MacBook Pro :: Toshiba Canvio 3.0 750gb?
Jun 15, 2012
So I just got a Toshiba Canvio 3.0 750 gb and I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 15 inch running lion. When I plug it in the light apears in the hard drive, but it doesn't show up in finder or disk utility, so I can't use it or reformat it.

So I took the advice of 9to5mac (might have been my first mistake) and ordered the Toshiba Canvio Plus 1tb portable external drive with the goal of removing the 2.5' 12.5mm 5400rpm hdd and transplanting it into my 13" Macbook Pro.

Unfortunately, the case has a (sort of) "unibody" design to it - there are no screws! I don't want to void the warranty by cracking the damn thing open.

Just to give anybody who doesn't know a heads up. The 750gb passport se drive is too tall for a macbook. At least my model (3,1).
Can anybody point me in the direction of another good external drive that is 750 or bigger that will fit?
Also carbon copier reformatted the drive for the mac. How do I change it back and reset it to factory settings?

I have a new Western Digital 3TB drive that I am using as an external drive in a NexStar Hard Drive Dock to connect to my computer. I formatted it in Disk Utility but it only shows up as 746.5 GB and not the full 3TB. I formatted it through Guid Partition but the info says there is 0 partition. I don't actually need a partition, I am trying to use it as backup and copy about 2.5TB of files onto it.I have a Macbook Pro and am running Mac OS 10.5.8?

MacBook Pro 5,1, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I bought a new WD 750GB Scorpio Blue and popped it into a 2009 MBP 15". Everything went fine on the hardware side, but when it came time to install the OS on the new drive everything went downhill. Leopard said it couldn't install because something was wrong with the drive. Snow Leopard just never gets past "30 minutes" remaining. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I'm guessing I have a bad HDD unless I'm somehow missing a step. Both versions of Leopard can see the HDD and can partition it and say that it's OK when I have them check it. I never had much trouble installing Windows, but for some reason installing OSX is eluding me. Any thoughts besides just sending the drive back? I've already disconnected and reconnected it without any improvement.

I have a White MacBook version 3,1 made in 2008 w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller. Unfortunately this controller is only 1.5gb/sec. I picked up a WD7500BPVT, WD Scorpio Blue 750gb, with a spec of 3gb/sec. Western Digital tech support assured me it would step down to 1.5gb/sec, no jumpers needed (as it isn't configurable by a hardware jumper). So I install it in my MacBook, boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc but it doesn't see my fancy, schmancy 750gb drive. Is the drive not seen because of a compatibility issue w/ the SATA controller? If so, what is the largest capacity 9.5mm drive someone has installed in a MacBook w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller?

The press release info implies that the 750GB version uses 333GB/platter technology, but they don't come right out and say it. They seem to be referring mainly to the 1TB version.
Assuming they are using the larger platters, do they simply block off the excess capacity? Does this mean the 750GB might actually be faster on average, assuming they disable the slowest blocks?I really want to put one of these in my 17" MBPRo, but I'd hate to find out later that the 750GB version is actually using "old tech" 250Gb platters.

I installed a Momentus XT 750 (ST750LX003-1AC154 firmware SM12) into my MacBook Pro (late 2009). I then did a full clean install of OSX 10.7 and updated to 10.7.3. Lately I have been getting odd hangs of applications and eventually the OS, finally I have to hard-power it down and reboot.Â
No SMART errors reported, PRAM and SMC have been reset. I am on the latest firmware and EFI for this particular MacBook Pro.  I do not think that this drive is spinning down if idle.Â
As far as I know there is not a firmware update for the XT 750 drive and I am on SM12. Â
What else can I try to get this machine stable? This is a 750GB hybrid SSD drive and I read about lots of issues with SSD and hybrid-SSD drives in previous generation MacBook Pros, particularly with Lion. Â

I am using a rocketfish adapter to connect MacBook Pro to a Toshiba TV with HDMI. I can see all icons and apps on the Mac but only the typical Mac background screen on the TV (you know the stars and northern lights). No apps are showing on the TV. So, there is a connection because I can see the trademark Apple background on the screen, but none of the apps are showing while I work away on the Mac. I did the same thing with my Sony TV tv and I was able to see everything on the Sony screen. Is there a compatability problem with the Toshiba or is there something I need to do to reconfigure the Mac ?

I have a moshi Mini DP to HDMI adapter, HDMI cable (Monster Digital Audio and Video) and a Toshiba 26SL400U LED TV. According to what I have read about my MBP it supports audio out through the MiniDP (under the System Profiler Audio(built in) it shows HDMI / Display Port Output) Following the instructions for the Moshi adapter (sold at the Apple Store) I hook everything up MBP>Adapter>HDMI Cable>TV. Turn the TV on and I should be able to select the HDMI option for audio in System preferences and I should be able to select the display as well.

Obviously, the Momentus XT will be faster because of its Hybrid structure with the 4gb SSD cache, but how much faster in reality compared to the 1TB drive. I'm coming from the stock 250GB HDD in the 13in MBP (Mid 2009) and am looking to upgrade. Just don't know which to get as I would like speed and more space.

I went to genius bar yesterday because some problems with the privies hard disk drive. They gave me the toshiba as a replacement. I wasn't required to sign any paper after that. Before when I got a replacement iphone or macbook charger, they both asked me to sign a paper. I don't know why this time is different. Also I heard that Toshiba hard drive is worse than Samsung's.By the way, I didn't erase my documents in previous hard drive, will anyone be able use or read them? Well, I saved many account passwords in that hard drive.

I and several people are reporting that the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB does not spinning down at idle under MacOS Lion. Do any of you have this drive and have similar problems? This is a notebook hard drive and I have it in my MacBook Pro (late 2009), but others report this in other models, like the late 2011 and mid 2010 MacBook Pros. The drive will only spin down when I force the laptop to sleep by choosing Sleep under the Apple menu or closing the lid. However it does not spin down under normal use, nor does it seem to let the laptop go to sleep.Â

Toshiba's Portege R500 has been doing battle with the MacBook Air since the start of 2008. But now they've got a new slimline machine to square up to Apple's razor sharp beast and Voodoo's slinky Envy. It's called the Portege R600 and they're saying it's "the world's thinnest and lightest laptop."Despite getting official approval over in Canada, Tosh hasn't given up much regarding specs, just saying that it'll weigh in at 2.1 pounds, have a battery life up to nine hours and pack a Core 2 Duo processor under the hood.

I just got my new MBP and it has a Toshiba MK5055GSXF 500gb inside. My old one has a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb. I know the Scorpio Blue is supposed to be fast for a 5400rpm. Does anyone have an opinion whether it would be worth it to switch them? Is the WD superior?

I want to connect my MBP to my TV to be able to watch BBC iplayer downloads and wondered what cables i will need for picture and audio.
The tv is a Toshiba WLT66 32" with a Mini D-Sub 15 pin connector and my MBP has the mini display port on it.
Do i need the Mini DVI to VGA for vision? I need one about a metre long. The one's i've seen on Apple Store uk are all short (about 15cm)Not sure what audio cable i need though. My TV has HDMI port plus the usual L/R phono type sockets on it and the MBP just has the usual headphone socket.
