.
How? just push each side, and feel the difference.

My MacBook had the trackpad clicks-not-registering problem that was cleared up by the Trackpad Firmware Update in November. Unfortunately, a variant of that problem seems to have surfaced. When waking from sleep or on boot, roughly half of the trackpad's clicks won't register, forcing me to click two or more times to start an app or read mail. After five or ten minutes, the problem seems to abate. I still "lose" clicks now and then, but not as often. Note that other trackpad functions seem unaffected when this happens.
I've tried resetting the SMC (no effect) and PRAM. Resetting PRAM cleared up the problem but only briefly, and now it's recurring.
I took the MacBook to the Genius Bar and the Genius suggested I use "tap to click" instead, but while that works, I'm a sloppy clicker and found that setting irritating.

I downloaded and installed the multi-touch update that was released yesterday and since then, I have noticed that some of my clicks with my trackpad are not recognized. When I use my Apple Mighty Mouse, it works fine. I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, as well as repairing disk permissions.

My MacBook was working fine until in the last few days it stopped recognising some clicks with the mouse, and sometimes the clicks got stuck so that whenever I tried to move the cursor, it recognised as if I was dragging things when I was no longer clicking. This gradually got worse until it completely stopped working..The mousepad works fine at moving the cursor but I can't click on anything. I've tried to use an external mouse and the same problem occurs.I've tried all the restarting, removing battery, starting on safemode, etc. tricks, and nothing seems to work.

Has anyone experienced this? After doing a thread search I could only find people talking about cracks in the palmrest, which I have thankfully -not- experienced.
Basically the way I'd naturally rest my palms while I type is making for a really annoying experience. Say I'm typing anything (a URL, an IM, etc) and my palms will make a silent "click" happen and before I know it I've accidentally deleted everything I just typed or I've changed windows and made something happen unintended. I'm holding my palms in the air right now as I type.

I have a Unibody MBP (Late '08 - first model) running Snow Leopard. After the installation of SL and the upgrade to 10.6.1 (which I did in the same days), I have problems with my trackpad.
Basically, every once in a while the system ignores hard clicks for some minutes: if I tap it, the click is registered. If I press it down the click is not registered.
I do not think it's hardware-related: nothing happened and the noise/pressure/feeling are the same as before. Is there anyone else with a similar problem?
